I just don't understand women in rap videos. Why would they want to be treated like that? Why are they attracted to men who dress like slobs and act like idiots? ~ Michael.

Same factors effect those women as effect everyone. You see a horrible accident and you can't take your eyes off of it (even if you can be of no help). These women just mistake the Rapper effect for admiration. Poor things need someone to pull them away from the crash-site.

For all any of us know, they might hate the people they're working for, but they can shake it and get money and exposure and maybe translate that into more and more work. There may be some attraction there in some cases, but I'd be willing to bet that most of them are in the videos because it's a job.

Well rock is very broad but that kind of stuff is generally metal.....Michael Bolton has longer hair than any of the Sum 41 guys....is that metal?

the thing is.......metal most people hear (Korn, Slipknot, System of a Down...) is garbage. They tune their guitars down and bang on em. The vocalist cant sing, so he just yells.

On the other hand, a band like Opeth (my favorite band), is amazing. They use some amazing chords (i cant figure em out). The lyrics are deep. The vocalist can sing AND do a death metal voice (the only death metal voice I can stand). My favorite part is all of thier songs are near or over 10 minutes, and not one gets boring.

not a fan. too much screaming, and the music gets old. They are just trying too hard to play loud.

My personal take (you didn't ask me but answering, though I haven't heard Extol :P ). Yes they are pretty much screaming, though Dimmu Borgir has acquired Vortex (black metal bands love to have stupid names for their members) that has shifted slightly. Anyway the point is, the vocals are to complement the music to produce a raw, angry sounding music. There are many bands that fall under the metal banner that have excellent singers that don't scream.
For example:
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest
Queensryche
Fates Warning
Vanishing Point
Dream Theater
H.I.M.
(and others)

siple, women's attraction to men is broken down like this: money/power:40% obviously, the rappers have power and money
attraction 50%: these men are generally good looking. also, they have a danger factor, and generally play hard to get, all add to their attractiveness factor

the other 10% is made up of things they say they care about but dont like thoughtfullness, intelligence, goodlooks etc. the 10% grows in importance as relationships mature, which is why rappers dont have lasting relationships.

but really, the reason rappers get good looking girls in their videos and treat them so badly is because in general the way to get laid is by being attractive, rich, novel and aloof.

I do kind of like Iron Maiden and this Opeth sounds alright from what I've heard and I've heard very little.....also like Lacuna Coil not sure if you consider that metal.

Very good, I was going to mention that, but you did it for me.

There's not much to miss about hiphop. It's a very simple and pure form of music. It's a single voice, driving words into a rhythmn and beat that carries a song on its shoulders. The difference between hiphop and most other styles of music is that the vocals in other styles suppliment the music, in rap, the music suppliments the vocals. A rapper has the responsibility to provide character and life to the song, because the whole song is centered around his voice. If you look at Warren G, Tupac and other great rappers, you'll see that it's not the bass that provides the beat, but the bass that follows the beat provided by the rappers themselves. The music also has a culture and a history behind it that, lately, requires a persona of sex, drugs and ballin', but it wasn't always like that. My advice, look back and listen to the old hiphop artists of yore and you'll get a better feel for what a lot of people admire about it. Not money, cars and fame, but just a person, his microphone and a lot of words to say.

However, today, hiphop has become rap, a mainstream, commercialized form of the purity it once was. To quote a recent movie "The difference between rap and hiphop is the difference between saying you love someone and being in love with someone. Rap is just a word."
However, this can be appriciated for a certian value too. It's simply music, enjoy the beats, listen to the rappers, but don't try to find much message in the rap of today. Minus a few songs, it's mostly hate and sex... hey look, that summarizes most rock/metal music too! Too many metalheads have developed this ego about how their music has so much more message than everyone elses and how they are inherantly superior because they can snap their heads up and down harder to whip their hair around so the look like a blender on crack. Personally, I think rock is music. It's no better than any other type of music. It's no worse either. Personal preference, rap, hiphop, r&b, techno, but that's just me. Country, rock, metal, etc. it's all music. Just listen and enjoy, folks.

Opeth is about as exciting as sticking drawingpins into your scrotum. So the guy can sing and scream. Big deal. It is not hard to do at all. If you want real metal, try a bit of Cryptopsy, Kataklysm, Deeds Of Flesh, Dying Fetus, Nile, Cephalic Carnage, or Incantation.

Not to pick nits here, but Opeth isn't "numetal". "Numetal" is usually a derisive word used to refer to recent metal bands that combine elements of rap and hip hop with metal, bands such as Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park. Opeth, as a metal band, would be referred to as "death metal".

I don't think I know The Boredoms.

The Boredoms are a Japanese avant garde/grind/noise band. The sound is kind of hard to pin down, but they've worked with Mike Patton, Ween, and John Zorn. Their songs are anything from a few seconds to 12-13 minutes long, and the lyrics are nigh on impossible to understand. I'm not sure if they're Japanese or just nonsense. It makes for a compelling, and sometimes slightly disturbing listen.

I think I'm getting a bit confuzzled between Opeth and Otep. Although, Opeth are just more rehasshing of old metal. IMO, apart from a few bands, metal hasn't progressd much in 20 years. Same-old shouty-shouty death metal or Crap-rap overlaid on even worse detuned guitar.
