A Confession From Snubis

07-04-2004, 02:41
I haven't posted to this forum for a while (and most likely probably never will again) so I figure I might as well reveal the truth about myself to the group.

I am a troll.

Yes, I am an internet troll. I've been trolling this forum on and off from the day Snubis was created. I'm sure some of you are not surprised upon reading this. In fact, it is I who is surprised that no one realized earlier. All one has to do is an author search for Snubis (I have since changed by nickname to Xomicron) on Google Groups (http://groups.google.com) to see that I am a usenet troll. And a prolific one at that. The alt.spacebastards group is where I usually hang out. I do remember someone exposing the truth about my newsgroup identity a few months back but it was largely ignored.

I was many other troll nations as well. Dark Apes, Holy Child and all subsequent spawns, and others that I cannot remember. On the other hand, I was not a crude troll and I never posted crude material like "Count Dickula" and others did. They will not tarnish my name. The moderators always attempted to find the original nation of my puppets, as did many brown nosing losers that haunt this forum. None ever knew my truth IP address, which is why IP bans never worked.

I figured it's about time everyone knew the truth. You've been a great audience.

And other well known facts.

Has it occured to you that despite being asinine in your statments, the Snubis acount never got Deated because you stayed within the TOS? As opposed to your puppets that got fried every time they acted up?

I mean - I don't recall you ever being banned.

You can act all superior and assume that the Mods never figured you out. But you'll never know for sure will you.....

I missed it when you first outed, but I did stumble across a poster named 'Snubis' on Usenet to rec.games.computer.ultima.dragons, looking for information about the odlest still running website. I found this interesting, because I had asked the same question on NationStates about two hours previously. I was fairly certain that it was you, and that you were using some research methods that you might not immediately volunteer (ie: asking somebody else).

I didn't carry out any further investigation into your usenet habits.

I can't say that I pursued your Usenet posting any further than that, and to be honest trolls acting individually on Usenet bother me very little - I am quick to shout 'plonk' and see no more of them. The one thing that I really do not like are mass troll invasions of groups: there it becomes just too much effort to hunt them all down.

(PS: You can rest assured that my Usenet posting name is not the same as the one I post under here.)

Yes: some trolls are actually entertaining and are not out to actually hurt anyone.

Frex -

Troll: "Spaghetti Westerns got their name from the tinned spaghetti that was used on set for entrails whenever characters were shot in the stomach."

Asshole: "Nobody cares about your shite."

Ah--see I never considered anyone who was just having harmless fun to be a troll--my definition of troll was just someone who was a dick just to be a dick. I may have to readjust my way of thinking on this.

Ah--see I never considered anyone who was just having harmless fun to be a troll--my definition of troll was just someone who was a dick just to be a dick. I may have to readjust my way of thinking on this.

Well, different people have different definitions (obviously), and some newsgroups even have their own 'pet trolls' who are their to bait the unwary and cause entertainment. To some people trolling is a good natured game - and the troll post will eventually be revealed as such with the announcement "YHBT. YHL. HAND." ("You have been trolled. You have lost. Have a nice day."), while to others it is just a way of causing chaos and destroying any sense of community that exists in a newsgroup. Any of the little ructions or disagreements I have seen here on NationStates pale into insignificance against the bright fires of a fully armed and operational newsgroup at the height of a flamewar. Things can get nasty.

A true troll is quite wiley in their ways but can be spotted by the more intelligent posters. A true troll never has to reveal themself as being a troll, because they would be skilled enough to get someone else reveal it for them. In this definition of a troll, Snubis has failed in the attempt to be a troll. Until this very thread he was making very good progress. Now he is nothing more than an interferring pest at the best. A person that wishes to be considered a troll, needs to earn the title in the correct manner.

A true troll is quite wiley in their ways but can be spotted by the more intelligent posters.

However, some of the most brilliant trolls are amazingly simple and unspottable: such as the possibly mythical "Does poetry have to rhyme?" post which supposedly appeared early in the days of one of the first poetry newsgroups and reportedly started a flamewar that burnt for years.*

* Note: the gaps in the Deja/Google archives of the newsgroups mean that not all posts have been cached for posterity, and so it is not possible to authoritatively determine whether many things did or did not occur during the early days of Usenet.

hell, 1997 is hard enough in some cases

I would be surprised if those weren't about somewhere, but yeah: there was no systematic backup going on until quite recently. Bits and pieces were just snagged from here and there. I read an interesting article about one of the main archvies which was kept at the University of Toronto, Department of Zoology, of all places, but I can't seem to locate it right now - very much a shoestring operation that struggled to afford enough tape storage to get everything down (and failed).

i don't know if it's still the case, but back when i was trawling through my old ng i found all sorts of weird thread breaks and merges - multiple threads with the same title from different groups mushed together in funny ways. and then there are the bits that exist only in quotes because of people using the x-no-archive command

Some of the x-no-archive header messages are likely to be in the minor archives that Google have shied away from dealing with:

We are aware that there are many small collections of Usenet articles that were saved by many dedicated individuals in the Usenet community. Please understand that we cannot undertake the gargantuan task of merging these with our existing archive.

He's all but destroyed the alt.startrek.vs.starwars newsgroup.

Well all the posts by Snubis on that NG that show at the moment on my server come from one address, and all the Xomicron posts come from a single address - is a killfile too hard to use in defense of the NG?

Note: I have added both Snubis & Xomicron to my killfile, so I shouldn't be seeing any posts by them coming from the addresses that they are currently using, so forgive me if I miss any interesting developments.

This thread, and the Anthrus and Raysia thread. He was deleted for being a confessed troll.

"Anthrus and Raysia thread"? which one is that?

i just really wanna scope it out, and read those beautiful mod words...after all, the forum's IQ just improved by 50% simply by his deletion.

The immediate cause of his deletion was his behavior in here (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=138292). But his behavior there wasn't all that terrible. I think the real reason for his deletion is his "confession" in the thread we're in. He admitted that his goal the entire time had been to make people angry, and he acted smug about the fact that the mods had not caught him. He also admitted that he was responsible for vile puppets such as Dark Apes. Apparently, this "confession" essentially marked him for death for the slightest slip.

Snubis noted that he/she was indeed a troll, and that confession meant he was breaking the rules. Therefore, he was deleted for intentionally breaking the rules of the forum.

all, muchas gracias. i was wondering how long it would take for the mods to take him at his word...after all, he basically bragged about how he has broken the forum rules, so i was waiting for a mod to come in and issue the appropriate punishment.

hehehe, yeah i was just reading that. much as i have differed with Steph, i'd have to say she's right on the money with that.

but it's too bad in one sense; i had a notepad file saved that was my responses to Snubis...since he always tried to make the same arguments (no matter how many times i refuted them) i started just copying from that file and posting the same disproofs. he never did figure out how to respond, he'd just run away and then post his crap in another thread. :P

Snubis had stock lines for several topics, and he'd post them even if they had nothing to do with what people were arguing. Some of the ones I remember are:

"Separation of church and state is not in the constitution."

"America is not a democracy; it's a republic."

"How can you hate a man you don't know?" [Used for George W. Bush or anyone else he liked.]

What others do people remember?

I always wrote a new response each time...I preferred the organic feel, which was so very wasted. :(

i liked his "homosexuality is unnatural" and "homosexuals have the same marital rights as heterosexuals." both arguments were thoroughly demolished at least half a dozen times, but that never took the wind out of his sails.

Ah yes, I remember those now. Homosexuality was one of his main obsessions. Compared to his behavior on other forums, he was relatively polite about it here. I found that Snubis was posting on some "conservative-only" forum that someone had advertised here. But he dropped any pretense of a civilized debate there, ranting about the evils of "faggots" and "homos."

Just makes me wonder--how empty is your life that you make up a persona to be an asshole online? I mean, I feel empty enough as it is that I spend as much time as I do online, but at least I'm honest.

My favourates was where after putting out the bible references as to why homosexuals were evil, he'd say I think it was "I'm arguing politics, not religion." or something along those lines...

Ever do a web search for "Snubis"? This name pops up on forums all over the web (and it seems to be the same guy, because he's talking about the same stuff). And of course, he probably had countless puppets on NS and elsewhere. My guess is that Mumakata belonged to him too, because they were very similar in politics and personality. Of course, they could have just as easily been two different angry right-wing trolls.

I wonder, if Snubis is a troll, then maybe all wacky conservatives are trolls.
Maybe not just on Nationstates, maybe not even just on the whole internet, but in real life as well!
Imagine Texas saying one day that they were just joking.

seriously. i just don't get people like Snubis; they reveal their diabolical plan to trick us all, and are so proud that they managed to deceive players on an internet forum into thinking they meant what they posted. wow, it sure does take a lot of skill to do that, they really are our superiors. especially since they live their lives on forums and spend so many hours carefully perfecting an on-line troll persona. i wish i could grow up to be just like them.
