Why I'm glad to live the North.

This was close, I don't know if any Americans will care but some terrorist planned "what the security forces believe could have been the most devastating bombing campaign in the UK." But like most things in Britain, it happened in the south.

Although it does make me feel safer knowing that we have a half decent anti-terrorism security. Interestingly enough this comes the morning after a cabinet member (shame, I forget which one) announced in Parliament yesterday that Britain has one of the best anti-terrorism networks in the world (although he was using this to push Londons olympic bid).
There are places in the North that could be vunerable, although if you bombed Yorkshire I'm not sure it would make much difference.
I used to live there so I know
There is a risk though, terrorist could attack Leeds, Manchester, Rotherham, Barnsley, Huddersfield or worst Sheffield, the center Meddowhall usually has lots of people in.

we could do without meadowhall though couldn't we? :?
Yes, too many car parks and pointless shops. But it is a nice landmark when I go on trips to Yorkshire, I at least know where I am then. I am off there this weekend so hopefully there will be no attacks on orkshire then.

We've lived through one. But I think the terrorists will go after London, even though it probably has tighter security. They want to hit somewhere which everyone knows about (out of interest, how many non-Europeans know about Manchester?).

more people die from smoking or in a car accident than from hypothetical terrorist attacks, so you should be more scared of your car...

Yes. But it is far more fun to be scared about something 'glamarous' than something dull. Anyway I don't have a car, I try to walk everywhere when I can.
Has anyone seen the Guardian Interactive Guide to Terrorism? (http://www.guardian.co.uk/flash/0,5860,848249,00.html). I don't think I have ever read something that looked do nice but learned do little.
But women over 40 have more chance of being killed in a terrorist attack than they have of getting married.
It wasn't 'close' in any way. The plot - if any - would have been only in the early stages. No target was chosen. All they've found is a bag of fertilizer. No fully constructed bomb. No detonater.
All arrested have been arrested 'on suspiscion'. Nobody's been convicted.
They 'may' have foiled a bomb plot. The dudes 'might' have been planning something.
Again, the intelligence (hah!) services and the government are whipping up a frenzy of maybe's if's and possibilities.

Yeah but it is something to do whilst I wait for 11:00 to roll around.
And also, I don't consider half a tonne as a 'bag.' And I haven't seen any government spinning (or maybe they're that good  )

I saw that last night. I can't answer if many Americans will care, but some of do. Sometimes I think only a massive dose of Prozac in the worlds water supply has any hope of calming people down enough to actually resolve all these issues. (I know. Some folks don't want to resolve anything, some folk likemurder and mayhem. But something has to have a positive effect.)

Ah, one good thing is that Scotland normally gets left alone. :D

A half-tonne bag. The same half-tonne bags farmers buy.

Not quite! Two days after Madrid, I was travelling back home from my work in Edinburgh. At the station before my stop we were ordered off the train because of a 'security threat' at my station.
Turns out a bag of shorts and a badmington racket(spl?) had been left on the previous train. The conducters were too scared to move it. Why anyone would attack North Berwick is beyond my understanding.
