My South is full of honest, hard-working people.
My South is colorblind. In my South, we don’t put a premium on pigment. No one cares whether you are black, white, red or green with orange polka dots.
My South is the birthplace of blues and jazz, and rock-and-roll. It has banjo pickers and fiddle players, but it is also has B.B. King, Muddy Waters, the Allman Brothers, Emmylou Harris and Elvis.
My South is hot.
My South smells of newly mown grass.
My South was the South of The Partridge Family, Hawaii 5-0 and kick the can.
My South was creek swimming, cane-pole fishing and bird hunting.
In my South, football is king, and the Southeastern Conference is the kingdom.
My South is home to the most beautiful women on the planet.
In my South, soul food and country cooking are the same thing.
My South is full of fig preserves, cornbread, butter beans, fried chicken, grits and catfish.
In my South we eat foie grass, caviar and truffles.
In my South, our transistor radios introduced us to the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and everything.
In my South the tea is iced, and almost as sweet as the women.
My South has air-conditioning.
My South is camellias, azaleas, wisteria and hydrangeas.
My South is humid.
In my South, the only person that has to sit on the back of the bus is the last person that got on the bus.
In my South, people still say “yes, ma’am”, “no, ma’am”, “please” and “thank you”
In my South, we all wear shoes… most of the time.

My South has churches everywhere, preachers and evangelists, Bible studies and prayer meetings, missionaries sent to faraway lands, potluck meals and picnics. In my South, marriage is between one man and one woman, and no one divorces, and families have four or more children. In my South, grandparents, aunts, and uncles live nearby. People grow much of their own food. There are only four television stations, and Saturday morning cartoons reign. Kids play outside most days, and the television is off most nights. People get together and chat on porches and backyards. My South has Bojangles, Church's, and Popeye's Fried Chicken; but you don't have to go far to find pan-fried chicken if you want it. My South has the American flag proudly displayed, military parades, and if a young lad has a choice between a high-paying career on Wall Street right out of college or a two-year stint in the military, there's no debate about which he will choose. In my South, people protect forests so they can shoot deer, rivers so they can catch fish. So forth and so on. ~ Michael.

By the way, in my South, all races are accepted. Confederate history is not venerated as it is now. In my South, taxes are low, and charity is high. Christians respect religious freedom in my South, and they preach to the Jew, the Muslim, and the Buddhist, but they don't burn down synagogues, mosques, or temples. In my South, Communism is hated, and capitalism is taught cautiously, knowing that capitalism unrestrained leads to slavery of the body, mind, and soul. In my South, every man, woman, and child owns a rifle and a pistol, and knows how to use them. ~ Michael.

Yes, but that's not what you said, is it? Or, perhaps it is. Is every man, woman and, most importantly, child in "your South" either a member of the Boy Scouts or the ROTC?

By the way, I was an Eagle Scout. I don't own either a pistol or a rifle. Should I be concerned?

What would your South look like? Obviously, the South still has plenty of racism, crime, divorce, and incivility. But what do you want? Is the benchmark of your perfect existence simply the absence of hate and violence? Because it would seem you could have that without marriage or children or religious organizations or God, right? What do you want? I often want to ask this question because people criticize what America is and does, but if you had a perfect world, what would it look like? Would it just be an absence of war and hunger? Is that all it would be? ~ Michael.

"Thus saith the LORD; I am returned unto Zion, and will dwell in the midst of Jerusalem: and Jerusalem shall be called a city of truth; and the mountain of the LORD of hosts the holy mountain. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; There shall yet old men and old women dwell in the streets of Jerusalem, and every man with his staff in his hand for very age. And the streets of the city shall be full of boys and girls playing in the streets thereof" (Zechariah 8:3-5).

"But in the last days it shall come to pass, that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it. For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the LORD our God for ever and ever. In that day, saith the LORD, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; and I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the LORD shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever. And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem" ( Micah 4:1-8 ).

"And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" (Revelation 21:1-4). ~ Michael.

But you see, that's just the thing. I wasn't the one painting an ideal picture of the South, inferring strengths while ignoring weaknesses. I'm fully willing to admit that nothing in the world is perfect. Everything could use improvement. There are very nice things about the South. People are polite, in general. Mind you, it can sometimes be a uniquely Southern type of politeness where they're nice to your face and speak scandalously about you behind you back.

Every place has both good and bad about it. To give an accurate portrayal, the two must go hand in hand. One can and should strive for ideals, but one cannot idealize existance.

And yes, I think a "perfect world" would lack hatred and violence. I'm not sure why you go on to infer that means there's no place for marriage, children or God. I do think a society where a mentally retarded black man can be drug behind the pick up truck of some good ole boys until his head explodes like an over ripe melon simply because he was black deserves some critical examination.

Because two wrongs make a right? Or an eye for an eye? I would have to say, in my perfect society (north, south, east, west), there would be no death penalty. Murder is wrong, state-sanctioned or otherwise. Besides, killing the offender doesn't fix the problem that gave rise to them in the first place.

He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the funeral, when the preacher said, "Dust to dust," some people laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told the others, "I'll be waiting for you in heaven--with a gun."

Why, exactly, do you feel the need to emphasize "Your South?"

Personally, the South is nice, but I prefer "My North."
In My North, we have the majesty and grace as snow gently falls, crucial to the cycle of nature.
In My North, we are proud of our colonial history and our connection to the founding fathers, though we don't disparage the history of the South.
In My North, we maintain a close-knit sense of community.
My North has fewer flooding problems, and lower humidity.
