School District Bans Pink Clothing

MERRILLVILLE, Ind. -- Officials have banned pink clothing for the remainder of the school year out of concerns that the color has become associated with gang activity.

Administrators last week told students at the city's high school and two middle schools to avoid wearing pink clothing or accessories, said Michael Berta, associate superintendent in the northwestern Indiana district.

"There is no evidence of gang activity. But because of the growing use of the color pink we decided to be proactive. Girls and boys are supposed to avoid wearing pink," Berta said Monday.

None of the district's 6,500 students have been disciplined for wearing pink, he said.

Berta said the issue came up at a recent administrator's meeting when a principal remarked that there were more students wearing pink. "Not only were there more kids wearing pink T-shirts and pink hats, but also pink shoelaces, which was unusual," he said.

Clothing retailers said pink is a popular color in current styles.

"About 30 percent of my items for this season are pink. It's 'in.' I have pink in every shade," said Amanda Zipko, owner of Amanda Gayle's boutique in Schererville.

madd people in NY wear pink..but I don't think it's a gang thing as far as I know. Not unless I'm in a gang and don't know? lol

Its not like that.

Seriously, what kind of dude wheres a loud pink shirt?

There was an issue in a few cities (LA and Dallas, I think) that banned certain types of clothing because some schools did have a real gang problem. This school district is just stupid.

But, its no where near as bad as France banning students from wearing Jewish symbols out of fear they will be attacked. Thats an issue.

Doesn't surprise me at all. In a DODs school overseas, three girls got suspended for accidentally all wearing a red shirt the same day. Our principal sucked: he got our name wrong at my sis' graduation, and he was sooooo gang paranoid...

Keep in mind that this is one a military base...in Germany! How many gangs could there possibly be? And what the heck could they possibly do, on a base with a couple thousand armed soldiers!? True, they could sneak off base, but that wouldn't help much...they'd have to come back eventually...

in my experience, most school administrators don't have a frelling clue about much of anything, especially when it comes to youth culture or school security.

I don't know. I'd be pretty scared of a gang that was confident enough to wear all pink, knowing the kind of crap they'd get.

Pink is the new red. Seriously. Many schools have banned the wearing of red and blue because of thier classic gang association, so a lot of kids have turned to pink as a substitute for red. Pink shirts are a hot seller in my area for this reason.

The Merrillville ban is just bad backlash from the riots at Seymour High School.
They had a girl get killed and some of the students, who liked her, started wearing pink items in memory of her. The students who didn't like her took up sides against them. Many riots over several days. Now Indiana School Administrators are paranoid of any increase in the wearing of any color (more so with pink)

That is one of the reasons I am currently going to school to be a teacher as well.

As a side note: Banning the use of certain colors does not discourage gang activity, it just makes it much harder for the faculty and staff of the schools to discern who is a gang member. You would think the people running the school systems would have figured this out by now. (Unless you are as cynical as I am, of course.)

Actually, school officials would just know a few people in a gang and see who associates with them. Its not that tough.

You know what would fix all this? Uniforms.

Most school officials are not intelligent enough to do that. It's very nice of you to assume that they are all perceptive enough to do that though. I'm sure they appreciate your confidence in their abilities.

You know what would fix all this? Uniforms.

Maybe. It would depend on how it was handled.

Actually, the teachers I know were informed of this trick when they were learning their trade. You seem to think these particular students are a lot smarter than they really are.

Good for them, I just wish every administrator/teacher/staff member was so informed. I said nothing about the intelligence of any student, either positive or negative.
