ok, I need to know what brand of usb flash drive should I buy. I've seen several different kinds, and the prices really vary. I've seen a 256 for 35 bucks and for 75 bucks. What brand is good?

Generally speaking, you get what you pay for. But Kingston are supposed to be pretty good

Why do you need a USB flash drive?

for storage. My old computer got hit by lightnight and my new computer doesn't have a floppy drive(although they are sending me one). I've also heard that they are much better, faster, smaller (obvously) and they hold a ton more stuff.

why? do you know something I don't?

Well, a DVD-R. More expensive, but it has more functionality than a flash drive.

I don't have that, I have a regular burner, just not a dvd burner. The problem I see with those is....

A) they are big and bulky
B) they get scratched easy

I can't help with flash drives, but I can tell you a fairly good indicator of quality is the warranty on the product. How long is it, what does it cover, how much is the weird little fee for sending back for repair and how accessable are the authorised repair places?

Another good test of quality is to ask at the returns desks of several computer stores 'which flash drives are most returned?' Also, if the brand name isn't familiar at all, it's a pretty good hint to move on.

You'll find a lot of the computer sites (like pcworld) will have evaluations of various drives. Good luck!

Good call. I'd also recommend an external hard drive, but those are also big and bulky. But they can normally hold an extremely large amount of information.

although, i think the $35 one will be USB1.1. It is probably better to get USB2.0 (the $75 one)

im not sure on what the differenses are but they are supposed to be better in some way

The difference is in transfer rates the USB 2.0 is quite a bit faster than 1.1 (I can't remember by how much though). For a 64 or a 128 stick, it probably wouldn't make a huge difference, maybe even as high as 256. Anything higher and you're gonna wait a while to fill the sucker.

so I thinkin a 64mb stick would be ok right? I mean thats alot. Unless i find a 128 for cheap.

Depends on what you're transfering, but unless you have a couple thousand mp3's or something, 64 Mb will probably do you fine. Another point to consider, if your motherboard doesn't support USB 2.0 (ie a cheaper board) then getting a USB 2.0 key is kinda useless.

If it's just a small amount more I would recommend the 128, and save upgrading later, however make sure it is compatible with your computer, I tried using one on my old 98 laptop, and it kept corrupting the files.

err...
- check you installed the drivers correctly
-make sure you right click on the icon in my computer and click 'eject' before pulling it out. I had to format my pendrive the day after i bought it because of that

Well it is a brand new computer that the insurance company sent me. It has several usb ports along with a 7 in 1 card reader so I think it support just about everything.
