Would it sell as much as the Passion?

If Mel Gibson had put as much effort and money into a movie about Christ's LIFE, and his ministry and miracles and good works, would it sell as much as the Passion?

Personally, I think that if he did a movie on the other 90% of the new testament, it might get a better response from the audience.

EDIT: Poll fixed, here to stay now :)

I'm not sure - it would be hugely popular within the Christian churches but the Passion has stirred up so much controversy that many people are going to see it simply because it's been in the media so much
if a film were made that portrayed Jesus's whole life would the majority of people simply ignore it - who know's maybe it would be an effective evangelistic tool but unfortunately I suspect that in today's society people are more interested in blood and guts and controversy

Maybe Mel Gibson intended that people already know about the life and ministry of Jesus before going to see the movie. Or maybe that once having watched the movie, people would want to go and read the rest of the story.

I spent the last week or two handing out free copies of videos like that for Easter.

But a name like Mel Gibson... that would sell.

I mean, the passion did... and everyone knows that movie's been done about 508713250978 times.

yeah it's a shame really that it takes a big name behind something before people are interested

For an independant film to be successful, it either has to be a big name, or win Sundance.

I think that a movie about The Passion would sell more. Personally I have been going to Catholic school all of my life, and I am tired of hearing the same stories over and over. Not saying that I dont love them or that I dont believe in or love Jesus, its just I would not pay the money to go into a movie theatre and see what I have learned in school all my life in one big moving picture. Since I personally dont go to the movies that often, there would be no way that id go for it. On the other hand, I would go to see a movie about the Passion. It is covered in school of course but not with as much depth and to the point that I can appreciate the act. Also the controversy over it does peak my interest in the movie more. All throughout Jesus's life he sparked controversy where ever he went, and once again, trouble starts.
and thats all I can think of saying

no, only reason it was succesful was becuase people wanted to see how controversial it was for them selves. In order for a movie like this to sell big it has to have a controversy about it to get people interested.

Neither movie. Religion sucks and should not be sold in movies, shows, etc.

I think that a movie with blood and gore would sell more than a movie about peace because thats what attracts people.

"Christ's Life" has been done before. It was the anti-semetic hype that caused the interest in the Passion.

The entire life of Christ could be portrayed in the cinema if it were a trilogy or more of movies. But I think so many Jesus films have flopped primarily because the passion was taken out of the Passion. Gibson's film has done so well partly because most people already have heard part of the Gospels, have had the message preached to them, and even if they have not heard, they would be surrounded by people at the theater and know multiple people who could explain things to them. ~ Michael.

absolutely, and especially when a movie is about to banned and there's a limited time to see it in...people just storm the theatres to see it. Controversy, blood, violence --- any or all of those, especially the first one sends people to the cinema. The parables wouldn't of made it successful, it's the shock factor that draws people in.

Let me see... *searching his ancient memory* I seem to remember a movie from the 70's called "Jesus Christ Superstar" that was a number one best seller. The controversy of the time was putting Rock and Roll music together with the telling of Christ life and times.

I like Godspell, and if you ever have the chance to watch Campus Crusade for Christ's JESUS Film in another language (with English subtitles), it is a hoot! The dubbing is done so well. I have watched it in Hindi and Japanese. It is so funny watching white men speaking in Japanese, but with non-Asian facial expressions. You can watch or listen to The JESUS Film in up to sixty languages online:

There is no charge to watch. Broadband streaming video is also available. ~ Michael.
