I've seen a lot of discussion in the IC threads about n00bs; particularly the ones that will claim to have billion man armies two days after their country was founded.

The question that appears as the subject line here is kind of a question to get a sense for what makes some people who have had countries for several weeks "n00bs" and what would make a country's founder NOT a n00b?

I'm pretty new to NationStates, but I'm not new to role playing, and I try to use some common sense with my role plays (for instance, not trying to get superpowers to attack me). When do I stop being a n00b?

n00b = Godmodder, spammer, moron, idiot, etc.

If you have acted sensibly online, you have never been a n00b. You are a newbie (which isn't offensive, well to me it isn't) until you post your first 100 posts, and reach 100 million people. Thats the standard figure, I believe.

This part I don't agree with, your first 100 posts. I am well over 100 million in population, and act very sensible online, but according to this statement and the fact i have slow internet I'm still a newb.

My definition of a nation that is not a newb would be something more like; a nation that has grown in size and maturity, a nation large enough and smart enough to take care of itself.

oh yes, you're right; in another roleplay there entered too many noobs and I couldn't do anything...finally, I left, killing myself in that game, I don't want them to upset me anymore

If you have to ask whether or not you're a newb, I'd still consider you a newb. I think you stop being a newb when you stop being a newb. It's not something someone else has to point out to you. You'll eventually reach a point where you'll realize you're not a newb anymore. There isn't really a set boundary between newbism and non-newbism.

Some posters are never newbs, they hit the ground running. Savvy, confident, it's as if they'd always been there.
Hatcham Woods and Berkylvania come to mind.

That doesn't stop them being newbie's though. It does stop them being n00bs. There is a huge difference that people seem to not get. somebody could have a pop of 6bn, and still be a n00b. They are very unlikely to be a newbie, however, as they probably made quite a few posts.
A newbie is exactly as the name says. New. That's all. Not a god-modder, not a cheat, not irritating. Irritating god-modders are what n00bs are.

Well, whatever the statistics say, I claim it's a matter of style.
Not just non-n00bdom, but actual sophistication.
If you can't tell the difference between the actions of a newcomer and an old-timer, you maybe shouldn't classify them as a newcomer (for other than statistical purposes)

But that's kind of all it really is. Plus, if they want to RP militarily, they have no hope, as most nations would be far larger than them, with a standing army likely able to crush them.
Also, a newbie is a non-n00b in the same way every other non-n00b is.
n00bness transcends the age barrier.

According to my intense calculations anyone who hasnt been registered for 6 months or doesnt have a country with over 500 million people is a newb. Any old spammer can get 100 posts, it has absolutely no relevance at all.

Only newbies think the only place to play NationStates is on the official forums.

100 posts is very low. Even if you don't usually play ns on the officials, you should still have 100+ posts. Anyway. How could I be a newb? I know how it works, have been here for 3 months, have easily over 400 posts, and have more than 300 million, just short of 400. You aren't usually a newbie for very long.
Also, if they justy spam, they are probably n00bs.

Severance, yes, IRC is much, much better for playing roleplays. :)

Point taken. I still considered myself a newb because I'm new to NS. If this were about being a newb to role playing games in general, I'd say I'm NOT a newb.

I was wondering because my "noob mistake" wasn't the egregious saying I have a million man army when my nation is three days old; it was severing diplomatic relations with a country before I read its explanation (which turned out to be a damn good reason for mobilizing its navy). There was no way in Hell I was going to try to pick a fight with a country owning a 600 ship navy when I only had eight ships. That's why I'd try diplomatic avenues first.

Hmmm someone said earlier coming out of n00bship and coming into your manhood(or womanhood heh - for all you IRC people, if Nathi was here she'd kill me) probably does happen when you are reliable and can look after yourself, without need of calling for the international community "PLLZZZ LOK HEERAR!!!! HEALP MEAH!" , and can handle the situations that you, just you, got into on your own without spreading the blame and ignoring the consequences. NS RP takes alot of time, and some forms of n00bishness is just not going on it for days - skipping pages and pages of a war.

I don't rp so I can't be considered a noob there. I've spent the better part of a year here, so again I'm not a noob. I guess the only difference between me the noob *And I was the noob from hell when I first started here. new to the internet itself as well* and me now Is just a little experience.

No, post count really doesn't matter, it really doesn't.
I have almost 1000 posts on the forums of Europe, and I had a few hundred on those of The New Europe (before they crashed).

I don't consider myself to be a newbie, but I'm not gonna say: "I'm not a newbie because I'm that old or because I have that particular number of posts."

However, it's still nice to point out that you've been playing NS for over a year :P
