I'm curious. Why on earth would and normal working class American vote for the republicans this year (God knows most of you didn't last time round)

Some people tend to focus on issues of morality or "freedom". If some working class person is really hard core against abortion, or is really hard core pro-gun, they may look past socio-economic issues and vote republican.
Of course, then you also have the working class people who buy into the whole ideal of the American Dream... in particular, the whole free market aspect of it. Again, these people may vote republican.
Then lets not forget the whole "war on terror" issue. Republicans are traditionally seen as strong in issues of national defence. There are going to be people who look past every single other issue and, perhaps despite hating everything that republicans stand for, will hold their noses and vote republican because their overriding ultimate concern is defence... and that is seen as a republican's bailiwick.
Just some ideas...

Most of us voted for Gore last time, and someone in FL, screwed up the ballots.
