has anybody else seen this movie? It's a somewhat recent Israeli film about an oupost on the syrian-israeli border, and more importlantly, the affair between two israeli soldiers and the day-to-day life of their unit. I found it to be a fascinating look at a nation under arms, and a damn good movie besides that.

It is not the first choice for someone who wants to get acquanted with Israeli movies, but its a very good movie. Its probably R-rated for language and homosexual love scenes though.

well, uuh, right. there is that. not one for the kids, what with the men making out.

I haven't seen many israeli movies, but the few I have I've really liked...are there any must-see ones?

Well, for old but good ones, check out Salah Shabbati or anything else by Ephraim Kishon. For new ones- "Yana's friends" (its a hilarious movie look at the microcosm of the Israeli society), "Saint Clara", "Kippour" and "Kadosh"- two movies by Amos Gitai. Maybe "Circus Palestine" as well- but I don't like this movie. There is a great deal of colflict between me and its maker, Eyal Halfon, who was one of my movie teachers.

I saw Kippur....as long as that was the one about '73 war. That was one of the better war movies I've seen. Not a single shot fired onscreen, and a lot of bored slogging through the mud....

Yana's friends, though- I'll have to check that one out.

Since you seem to know a bit about Israeli culture, I just have to ask- the singer "Rita" (one of her songs was used in yossi and jagger)- is she something like the Israeli cher?

Well, I an not sure about "Israeli Cher", but she is one of the more popular Israeli singers. Awesome voice, probably the second best in Israeli music. You won't hear her performing in the US though- she was denied entrance because she was born in Iraq

dammit! I really liked that "your soul" song. One of the best ballads I've heard in a real long time.

Well, Iraqis are technically good guys now (or after june 20th?), so hopefully she'll be around here soon....

They tried to deny entrance to our defense minister Shaul Mofaz too- because he was born in Iran

For Israeli music, by the way, check out Ahinoam Nini (English scene name Noa). If you remember the theme song from "Life is Beautiful"- its hers.

I'll have to see if I can find any of that. Thanks for answering some of my questions- I personally find Israel fascinating as a society.
