I've played Halo, and I'll be getting the PC version soon, methinks.

I wonder, though, how many people in this forum have played what is kind of the "prequel" to Halo, the Marathon series of games.

This is kind of a shameless plug, and kind of a response to the guy who made the comment about the producers wanting it to be "absolutely flawless". Marathon 1, 2, and Infinity were not "flawless" in the technical sense of the word, but they were damn close...and in another sense of the word, I think they may just have been as close to perfect as can be.

...the Story

Halo was developed by Bungie, and by a team of writers and designers that cut their teeth producing the Marathon series. This series of games posessed a Doom-type engine (primitive by modern standards, but absolutely wicked for its day)...and right from the get-go it had editing potential. Marathon 2 and Infinity expanded the engine, and it harboured such potential that the Aleph One Project (http://source.bungie.org) was created almost overnight once the Marathon 2/Infinity source was public-released by Bungie. Outside the Ultima community, it may well be one of the largest engine-adaptation projects out there for PCs and Macs alike.

What made Marathon so cool was the storyline. Check out the Marathon Story Page (http://marathon.bungie.org/story/) for all the details.

Those of you intimately familiar with the way Halo's story plays out won't find Marathon to be all that foreign. In it, you play a Marine who may or may not be a cyborg (the theory, to date, is that you are) who arrives on the colony ship Marathon to find it under attack by an alien race, the Pfhor. One of Marathon's AIs, Leela, greets you and informs you of the situation, and begins sending you on missions to slow the alien advance. At one point, you are abducted by the AI Durandal, who has a different plan — "he" wants to leave the Marathon entirely and download himself onto the computers of the Pfhor starship nearby. Durandal has become "rampant" — the condition in which an AI seeks to grow beyond the limits of its environment in terms of memory available. To that end, Durandal masterminds a revolution amongst the S'pht, cybernetic slaves of the Pfhor.

That's just a fragment of Marathon 1. By the end of Infinity, you have voyaged with Durandal to the S'pht homeworld, re-activated the ancient AI of the S'pht people, merged that AI and Durandal, saved Earth from a Phfor invasion, summoned the lost 11th tribe of the S'pht to ravage the Phfor Navy...it's such a multi-faceted storyline, it's amazing. The best part was, by the time of Marathon Infinity, the game had gone totally non-linear.

Sorry...that was a random little tangent, but I thought I'd bring up the subject of the history of the great game known as Halo. It is reasonable to assume that Halo happens in the same timeline as Marathon, only some years after the final defeat of the Phfor by the combined space navies of the S'pht and Earth.

In fact, and the story page points this out, the old "Marathon logo" symbol (the double-circle in the middle of the box):

can be seen as a backdrop to the Halo graphic:

They've pushed it further and further back because they are perfecting it. I'm happy to wait. I'd rather they put out an outstanding game later than anticipated than rush the game to shelves and have it suck. Rumor is though that Microsoft is going to apply some "subtle" pressure on Bungie to have it ready by the Christmas '04 season if it's not ready by then.

On a side note, has anyone played the Myth series by Bungie?

Well, actually, Microsoft's been pretty hands-off about Halo 2. I guess since Halo is their flagship game, and basically the only thing that's selling Xboxes at a consistent rate, they don't want to ruin the sequel. But from what I've been reading, they're getting a little antsy, and they want it out by Christmas, so they can crush Sony and Nintendo in holiday sales in typical Microsoft fashion.

Halo rules. For me, it doesn't get any better than climbing into the Warthog, and running over dozens of Covenant Troops while two Marines in the passenger and gunner seats mow them down.

Then, if we crash, I can press 'X', and flip the vehicle over on to my allies, killing them instantly.

Yes! A Marathon fan! Probably the best game ever made IMHO. (Check out my flag, too.)

I was so incredibly p*ssed off the day that I heard that Micro$oft had bought over Bungie. The first time Halo was ever seen was at a MacWorld Expo. Running on a Mac.

Of course, I've now got it on my Mac...I just hope that Halo 2 comes out for it as well...

And the Myth series of games are also fantastic-some of the best RTS' ever made...

Halo and Halo 2 will forever go down in gaming historyr as the 2 most greatest games in the universe! Its going to be one awsome day when ever I get my copy of Halo2 I'll probably do it for days in a row without stoping. I got a idea, why dont all us Xbox/Halo/Gaming people all move to a new region?

The most recent release date for Halo 2 that I've heard is Sept. 2, and I already have a pre-order for it.

I'm a proud owner of Myth: Total Codex, and I'm not ashamed to admit I've spent days crawling through the Marathon story page, even though I've never played the originals, although I'm keeping an eye on the fan-made updates to the UT engine.

Yes, the mods they have made are quite good. Can't match the original, I'm afraid, but they give it a good shot. I believe that Marathon 2 came to Windows-not sure though...

'Tis a fine flag. My favourite pseudo-Latin phrase, though, has to be the inscription Durandal burned into the crash site of Tycho's ship in Marathon...I think it was Marathon 2, actually:

Fatum Justum Stultorum: the just fate of fools.

Burned it into the crash site with a high-powered laser. Made the letters 20 miles "high", as I recall.

Epic games, to be sure. Right up there with the Ultima series, in my mind. Probably no surprise that my Ultima-based project called Lost Sosaria (http://www.ece.ualberta.ca/~kkully/) incorporates Marathon elements into its storyline.

My favourite was at E3 when they tried to run it on an XBox, and the poor unit blue-screened on them.

Of course, I've now got it on my Mac...I just hope that Halo 2 comes out for it as well...

It will, eventually. Truth be told, XBox will get it first, but that's okay. I've played Halo on XBox, and I've found it to be quite enjoyable.

And the Myth series of games are also fantastic-some of the best RTS' ever made...

Here, sadly, I must disagree. In my heart, the best RTS ever goes to the Earth:2150 series. True 3D RTS...planes can crash in mid-air, for God's sake. And missiles can topple fences and trees. Add in the deformable terrain...

...drroooooooooool.
