as I have been studying history and political science I have noticed certian things than can be seen as the traits of a good leader.

1. As long as the change is positive, he welcomes change.
2. He may not go back to his home, but he never forgets where he is from.
3. He is comfortable being alone, but prefers to be with others.
4. He welcomes adverse situations, because they seperate the leaders from the followers as well as the strong from the weak.
5. He knows when to take the blame in situations when it is not his fault, and knows when to let the person responsible take the fall.
6. The good leader will always put the team/army/company ahead of himself, he sees the team/army/company being himself, and not vice versa.
7. The leader will always take responsibility for his poor actions, even when it is his staffs fault, and always give credit where credit is due when great decisions are made by himself or his staff.
8. The leader is complicated. He is always more than what meets the eye.
9. The leader is diverse. he can relate to most any situation put in front of him.
10. The leader (if he is a male) will always be a gentleman. He will always get the door, never cuss, and will always yeild his posistion to any woman in everyday situations. In leadership situations, he will never treat a woman as a woman, but see her as an individual, and will not be afraid to speak his mind if he feels so.
11. The leader is decisive, and is not afraid to make the wrong decision, because he is confidant his decision is the right decision.

I meant to put a disclaimer saying that women are as good as men at bering leaders, because typing "he" is easier than typing "he or she."

I put GWB in the catagory of a good leader, but alot of the prinicples I was refeering to were about Stalin, JFK, FDR, Lincoln, Washington, Hitler, Napeolon, Robert E. Lee, Nathan Bedford Forrest, Karl Marx, Ceasar, and others people you are likely not aware of.

Most of the dictators are also good leaders. What is the "good" in a leader anyway? It is a pity that peple promote leaders all the time instead of keeping their destiny in their own hands.

The ability to understand people,

The ability to manage and motivate people,

The ability to make decisions and take control.

Those are a couple of things I've picked up, though they are more relevant to business rather than leading a country.

Sounds like the kind of pussy that would piss off many a' independant woman. :(

Why not speak your mind ALL THE TIME, as oppossed to the 'in leadership situations et cetera'?

Btw A good leader inspires by example. :)

you know I think the most important trait of a good leader is one who does not campaign to become a leader.

Exactally!!!

A good leader finds himself in leadership situations, and does not try to put himself in leadership situations.

Yeah, yeah.
You've just eliminated Winston Churchill for one. Admit he had many major errors, but was the right leader at the right time.

Try running your list over your best selections of leaders, see how you go.

BTW, hate to say it, but apart from the (present/past) Irish president (Mary ? Robinson?) cannot think of many good women leaders.

Thatcher, Golda Meir, Indira Ghandi, and Bhutto would not qualify for mine.

The opposition figure from Burma (whose name eludes me) has seemed good.

Interested in feedback from others.

well well!, when will you become a leader?

More than likely in the next two decades if I play my cards right. I know I have what it takes (I act much more sinsibly than in NS - it is a game after all)

I've read countless books on the subject of leadership, my own rather biased conclusion is that the ancient Chinese military treatsies had the best descriptions for what it takes to be a leader. Sun-Tzu, Wu-Tzu and Wei Liao-Tzu being some of the more authoritative on the subject.

However I must put forth that there are different KINDS of leaders, and a leader in one situation may be drastically out of place in another. The kind of inscruitable, mysterious leader that would do well in a strategy meeting would have a devil of a time leading a troop of youngsters on a field trip. The leader of a street gang has different qualities than a leader of an entire army, but might share qualities with the leader of a Marching Band, or the leader of a Platoon.

Sometimes one must lead from the front or no one will follow you, other times the desicions made in the commander's tent win victories miles away.
