Depends on the relationship. Some are based on eternal argument.

Politics shouldn't be a factor in a relationship....lol please, explain why
11-04-2004, 08:15
Variety is the spice of life. If your beloved disagrees with you, as long as he or she disagrees in a respectful manner and can back his or her stuff up, then it's better than any relationship where both constantly agree with each other.

I'm the sort of person who makes out and speaks philosophically at the same time. Of course it's important.

Damn, we got a buncha Bills and Hillaries out there, from the poll results. Real "Power" couples. :) Politics is a non-issue to me, most broads are democrats anyway, due to the horomones and such.. you learn to deal with it, it's not difficult. My first (serious) gf was off-the-chart liberal.. I figured it out eventually, didn't care before and didn't care afterward.

Well politics jsut isn't really all that important when it comes to people. Politics really has nothing to do with people, just money pushin'.

If you're asking if I find how a person looks more important than how a person thinks, then the answer is easy--a person's mind is far more important to any relationship than his or her physical appearance. That doesn't mean that my girlfriend has to share all my political opinions or vice versa--there are some ways in which my g/f is more liberal than I am and the opposite is true as well. But we're both smart enough to be able to converse intelligently on those issues we either agree or disagree on, and that's what makes a relationship work--the ability to communicate.

The fact that she's hot is just bonus.

Hmm...My wife and I dont really discuss politics very often... And even when we do, it's more of a slight outburst on my end because I heard some dumb hick on the radio making incorrect statements...

I think politics are as important to a relationship as you make them...

Darn right it's important. If I'm going to be life-partners with someone, I have to admire/respect her. If her politics are all wrong (like if's she's some kinda bible-thumping conservative anti-choice pro-war NUT JOB), then how could I admire her or be with her? Politics and morals are inseparable.

Also, if my partner has no interest or knowledge of politics or public issues at all, it would mean she's self-absorbed and not too bright. I can't be with someone like that either.
Santin

It's definitely important to some people, less important to others. As for myself, I think it's important to have some variety of sparring partner -- a critical sign of intellectual maturity is that you test your mind by searching out diverse ideas.

you people are too concerned with politics.

there are more important things, like enjoying life, having fun, friends, family, work, children, and school.

to the people I date, those are the most important things.

fuck, i dated a girl that voted for nader, and it was still a great relationship. politics is a footnote to the finer things to enjoy in life.

Politics are not important in a relationship. It only becomes important if one of the people makes it important. I'm pretty sure you can talk about something else. in general i prefer mates who don't agree with me on much of politics...my current squeeze is a full-on socialist, and we have had some doozie rows over politics. it's half the fun, to be honest.

there are, however, some areas where i wouldn't be okay with disagreement. gay rights, for example, since i am bisexual. abortion rights, since i am a woman who never wishes to have children, and since my sexual partner and i need to see eye to eye on that subject. and for a relationship to have a long-term future i would need the partner to share many of my views on religion (though not all) simply because i don't think somebody with strong religious commitments would be able to build a life with me.

True.
But the original question was if politics mattered.

To a point politics doesn't matter but I don't think I could date or even get along with white supremacist or any other racist. Moderate politics wouldn't seem to be a big problem. However, anything that is taken to the extreme becomes repellant to me.

I could not be with a conservative woman. period. not ever, because I'm so political, I could not stand being in arguments all the time.

Yes, to a point. I agree.

But I also think that this is something not many people have to think about because chances are that if someone is totally opposite of you when it comes to politics, they don't have much in common at all.

For example: Someones massive interest in guns would probably not attract certain types of people, not because of politics, but simply because they don't have an interest or hate guns.
Chances are their ideas about politics are different too.

I don't think that agreeing on politics is critical to a relationship. I mean cripes look at Gov. Schwarzenegger (my god does that look wrong to type) and Maria. A republican and a freakin' Kennedy

in general i prefer mates who don't agree with me on much of politics...my current squeeze is a full-on socialist, and we have had some doozie rows over politics. it's half the fun, to be honest.

there are, however, some areas where i wouldn't be okay with disagreement. gay rights, for example, since i am bisexual. abortion rights, since i am a woman who never wishes to have children, and since my sexual partner and i need to see eye to eye on that subject. and for a relationship to have a long-term future i would need the partner to share many of my views on religion (though not all) simply because i don't think somebody with strong religious commitments would be able to build a life with me.

Now see I agree with you on that. I love those sort of arguments, and there is no-one you can argue more heatedly with than the one you're going to have a lot of fun making up with afterwards.

Politics. . .I'd hope to find someone who shares my views. After a shared belief in Christianity, politics are the most important thing. I'd have to have someone who at least knows the difference between the left and the right. . .
