Let's try and figure out the ways we Americans get fat...
1. We are really 175 lb, but think we're really 250 lb.
2. SUPERSIZE THAT CHEESEBURGER!
3. Genetics
4. Craving (unintentional cravings)
5. Intentional craving
6. Stress
7. Boredom
8. Distraction from habit
9. Habit
10. Joy
11. Lack of excercise
12. Low metabolism
13. Unbalanced diet
14. Poor prenatal/maternal health
15. Too much time on their hands
16. Too much food to go around
17. Just plain lazy
18. Abusing automobile useage
Keep it coming people. I didn't even know people could get fat with just 17 reasons, but I'm sure there's a lot more!
Hopefully this'll get rid of the whole "super size" issue that everyone around here brings up...

Lack of exercise.
Sadly, most of this nation's problems with obesity would be solved if people just ran 20 minutes, 3 times a week.

That's a few off the top of my head...anyone care to help me add on to this list? You forgot two obvious ones... Low Metabolism, and lack of exercise.

It's true. I forget where, but I was reading an article about the issue and it said that something like 75% of the people who are considered overweight are only overweight by 1-20 lbs. If those people just got a little cardiovascular exercise, like I said, 20 minutes 3 times a week, they wouldn't be over weight in a few months. It's just an overall apathetic attitude towards health in this country that is causing these problems. No one gives a damn that they're out of shape.

Actually, it's the wrong people that are worried. All those teens are getting anorexic and bulemic and they're not even overweight...

that goes under lack of exercise pal...sorry  I am SUCH a polite guy
1. Lack of exercize
2. Stress
3. Severly unbalanced diet
4. Poor prenatal/maternal health caused by above three factors.
That about sums it up in that order. Number four is especially interesting, as you can suffer severe health problems even if you treat your body well, depending on your mother's health while carrying you. This problem takes one generation to foul up, and perhaps three to correct.

You're absolutely right. The people who should be self-conscious don't give a damn, and the people who have no reason to be self-conscious become obsessive.

added, nice job
We have a higher caloric intake than most other countries, and generally less physical activity. That pretty much sums it up.

What, just because the obesity problem even extends itself to even our poorest citizens?

Yes, my reasons sum it up. Even our poor have higher caloric intake and less physical activity than most other peoples of the world.
Just rolled off the couch to respond to this one. Had to move my healthy choice ice cream bucket out of the way...
1. Too much food.
2. Too much time on my hands.
3. Too much lard on my bum...
Pretty much sums it up to me.
man, most get fat cos they eat to much junk and they wont get off their fat butts to get rid off the extra kilos. And it is also partly cos they don't bother with jogging, lifting waits, less eating or even taking up sports!!That is my opinion anyway.......
I think that it's because junkfood is cheaper than its healty counterparts. Rye bread for example is more expensive than those white, bun-like sugary white bread pieces. Or that's what I heard...I ain't an american and I ain't fat. Long live compulsory military service, skiing and finnish food!

I eat very healthy but I eat larger portions than I should. And I like to sit more than I do excercise or work. Cars, fastfood, over eating, lack of excercise these are things americans need to fix. I'm currently working on it myself.

While some white breads are cheaper than whole wheat, the fact is that most of our dietary problems are rooted in restaurants, deep frying, and refined sugar.
It isn't the restaurants' fault. The healthy food simply doesn't sell as well as a greaseball. Even most healthy food in a restaurant is worse for you than a brown bag lunch or home cooked dinner. If you want healthy food, or you don't want to throw your money away, make your own. You can cut your food bill down significantly just by not going out to eat.
Deep frying is rather interesting. I had a female friend who was gaining weight as her metabolism dropped out from under her during her late twenties. By eating normally except not ordering or eating deep fried potatoes (french fries, wedges, curlies, etc), she stopped gaining and slowly lost weight.
Refined sugar in small amounts is fine. However too much of anything can be bad. While soft drinks do have disgusting amounts of sugar in them, washing a candy bar and a few cookies down with a diet soda doesn't wash.

Lack of exercise and unhealthy eating habits pretty much sums it up. Exercise would eliminate the factors of stress, boredom, low metabolism, and more. Eating a more healthy diet would help eliminate cravings and such. But exercise is the most important part. A little over a year ago I was in the Marines and we were doing winter training in northern Japan. We were consuming over 4,000 calories a day and maintaining or actually losing weight.
Sadly most people try to lose weight through dieting and usually end up doing more harm than good. I suppose the culture hasn't helped much either. Some people with a healthy amount of fat think that they aren't skinny enough; while the "big is beautiful" crowd actually revel in the fact that they're obese.
Exercise, the deceptively simple solution.

1) The combination of carbs and protien -- they can be counteractive to their supposed health merit
2) protein can have a lot of fat and cholesterol...
3) Too many "easy" solutions which fail
4) Mothers overfeeding their children

eating crap food. Candy, soda other junk. Not enough activity outdoors etc. and bad eating. I eat two to three healthy meals drink little or no soda (max of 1 a week usaully not even that) and eat no junk like hostess or candybars. Mix this with an hour or more of excercise (easy) and well there ya go you should be fine. I excercise and spend more than half my day outdoors about all week I also transport mostly by bike riding and walking if its short distance (otherwise I use the f350) LAzy people drive everywhere even if its like 1 mile or so away

Haven't seen that shit is years, I thought it was gone.
1) The combination of carbs and protien -- they can be counteractive to their supposed health merit
In fact, you do have to have both to survive. Glucose from carbohydrates is the bodies number one source of energy. (granted, your body will break down fat and protein in the absence of carbs, but eventually you need to have carbs again, because too much fat is not good for you- it deposits in your arteries and such.)
2) protein can have a lot of fat and cholesterol...
Geeeze...are you even listening to what you are saying? Protein is one type of organic molecules. Fat is another. Cholesterol is in a subset of fat (steroids, specifically). Therefore, protein cannot have fat or cholesterol. Perhaps you mean to be saying steak instead of protein....

-Messy foods that require you to eat them fast.
-No time to do anything, (apparently...)
-Computers and other forms of entertainment that don't involve standing.
-Midnight snacks
-Surplus of food
