Actors Whip Easter Bunny at Church Show

GLASSPORT, Pa. April 8 - A church trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children.

People who attended Saturday's performance at Glassport's memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, "There is no Easter bunny,'' and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.

Melissa Salzmann, who brought her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children. "He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped,'' Salzmann said.

Patty Bickerton, the youth minister at Glassport Assembly of God, said the performance wasn't meant to be offensive. Bickerton portrayed the Easter rabbit and said she tried to act with a tone of irreverence.

"The program was for all ages, not just the kids. We wanted to convey that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ,'' Bickerton said.

Performers broke eggs meant for an Easter egg hunt and also portrayed a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman, said Jennifer Norelli-Burke, another parent who saw the show in Glassport, a community about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"It was very disturbing,'' Norelli-Burke said. "I could not believe what I saw. It wasn't anything I was expecting.''

Whadaya mean there's no Easter Bunny?

Where do the eggs come from then eh? S'pose they 'evolved" from chocolate chickens eh?

My sacred books all say that the easter bunny created the eggs in the three days of the easter break, so there.

I say flog his furry little arse. That's the trouble with modern religion, not enough scourging & penitence.

I read about this and could only say, damn. What kind of mind does it take to think that this is a good idea in a serious context? In a humorous one, I can see, but in church? Come on.

Yes... because abusing animals is a key component of Christian worship.

It's from that little-known section of the speech from the Temple Mount: "Blessed are the Bondage-Bunnies, for they shall inherit Playboy Mansion"

I understand what they were trying to do. But you think one of them would have had the brains to realize that flogging a character beloved of the kids might just cause some distress.

Perhaps for the Christmas show they'll have a reindeer hunt....

My mom was trying to decide wether to bring my little sisters are not(3 and7 years old) after she saw it. we ended up going after reading the bible for an hour and they didn't cry.... I did though.

About the rabbit funny yet sad to a degree that the chruch is resorting to violence and the torment of bunnies. But honestly I would pay to see the Easter bunny get knocked out. Not in church though. Funny I just saw a rabbit with a broken leg in my yard yesterday.

Perhaps we should give Jesus myxomatosis and calicivirus next Christmas nativity scene.

That way, those Jesuses that survive to crucifixion have the immunity to calicivirus and myxomatosis, thus demonstrating the power of natural selection.
