after all these people are smart enough to plan the 911...what am i missing?

How about the element of surprise? No one would expect two in a row and security relaxes?
It is stated that the explosives and detonator match the previous bomb.
How about 3 in a row?:

MADRID, Spain - Three suspects in the Madrid railway bombings blew themselves up Saturday in a building while surrounded by police, killing one special forces agent and wounding 11 police officers, the interior minister said.

Also this interesting tidbit from the same article:
El Pais newspaper reported that Spain is the main al-Qaida base in Europe and said police believed al-Qaida could strike again here.

It is stated that the explosives and detonator match the previous bomb.
It says only the Explosives...not the detonator...unless you have another source...
"But in both cases, the detonators appeared to be devices commonly found in the mining industry, he told reporters."

These are two separate terrorist actions, however it highlights the point that even after the train bombings they're still fighting.

I found this interesting too:
After the Madrid bombings, the Homeland Security Department announced a series of security initiatives, but with no major new funding plans.

My link was to a story about a few terrorists getting in a gunfight with police and chanting Arabic while they blew themselves up, the originally link from this thread was about another foiled bomb attempt.

If these are Moroccans, the only country they really hate (other than Mali) is Spain.

If these are Moroccans, the only country they really hate (other than Mali) is Spain.
Suspicion over the bombings has focused on an alleged Morocco-based terrorist cell believed to have links to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network and on al-Qaida itself.
Could it be that they hate the US by default?

The hatreds do go a long way back between Spain and Morocco, but there are much more recent events that build on that bitter foundation.
Here's one: http://www.indexonline.org/indexindex/20020724_morocco.shtml
AP report July 17, 2002: "Spain accuses Morocco of failing to crack down on smuggling rings that ferry tens of thousands of illegal immigrants every year across the Strait of Gibraltar."
September 2002 AP: "But Morocco was determined to bring up the question of sovereignty of Spain's North African territories, which include the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla, as well as a number of islands, including Perejil.
Morocco regards them as occupied territories and wants them back.
Spain says sovereignty of the territories is not up for discussion.
The BBC correspondent in Rabat says that relations now appear to have sunk to rock bottom."
Ceuta and Melilla are within sight of the Moroccan coast but have long-established Spanish settlements. They are among five islands claimed by both countries.

They can't get over the crusades, let alone the Reconquista.
