If you're trying to rip him off, go for it.

It probably depends a very smart 3 year old may understand its significance and any 3 year old may understand that its important and will avoid tearing it up.

now that i think of it maturity may also be a factor. I saw a 5 yr old rip up a $10 bill once.

Depends on how good a parent you are.

This has nothing to do with a parent, but with the kid being smart or not. Smart kids generally are generally mature much faster than the average kid, the parents can change very little, if not nothing about how fast their child gets mature. You can't force or learn a 1 year old to walk or to speak, you can't learn a toddler to think abstract, these things come from the child itself.

What if it has it in coins?

What if it has it in coins?
Then the kid will choke.

Hmm...

$3 dollars equals 3 one dollar coins, or one 2 dollar coin and one one dollar coin... Very difficult to rip up... Or eat...

Oh, you were talking in terms of American dollars. Sorry, you had me confused for a second.

I personally, if i were a 3 yr old , I would have snatched the three dollars, stuffed it down the front of my pants, and run away. I was a greedy little bastard. I knew money when I saw it.

I believe I wasn't much older than that when I started getting an allowance of $2 a week. My guess is that he won't understand it if his wants are met already. If his parents are in the habit of telling him that the shiny toy he desires costs money, and he can't have the toy unless he has the money (as my bourgois parents so helpfully tried to teach me), then he probably would understand what it is, if nothing else than as a means to an end.

Yeah, I knew money too. When I was 8 I lost a bet with my parents for 100 dollars (luckily I also won a bet for 200...). This was all Canadian dollars, btw, so it wasn't an obscenely obscene amount.

Still... a solid amount for an 8-year-old to owe.

Question: if you were working in a shop would you accept money from a 3 year old? I wouldn't, unless I knew they had the approval of their parents/guardians/whatever.

Money is relative: what $3 means to you or me is very different to what it means to someone who does not have the ability to spend it. Similarly, it also has a very different meaning to someone to whom it is insignificant - can Bill Gates still understand what $3 is?

Well, a three-year old is usually in the company of his parents anyway, so I can't see that accepting the money would be too out of order, as they would stop him if they weren't agreeing with his behavior.

Which kind of suggests one of two things to me: either, it isn't realy his/her money, if they maintain the position of authority, or they do not believe that he/she understands sufficiently to be responsible.

*haven't read all posts*

are you the parent?

Ok, I'm raising this two year old(he was given to me to raise because his mom didn't want him), actually he is almost 2 1/2 but he knows what money is, and knows not to tear it up. He knows that if I give him a dollar we can go to the store and get him a truck. So...I wouldhave to say no they would not tear it up.

I certainly did. I was into finance and making interest loans to my family at the age of 5. So I knew what it was at least at 3.
