Here's info on how a swedish compass maker can get away using the name of a US Navy warship and not get in trouble with the State Dept. fr doing it :-)
Montana class battleship
Five battleships of the Montana-class battleships (BB-67 through BB-71) were authorized under the 1940 "Two Ocean Navy" building program and funded in 1941. They were the last of their kind ordered by the U.S. Navy. With an intended standard displacement of 60,500 tons, they were nearly a third larger than the preceding Iowa class, four of which were the final battleships actually completed by the United States. The Montanas were intended to carry twelve 16-inch/50-caliber guns, three more than the earlier class. Protection against underwater weapons and shellfire was also greatly enhanced. They would have been the only new World War II-era U.S. battleships to be adequately armored against guns of the same power as their own. To achieve these advances, the Montana class was designed for a slower maximum speed than the very fast Iowas and had a beam too wide to pass through the existing Panama Canal locks.
Completion of the Montana class would have given the late 1940s U.S. Navy a total of seventeen new battleships, a considerable advantage over any other nation, or probable combination of nations. The Montanas also would have been the only American ships to come close to equalling the massive Japanese battleship Yamato. However, World War II's urgent requirements for more aircraft carriers, amphibious and anti-submarine vessels resulted in suspension of the Montanas in May 1942, before any of their keels had been laid. In July 1943, when it was clear that the battleship was no longer the dominant element of sea power, their construction was cancelled.
The Montana class would have consisted of five ships, to be constructed at three Navy Yards:
* Montana (BB-67), to be built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania;
* Ohio (BB-68), to be built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard;
* Maine (BB-69), to be built at the New York Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York;
* New Hampshire (BB-70), to be built at the New York Navy Yard; and
* Louisiana (BB-71), to be built at the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia.
General Characteristics
* Displacement: 60,500 tons (standard); 70,965 tons (full load)
* Length: 921' 3" (280.80m)
* Beam: 121' 2" (36.93m)
* Powerplant: 172,000 horsepower steam turbines, producing a 28 knot maximum speed
* Armament (Main Battery): Twelve 16"/50 guns in four triple turrets
* Armament (Secondary Battery): Twenty 5"/54 guns in ten twin mountings (ten guns on each side of the ship) :shock:
Had they been built those ships would have kicked some serious butt, each one of those 16 inch shells weighed 2,000 pounds and had a range of 20 miles

Not possible, the Enterprise era is long ago and I know the Silva company. the commercial is not 15 years old (the time when Nimitz came in service), at max 4 years old
Anyway, I understand that a lot of US persons don't like the commercial, but I woulld give it a award, it is just GREAT. (could be real regarding the US)

That is your (dumb) opinion, humor is humor but some guys with a agenda have difficulties with it. Or do yoy think that the worlds largest compass manufacturer has a agenda like you have? No, it is just a great commercial and it is undesrtanded by the majority in the world ...

This joke is told as a WWII era story of a US coast guard lighthouse and a us navy ship. Interservice Rivalry. This joke has also been reprinted at least three times in Reader's Digest Humor in Uniform. The real joke is they couldn't come up with their own copy for the ad. :P

1) The USS Enterprise is one of our nuclear aircraft carriers and is still very much in service. Every generation of aircraft carriers has one named Enterprise.
2) Not the commercial, the joke itself is very old. Its been kicked around here a long time. I heard it as the Enterprise vs a Canadian lighthouse.

Being affiliated with the US military myself, (and yes that joke is pretty old, but still great) I always like a bit of humor at the Navy's expense.

It didn't happen.
How are we supposed to be humiliated for something we didn't do.

Well you are more dumb than funny to us who have a sense of humor. Guess that you would have liked the joke if it was a EU or another non US ship, it is just a very good and awarded commercial. I understand that Nazis and other US extreme republicans don't get it but perhaps it is just a lack of intelligence and not a lack of humor. To appreciate some humor, you need some intelligence..
I, like most liked it a lot :D , also if it would have been the UK or Holland, France...but the joke just fits the US because of the IQ..., friendly fire aso, that is why it is a US ship and not another..
I feel pitty for people who live the sad life for even not laughing with great humor.
And I forget the Latin sentence but in French they call it "Les gouts et les couleurs, ça se discute pas!"....

Friendly fire is a universal concept for independantly operating wings and squads having to communicate with each other, and moreso for allies. Theres nothing humiliating or dishonoring about it, the US has in fact been pretty good about minimizing it, despite their zero tolerance and high agression.
As for US IQ, its not really relevant, but US intelligence is way up there IMO, considering that if you dont get noteworthy education, you likely wont get anything important or even capable of covering a lot of basic expenses. Its effective and the US is still a (heck, the premier,) spot for skilled labor, although wages are high enough to chase companies out anyway. The US is one the only countries where you will find laborers possesing both high intelligence and ridiculously rigid work ethic, but it comes at a price.
As for the ship joke, thats uberold, as has already been pointed out. Its also not feasible according to Snopes, it was more likely a humor ploy than something even remotely related to a real event.

Others need to also lighten up and not try and slam the US at every opportunity.

I agree, twisting this commerical into relevance because of friendly fire??? my god people you fight a war, mistakes will happen. Oh and ummm, a Destroyer is the second largest vessel in one of our fleets?? With an actuall captain on board to boot. Thats usually a LT. Commander or Commander's post.

That was a funny comercial. But what would have been funnier is if after the guy says its a "lighthouse, mate" the USS Montana lights up that friggin' thing with its 16 inch guns and blows it out of its way. Then the US Navy could use the comercial too. "Navy - Accelerate your Life"
