He strikes me as a very good man. What do you think of him?

Come on people haven't you heard of John McCain?

He has his high points, and his low points.

If he were president, and there was a democratic Congress, then I imagine the government would be fairly ballanced.

"Why is Chelsea Clinton so ugly?
Because her father is Janet Reno." - Sen. John McCain

I like the man. Wouldn't vote for him unless he ran against someone farther right (he's still a bit too conservative for my tastes), but he sticks to his guns and is an open-minded person.

But his son's a bit obnoxious...

He'd be acceptable in '08, but his greatest 'achievement' has proven to be a flop. That is, the McCain/Feingold campaign finance bill, which is entirely worthless, as we have seen. Plus, Bush tore him apart Royal in the last primary, and Bush isn't exactly the consummate politician.. so he'd probably be easy prey for a non-coma-inducing Democrat, if there are any.

If there are so many liberals and independents who like a Republican, he must be Evil.

I'd probably have voted for him in 2000, but he's too conservative on some social issues for my tastes currently. But he's an honorable man and the kind of Republican I respect, because he seems to be willing to discuss issues on which you disagree rather than simply being an ideologue a la Tom DeLay and George W. Bush.

I love McCain, he seems VERY honest, something rare in American politics today.

I disagree with McCain on a lot of issues, but I have respect for him. He's generally honest and willing to think independently instead of just blindly following the Bush administration. I liked him back in 2000, and I think that a McCain presidency would have been far better for the country than a Bush presidency.

At least today on Meet the Press he put to rest the possibility of running as VP with either Bush or Kerry--thank God. Now the Democrats can concentrate on winning with one of our own.

Yeah, the fact that some Democrats entertained that idea seriously was silly. But it did reflect poorly on Bush to have McCain talking about defection, so they did get something out of it.

It was very silly and I was vehemently opposed to it, my respect for the man notwithstanding. Think about it--you pick a VP from outside your own party, which basically means you're confessing that you don't have anyone as good inside your own party, which is crap. Plus, you're picking someone conservative--and McCain is decidedly conservative--when you've had problems motivating your progressive base (who already thinks your candidate is too conservative). And to top it off, you're going to make this guy the deciding vote in case of a tie in the Senate, a Senate that will likely be closely divided for the foreseeable future. I just don't see enough upside to warrarnt it.

McCain seems alright. A little too conservative for my tastes though. Although with him not being as conservative as Bush, that's a real plus. But it'd just be horrible for him to be picked as Kerry's running mate, basically with all the reasons said by Incertonia and others.

McCain is one of the few Republicans who have demonstrated integrity and also remained independent of the administration.

That is why you may notice Fox News sending zingers his way now and then.
