A Ukrainian girl who undertakes motorcycle trips into the forbidden zone around the reactor of Chernobyl, including Pripjat, the deserted town right near the reactor which had the melt down on 04/26/86 has had permission to take photo's and publicise them.
She took many pictures.

I have to agree...though she carries a dosimeter, and it doesn't seem to read extreme doses. I would, however, like to see pictures of her in a few years...another monument to Soviet inefficiency.

I feel for those people. It's a relic of the past; let's make sure the circumstances that brought it about never happen again. The souls of those who died demand nothing less.

Interesting.
Makes me wonder how many trips it will take for her to rack up lethal doses. She often refers to other visits, "I never go in buildings when I come here alone. I get a girl who lives here to guide."

but if Chernobyl is that radioactive how do they continue to run the other reactor(s?) in the complex. i'm sure i read in the last few years that the Ukraine still ran it and couldn't shut it down because it provided a signifigant and irreplacable portion of their electric power.

The entire plant has been shut down, as of '01, I do believe. The sarcophagus around reactor 4 has been failing for years, so, to ensure the safety of all (even though it's too late now), the shut down the entire complex.
It's had sporadic fires for years prior to the closing, too, which was more than a motivation to shut it down completely.
However, there is the question of the 25-50 tons of nuclear material missing from the plant... some say it was wasted in the '86 explosions/fires, some say it was buried beneath the plant when the reactor blew through the roof.

That site is creepy and disturbing...
I'd like to go to a deserted town. Without the radiation of course...
