i just heard on the news that a grandmother is going to be a surrogate, and give birth to her own grandchildren, but religious and political groups are trying to stop them!

do you think this is fair?
29-03-2004, 10:38
ummm, legally that is incest, no?

the grandmother is giving birth as she is a surrogate for her daughter
29-03-2004, 10:41
Am I misreading this? A Grandma wants to have sex with her son-in-law to give birth to her grandchildren?

That's what it sounds like.

the grandmother is giving birth as she is a surrogate for her daughteryeah, ok, that's what I thought... that is called Incest... duh?

wrong, she is being a surrogate mother, only carrying the baby until it is born, nothing else

That's not incest. Incest is if two family members engage in sexual intercourse. The daughter and her husband (presumably), are going to give egg and sperm to laboratory, where lab technicians will artificially inseminate the egg with the sperm, and after the zygote has grown to a certain size, it will be transplanted into the soon to be grandmother who will carry the baby to term. I'm assuming that there is a biological reason that the couple cannot concieve.

What are the religious groups' justifications for opposing this?
29-03-2004, 10:55
the father is megans husband, michaelthen yeah, that's incest. Sperm from a son-in-law, is injected into a legally-recognized family member. That's incest.

It's "unnatural".

You know, like penicillin.

idiot raysia! i think the already fertilized egg is going to be put into the grandmother, as the daughter is unable to give birth to a baby

I think if someone wants to do that, great; it's their body, their life, let them have the freedom to choose what they want to do.

Usually the egg is fertilized in a laboratory and then it is the egg that is "injected" into the surrogate mother. The only thing the sperm touches is a plastic cup and the egg. Since no actual sexual intercourse occurs between anyone, incest, legaly anyway, is impossible.

Michael's sperm will fertilize Megan's egg. Then, when the zygote reaches a certain maturity, it will be placed into the mother's womb to carry the baby to term. The son-in-law is not impregnating the mother-in-law.

The egg comes from the mother, not the grandmother. If it came from the grandmother, then she wouldn't be a surrogate mother would she?

The son-in-law is not impregnating the mother-in-law....I'm missing something... probably just from lack of understanding of female anatomy... but if she can't have kids, why does she still have eggs? is it just something wrong with her tubes or something?

i think it is just that she cannot carry a baby until it is born

There could be something wrong with her tubes, or her womb could prevent a child from coming to term, or the eggs might form, but not drop, or the husband may not produce enough sperm naturally to fertilize the woman's egg. There are a million possible problems.

Did you realise that incest cannot be commited between individuals of the same sex. It is not actually against the law. Strange but true

Raysia, I really must ask - how old are you? Because most of the questions and "opinions" you post on this forum remind me of something I might here from an eight year old.

As for the issue, if someone is trying to prevent this based on religious views, they are *way* out of line. The grandmother wants to do this for her daughter, and is obviously capable, sounds like she's just a great mother who is willing to go through nine months of suffering all over again just so her daughter can have a child of her own. In fact, the grandmother's relation to the parents might actually decrease the possibilities of problems, since she will be closely related to the child. Aunts have been allowed to be surrogate mothers, there is no reason why a grandmother whose body is capable should not.

The "it's unnatural" argument is overused and completely useless. If God didn't want us to discover technology and medicine, the abilities wouldn't be there. If you don't like technological and medical advances, go live in the woods, covered by a fig leaf, and leave the rest of us alone.
