Yeah, I'm learning with a pick right now. I don't know why, I can't learn strings. I've tried bass a couple of times, but I can't get it. Same with guitar. I pick up other instruments no problem, but the strings elude me. Maybe I should try a violin....

It bothers me that people don't know that Simon & Garfunkle's "Bridge Over Troubled Water" was about herion and not god.. It bothers me that it seems no one got the fact that Jethro Tull's "Aqalung" is about a child molester and think it's a great song.. (It's a brialliant song, if you know what it's really about, which few do)

I'm a big fan of classic rock. To me rock has really just gone downhill since 1979. It's too bad, because it doesn't give me much hope, since I wasn't alive to see any of the bands that I really would love to see, like the Doors, the Who (the real Who), Led Zepplin, or Pink Floyd. It just hasn't been like the 60s and the 70s. Bands these days don't even know how to handle their guitars, it seems. It troubles me that people these day parade bands like Linkin Park around as if they're the greatest band in history, and they don't even know their own musical history.

A case in point:
Last semester, in my dorm, one of the kids down the hall was blasting his music, and my roommate came in and complained about the crappy music he was playing. He was playing Led Zepplin. When I asked him what crappy music he was referring to, my roommate said, "That shitty 80s music they're playing."

I'm a musician, so I feel the moment all the time.. music to me is like religion to Ray..lol It's like breathing in and out.... :wink:

The problem is that the culture of the day doesn't have any reason to create truly meaningful music. I mean, why write inspiring, meaningful songs when you can pump out corporate-friendly pseudo-rock and make millions? I love my music, but if I were given an opportunity to not have to worry about financial problems the rest of my life in exchange for selling out on my ideals, I'd have to think long and hard about it. Musicians in the 60s and the 70s weren't going to be making millions either way, so they were more inclined to create more meaningful music.

You're exactly right about Led Zepplin too. Together with Black Sabbath, they are the founders of everything we consider rock these days. People don't recognize the influence of bands like them in everything we listen to.

But as for pre-dating..both of their first albums were released in the U.K in 1969.

I believe that "Black Sabbath" was about a month earlier.

But Zeppelin took off faster in popularity faster than Sabbath....and had their album released in the states in '70.

Both of these bands are what I consider to be the progenitors of modern metal...but Sabbath probably more so..thier music was heavier than Zepp's
Zepp were more Blues oriented.

I have discovered, much to my own amazement, that all of my platonic friends are listening to Opera-esque Speed metal. A genre I've lacked in, for reasons due to mostly of having little, if any, exposure to it, save the Christian Speed Metal band Tourniquet ("Tomb of Gilgamesh" is the greatest Christian Rock song EVER). There is ALWAYS good music coming out that you've yet to hear. Sometimes you just need to cross the sea or international boundries to find it. You can't trust record companies because they're only willing to make money. They waste money on rehashing the same shit every year (Remember when Mariah Carey was signed for $89M, just to be paid another $20M to leave because her music is so shitty?), and move onto fads that, are unfortunately, circular. Anyway, I got off on a tangent there. Nightwish and Rhapsody are some...interesting bands. As said before, Opera-esque speed metal. It's really interesting, and pretty much turned my head around on how I view these girls who listen to that stuff. I could get to like it easily.

Underground stuff is good sometimes. Though I personally don't care much for meat that's too raw. I like mine medium well. I can't find myself *not* to like "East Hastings" by Godspeed You Black Emporer, a band localized in Montréal. This 18 minute long symphony of guitar, percussion, and a string quartet not only has the perfect setting on: creepy, but also speeds up to a climax that is, in many ways, better than sex.

Across the Atlantic, Black Metal, which WAS invented there (In Norway of all places, let no one tell you different), is just resurging with new talent from across the nations. Even Scandinania's got some new talent with Arch Enemy, a Metal Band that has such promise from Sweden, I can forgive them for ABBA (I hate ABBA..I really do. Ace of Base was pushing it..). In Italy, Lacuna Coil is showing great talent with their release of Comalies. The great thing about these two metal bands: They're headed by female vocalists (something metal doesn't have much of since the days of Opeth [Not counting Kitty or Hole...bleh]; nu-metal shit). Rammstein is still enjoyed in a majority of Germany, and for those in the know, the Austrian Metal Band Ecstatic Fear is one of the greatest things to ever happen to the genre. Therion, Marduk, Stormlord...I could go on and on about the wonders of Metal.

Now, let's go to Asia! Yes, Japan and South Korea are major producers of music that are not only heavily influenced by Western (American) musical tastes, but, like is the custom of the asian culture, refurbishes it, makes it better, and tolerable once more. Japan is in a major cycle with blends of Teen Idol Bands (That actually do write and play their own instruments and songs. A girl named Tomoko, who is still in her young 20's, has two bands, writes and plays for both, and produces for both, as well as produces for a band she created from four sisters, all while being a mother to her child. How's that for responsibility!? It's not half-bad either. I can recommend Tommy Heavely6, Tommy February6, or Tommy Angels; all her stuff), such as Yellow Generation, Zone, Flow, BoA, an international hottie. As well as having a good punk following, with bands like the Pillows, Asian Kung-fu Generation ("Kimi to iu Hana" <-- Get this now), and Jazz is still Mainstream Japanese. Yoko Kanno isn't the only one, as a female duet known as "Natural high" are topping the charts with their LP "Love." It's very catchy. But, did you know that the Japan and South Korea can rock? No shit! They can! Hyde, from the band l'arc en ciel, which was a spring-off from Malice Mizer (those in the know, know), which was one of the hardest J-Rock bands in existence (as well as the most theatrical), has gone solo. Hyde is renowned in Japan for have worked with Gackt, which is equivalent to the pretty much the musical midas. Gackt is one of Japan's greatest musical artists (hence why he only needs to go by Gackt). Hyde already has two singles out "Hello" and "Horizon." I strongly recommend both. The Uncoloured are also going pretty well with their self-titled release, and Seo Taiji, a very famous celebrity in South Korea, has hit #2 on the South Korean Charts with "Robot," and it's going up.

If you can get your hands on a credit card, or can find anyway to listen to these singles, I strongly recommend you do so. Not understanding the lyrics can sometimes be a good thing, as it allows you to appreciate the music more.

Really? I personally think their kind of fast paced, in your face, rebellious rock had to have been a driving influence in the early punk bands like the Clash, the Ramones, and the Sex Pistols.

I'm a big fan of anyhting before the 80s. Except ACDC. And for the 1800s... that was a bad century. Today, things are starting to improve again, though I think we're still recovering from teh hellhole of the 80s.
