I dabble in a bit of guitar, and I used to play the bagpipes, but the majority of sounds I make come from a PC, decks, Kaos Pad, mixer and lots and lots of lovely software. Most folk won't regard those as instruments though, I'm sure.

I'm not trying to take it anywhere. I'm simply saying that to use an instrument as versatile and beautiful-sounding as the guitar, you should play more challenging/interesting stuff than Smoke on Water.

My old guitar teacher - a man I greatly - admire toured the world, essentially busking his way from Edinburgh to the Phillipines. Everywhere he went, no matter the country the same four tunes were requested. Eventually he melded them into one, creating the eclectic Smoke on the Stairway to the Hotel of the Rising California.

Yeah, mostly software based though.
In which styles do you dabble?

I'm a software man myself.

I like to try my hand at a bit of everything. I've got a couple of projects:

An ambient noize, wierd, spoken-word project. Sort of Aphex/Kid 606 on trips. Hopefully might be released. Possibly.

A techno-based group - we're trying to make some thumpin' tunes without resorting to 4tothefloor. Hoping to inject some new thinking into dance.

A digicore band. Just for fun.

A trip-hop, funky Scruff-esque solo thing.

I mainly use Fruityloops, with Cubase to back me up, and Soundforge/ Audiomulch to make some noises.

And me mates Kaos pad. :D
Plastic Hams on Sticks
25-03-2004, 12:21
All sounds pretty damn excellent.
I use Sound Forge, (even though damn Sony bought it) FruityLoops 3.56, Reason 2.5, Acid 4.0.

Mostly ambient melodic, but there are a few motif based ones in there as well.
Utopio
25-03-2004, 12:25
Cool! I like Reason a lot (should get me a copy). It's encouraging to talk with someone else who likes ambient stuff.

Where are you from? I'm in and around Edinburgh.
Plastic Hams on Sticks
25-03-2004, 12:30
I'm from Newcastle, the second one, on the colony you know.

Do you have any music hosted?
Utopio
25-03-2004, 12:40
Afraid not, yet. The guys I make tunes with are/were in a digicore band called the Digital Noize Allstars (http://www.besonic.com/BeSonic/User/0,4675,g0r0l0t0o1i160200,FF.html) and they've got a besonic account. This stuff is pretty old (about 3 years ago) and a bit dodgy, but it's a little taster.

The ambient noize project might hopefully possibly maybe getting released on 12" if we twist some arms.

If you telegram me your e-mail address I can send you an mp3 of a mediocre techno track I've done.

What 'bout you?

i play the oboe... and played the French horn for a year

trust me to pick two of the supposedly hardest instruments (or so ive been told)
25-03-2004, 12:47
I play guitar, and I used to play piano and recorder. Next year I'll start dabbling in drums in one of my music classes.

I don't exactly have "mad skillz, yo" on the guitar...for one thing, I play acoustic. I'm good enough to get by on some simple songs like "Goodbye to You" (Michelle Branch), "Drive" (Incubus), and "Everlong: acoustic" (Foo Fighters). The hardest thing I've played is "Classical Gas". I haven't had the time to challenge myself past that.

For the most part, I just write my own stuff...one or two solos, and a good 20 or so songs with lyrics. I have probably 30 lyrical songs that are untouched by music at this point. I guess I'm like BackwoodSquatches... a singer with guitar skills.

Good luck Utopio, i had no idea. :D

I used to play (when i was slightly smaller), the piano-one year, the viola-three years, the trumpet-two years, and the ever so original recorder. Now, i play the guitar and sing to my heart's content however, i wish i was a wizz on the piano. Infact i'm at school just now - whilst in chorale practise i worked out on the piano that really cool tinkery, slightly freaky tune from the Exorcist. I think it is also on Blockbuster ads in Britain. Pissing about is so much fun!

Quite versatile, there...

Versatile in LYING!
I can give the benefit of the doubt, he really is only listing 3 1/2 systems-
most brass players can play many brass instruments, plucked and bowed stringed instrumentalists the same. The other is keyboard system, so if you've played long enough you eventually learn keyboards.

It really depends if he's talking mountain dulcimer (plucked) or hammer dulcimer.

mountain dulcimer is easy, I think I learned to play it in about 20 minutes. Hammered dulcimer is more difficult.

Have you seen John play his solo for that song? His playing hand (can you tell i'm not a guitarist/bassist? "playing hand" - hah! )is all... CrAzY.

As for me, flute for grades 5-9 (first chair except freshman year when i had a really crappy audition and the instructor didn't exactly like me since i a)didn't practice (like i needed to - hah!) b)didn't get private lessons from her like the girl that ended up getting 1st did

a year later, and i feel a little something tug at my heart (since when am i so sentimental?) during every pep assembly. i still get my flute out on occasion, but just for fun.

also: band camp consists of marching drills and learning songs for football games. that's it. really. even if you play the flute. really. STOP LOOKING AT ME!!

I'm so happy 'cause today
I've found my friends...
They're in my head
I'm so ugly, but that's okay, 'cause so are you ...
We broke our mirrors
Sunday morning is everyday for all I car ...
And I'm not scared
Light my candles, in a daze
'Cause I've found god!

Yeah, yeah!!!

I'm so lonely, that's ok I shaved my head ...
And I'm not sad
And just maybe I'm to blame for all I've heard ...
and I'm not sure
I'm so excited, I can't wait to meet you there ...
But I don't care
I'm so horny, but that's okay ...
My will is good!

Yeah, yeah!

I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I'll kill you - I'm not gonna crack
I like it - I'm not gonna crack
I miss you - I'm not gonna crack
I love you - I'm not gonna crack
I'll kill you - I'm not gonna crack

my rock song:

Come all ye lads and you will hear
About the life that we love dear,

Refrain: With our diddle-air-re-oh, falling rock away, knock it down,
Fall-di-knock-a-rock-away, me laddie-oh!

Geologists all bold and strong,
We are the subject of this song.

We get up with the rising sun
And map until the day is done.

We walk two hundred miles a day,
And study rocks along the way.

We fight our way through brush and trees
And slog through bog up to our knees.

When flies are thick, then we don't walk,
They carry us from rock to rock.

We swing our hammers with a whack,
Take home an outcrop on our backs.

Nine hundred pounds of rock or more
Is just an average daily score.

If we run out of food to eat
There's always rock beneath our feet.

There's nothing quite like granite stew
'Though graptolites are some good, too.

In the evening to the clubs we flock,
To drink Dominion and Old Stock.

Here's to your health and our health, too,
May your life prove as good to you,

You've seen life through distorted eyes
You know you had to learn
The execution of your mind
You really had to turn
The race is run the book is read
The end begins to show
The truth is out, the lies are old
But you don't want to know

Nobody will ever let you know
When you ask the reasons why
They just tell you that you're on your own
Fill your head all full of lies

The people who have crippled you
You want to see them burn
The gates of life have closed on you
And now there's just no return
You're wishing that the hands of doom
Could take your mind away
And you don't care if you don't see again
The light of day

Nobody will ever let you know
When you ask the reasons why
They just tell you that you're on your own
Fill your head all full of lies

Where can you run to
What more can you do
No more tomorrow
Life is killing you
Dreams turn to nightmares
Heaven turns to hell
Burned out confusion
Nothing more to tell

Everything around you
What's it coming to
God knows as your dog knows
Bog blast all of you
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Nothing more to do
Living just for dying
Dying just for you

Hello, all, this forum is interesting, much fun.

musical instruments, lets see...

violin (22 yrs)
cello ( 15 yrs)
viola (10 yrs)
classical guitar (15 yrs)
piano (8 yrs)
mandolin (12 yrs, not formally, but family-trained)
hammer dulcimer (10 yrs, also family-trained)

I would, err...kill for an upright bass. I love bass. No takers on the souls-for-bass program, yet...

I wish I could play oboe, or english horn. I have tremendous respect or the double-reed players among us.

I also wish I played the bellows, or bagpipes...or had access to either. I have a 8-track recorder, either would be most helpful for the music I write.

Guitar - 33 years, Pro, Semi-Pro...
Bass - 20 years
Banjo - 15 years
Mandolin - 10 years

Keyboards and Midi drums (program only...I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time, much less hold a back beat)

Violin/Fiddle - just enough to annoy my dog...

Lately, I just play the radio.

Play us a rock tune - we may let you in the gang

*Turns the station to hard rock and air guitars to some RUSH* :D

If you really wanna be blown away by a power chord, find a drum & bugle corps.

BTW--Neal Peart was an Objectivist, and also marched in a drum & bugle corps!

I played the trombone in middle school, but I was extremely bad. I can't say I was ever good at music.

I knew you'd like them! The above is there most famous lyric (probably). It's practically impossible to find cLOUDDEAD lyrics on the web, although I do know some favourites by heart:

Fuck 'em if they can't take a joke

I taught myself to survive a four story fall wearing a space suit and a dead Englishman's socks.

We seem to be sinking deeper into a vat of honey glaze. Shall we live, or shall we laminated ourselves into a standard appetizing position.

By the by, Infected Mushroom kick ass. Trippy shit.

They have the most sublimly beautiful lyrics imaginable. And they get better each time you hear it.

The rams crumpled horn, an empty turtle shell,
Sunset is an all-day process.
Sunset is an all-day process.

How amazingly, mind-bendingly clever and cool is that! Well it is to me at least.

1-2-3, now here's the beat:
I can count forty fat women in Spandex,
Powerwalking circles around me.
As I stare, at a deserted baseball field,
writing the words to this rap on the back of a printed e-mail folded twice. Hot. Dog.

Yes, that is the natural consequence of adhering to an incorrect ideology.

Just kidding :)

Although your ideology IS incorrect...

Hey! I play drums, bass, piano, guitar, voice, random percussion, other stuff.
I compose my own tunes and play everything, some strange alternate planes to be explored! Take a little adventure through my world!
