Best Video Game Ever?

I was just working on my work-in-progress fan site for Max Payne 2 and wondered what other people's fav game is?
In case you hadn't already guessed, mine's Max Payne 2, but the likes of Halo an the Zelda games come close behind.

Why does it need to be? :?

Well, quite obviously it doesn't need to be, but the fact that it remains well remembered 20 years later, and still plays amazingly well for a programme that could fit into 28k (some versions) should count for something.

Hardly the same thing as Elite, are they though? Just distractions, not immersive experiences. I suppose that some version of computer chess, like the one that runs in 1K of memory on the ZX80 would be the winner if we took into account limited hardware considerations.

For NES, Marble Madness
SNES: Either Mario Kart or FF2
Genesis: Warsong or Shadowrun
PS1: FF7
PS2: Evil Dead: Fist Full of Boomstick
XBox: Morrowind
PC: Deus Ex (the first one)

But Frogger still beats them all.

My personal favorite is Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura by Sierra and Troika Games (who also helped make Fallout). I don't think that it's a very well known game, but everyone I've known to have played it loves it. It's a good game that does well to blend magic with technology without making either one too powerful. Its graphics were a bit outdated for its time, but the music is just plainly great.

You can learn more about it here:

http://arcanum.sierra.com/game/game-overview.html

And you can download the music here:

http://arcanum.sierra.com/media/media-soundtrack.html

Other games that I love are: Final Fantasy Tactics, Morrowind, Breath of Fire 3, Dynasty Warriors 4, Armored Core 3, Metroid Prime, Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Planescape: Torment, and Wild Arms.

Civ 3 wasn't all it could have been, but I'd have to say that Call to Power beats Civ 3 as THE worst Civ game ever, and I can't really put my finger on what they did wrong. The game had a strong base for sure, but it just never could catch my attention. The gameplay was also a little too slow for my tastes.

In my opinion, the Civ games are shitty. Slow, boring, and in the end turned into somethin of an endurance because it was turn based. If you want strategy, play Red Alert! Not RA 2 tho. That sucked balls...

On the subject of greatest game ever, uh, DooM?!

Think about it.

What other game:

b) Has fuck-knows how many Source Ports available to enhance it?

It must be.

It all depends on your cup of tea. Someone who is a fan of turn-based strategy is going to say that Civilization is the best game ever, but a fan of FPS is going to vehemently disagree. What we really should do is ask what the best game of each genre is.

I've wasted hundreds of hours on DeeZire, which is a mod for Yuri's Revenge, which is an add-on for RAII.
Any CnC fans should definitely check it out.
Vice City held me for a few weeks, the whole 'own the city' aspect was very cool, especially when you pick how you play.
After four years of trying to get the Goldeneye levels to work on Unreal Tournament, the night before last made it all worth it, being able to have mouse precision in the complex/stack/facility/temple is awesome.

There are so many things wrong with what you just said. Ocarina of Time was much better than Wind Waker. Wind Waker was a pretty good game, it just didn't seem to mesh very well with the existing Zelda universe.

Wha!!?! It meshes perfectly, just 200 odd years down the timeline. It's an excellent game with a wonderful story, beautiful graphics/animation and really good gameplay. Sailing you ship around is marvelous - it reacts very realistically.

And I can't stress how much I love those graphics. Originally when the GameCube came out, the demo disc with the box had a preview of a highly realistic-looking battle between Link and Gannondorf (or as realstic as you can get with a boy in a green miniskirt). I was horrified when I first found out they were going for a more 'cartoony' look to the game. however the cell animation is just gorgeous--the water and smoke effects are a dream to look at. Overall, the game harks back to Link to the Past in it's style and look.

My only gripe is, as with most Zeldas, the bosses are too easy.

so i guess no one agrees that Xenogears for PSX is one of the best games ever.....

and Tactics Ogre is WAY better than FF Tactics. the story line dominates, the characters are way better (they don't just stop talking after they join your party, for one), and the magic system and classes are just more interesting.

FPS... don't play a great deal of those... the last one i remember playing was Duk Nukem 3D when i was in middle school.

Turn Based Strategy... can't think of one i liked, unless you count Ogre Battle/Tactics Ogre as TBS. RTS: definitely Total Annihilation: Kingdoms.

and yes, they will be making Final Fantasy games until the day my great great grandchildren have great great grand children. but the old ones are good. the newer ones (8+) are mostly movie, not really a game at all. FF1, 2, 3, 4 (American 2), 5, and 6 (American 3) were beautiful, FF7 was really good. all the others were just mediocre or really bad.
