10 Black Sabbath - Iron Man
9 Death - Open Casket
8 Judas Priest - Breakin' The Law
7 Motorhead - Ace of Spades
6 Cannibal Corpse - Hammer Smashed Face
5 Venom - Black Metal
4 Megadeth - Peace Sells, But Who's Buying?
3 Metallica - The Thing That Should Not Be
2 Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills
1 Slayer - Post-Mortem

Hair metal was ignored due to it's universal suckage.

Oooohh, Iron man! :o

I would change the Judas Priest tune to Metal Meltdown, Megadeth's to Symphony of destruction and Metallica's to Master of Puppets or Battery. Run to the Hill, Ace of Spades and Iron man stays. I haven't listened much to Slayer, Venom, Death and Cannibal Corpse, so I'll throw in:

Agony - The first defiance
Machine Head - Imperium
Tool - Hooker with a Penis
Ministry - Thieves
and what the hell, Suicidal tendencies - Monopoly on Sorrow

Ministry and Tool can't really be included because they are too closely tied to alternative/college rock. Machine Head I'd say is nu metal, and nu metal isn't a type of metal. Suicidal Tendencies are too punk to really make the list, I was iffy about Motorhead being on the list even.

Master of Puppets is a good song, and perhaps should of made the list, but I had to go with The Thing That Should Not Be, it's guitar solo is so amazing.

Angel of Death was also considered for the #1 song.

PS: I plan on doing one of these for American Punk, British Punk, Hardcore/Emo, Gothic/Industrial and Alternative.

Iron Man is one of sabbath's worst songs...Sabbath is my all-time favorite band..trust me on this.

Death.....who the hell is death, and why do they have such a cliche name?

Breakin' the law is not one of Preists best ones either.

Same for Ace of Spades

In fact, you seem to have chosen just about every typically generic song for each of your choices of bands, with the exception of Metallica.

Man...do a little listening..you'll find theat the best stuff from each of these guys..is stuff that most people have never heard.

I intentionally picked defining songs by each bands. If you have to pick one song by a band it should be one that showcases what they usually sounds like, but the best of the "typical" songs. Also, alot of the songs were chosen for being turning point songs in their careers, or just for being personal favorites. Like Iron Man is the song people think of when they hear "Black Sabbath", usually.

The cliché Slayer would of been Angel of Death or Raining Blood. The cliche Megadeth would of been Symphony of Destruction.

Death got on for being the first death metal band, this being what I consider the best of their early material. This early material was what launched death metal of course.

Without Death(and Morbid Angel) there would be no Cannibal Corpse or Mortician or Deicide or any other bands in that style.

Breaking the Law gets on for having the cheesiest video ever.

Do a little listening? I've listened to metal since I was 11, I've heard enough of it I feel I can debate it.

See, I feel that to say.."the best ten metal songs" is not.."the ten songs that everyone knows by the following artists."

Most of the examples you use, are generic , lite choices.

The best of each of thse bands*, are the ones that never made MTV, or the radio.

*With the exception of Death...never heard of em.

Generic, but the biggest single they've had. Exceptions being Run to The Hills and Ace of Spades.

Like I've already named bigger songs by some of the bands. Post your list, that will help the debate much more then us arguing over whether I picked the best or the most generic songs by each band.

Well, I ain't too picky when it comes to cathegories, although I knew that people would complain about at least Ministry. I was thinking about Halloween and all the fun music from the 80s and suddenly remembered Suicidal tendencies and I just had to throw them in as a reminder. :D I wouldn't call ST punk though.

Valiant attempt, but ultimately redundant. It's too subjective a thing. Everyone thinks they know metal and they think they're right. Except BackwoodsSquatty or whatever his name is. If you haven't heard of Death then you haven't been listening to metal, which invalidates your opinion. :P

Here's 10 from me:
1. Merciless Death - Dark Angel
2. Fabulous Disaster - Exodus
3. Desecrator - Exhorder
4. Slowly We Rot - Obituary
5. Ye Entraceperium - Emperor
6. World War III and IV - Carnivore
7. Satan's Trampoline - Lawnmower Deth
8. Walking Corpse - Brutal Truth
9. Dead Shall Rise - Terrorizer
10. Maze Of Torment - Morbid Angel

Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably put forward 10 totally different songs.

Krig: Gorgoroth.
Nectar: Opeth
Lucifer over London: Rotting Christ.
Where Silent Gods Stand Guard: Amon Amarth.

My favourite songs change daily...Though I've listed black metal, I like Blind Guardian, though thats it. I have my own Black Metal band after all :D

You're making a bigger fool of yourself every time you comment. Death were only one of the most influential metal bands of all time. If you were a fan of metal, you would have heard of them. Follow the link and learn.

That's a big call I'd never make. What I liked most about Cynic, Death and particularly Atheist, was that no matter how complex things got, they were always easy to listen to,unlike say Atrocity or Meshuggah.

Yeah, it's a mighty big call...though I have a friend (a drummer) who'd make just that. Though he's a HUGE Atheist fan, so he's biased.

I'd also have to agree to that- despite how technical the bands are, they're very easy to listen to. No pointless meandering. I especially like how Atheist can make all those sonic changes in one song AND keep it together- now is that songwriting or what?

Death, the band, was easily more influential than Sepultura, and probably Megadeth as well. They released their first album in '87, but were around for 3 or 4 years before that, releasing demos and whatnot.

Anyway, here's my list, in no particular order:

Motorhead - "Motorhead"
Metallica - "Dyers' Eve" (although I like "The Unforgiven" slightly more, Dyers' Eve is more metal.)
Napalm Death - "Suffer the Children"
Death - "Spirit Crusher"
The Plasmatics - "Stop" (from their Coup d'Etat album, which was years ahead of its time (a cliche, but true in this case). And Wendy O. Williams' vocals are gruffer than most male vocals)
Slayer - "Seasons in the Abyss"
Cradle of Filth - "Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids"
Iron Maiden - "Powerslave"
Judas Priest - "Painkiller"
My Dying Bride - "Sear Me"

Honorable Mention - Celtic Frost - "Into the Crypts of Rays"

P.S. Gore-metal sucks, except for early Carcass and Death, and that's only because their later stuff is so fantastic.

Due to my small music collection etc I will list my favourite artists and either an album or a song. This is in no way to interpreted as a "Top 10 List Of All Time" list, just a personal list.

Fear Factory - Demanufacture/ Soul Of A New Machine (Archetype might make this list but thats still a maybe)

Zyklon - World ov Worms

...And Oceans - AMGOD

Opeth - Black Rose Immortal and a lot of their other songs but this one is particularly memerable to me.

DEATH - Scream Bloody Gore (I am still yet to hear the rest of their work)

At The Gates - Slaughter Of The Soul (although With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness is a better album, I like this one more)

Vintersorg - ESP Mirage, one of many great tracks

Strapping Young Lad - Heavy As A Really Heavy Thing

Borknagar - Empircism

Sepulture - Chaos A.D.

Hmmm.

Im finding it odd that Ive never heard of Death.
Ive been listening to metal ( and many other kinds of music ) since I was 13, and Ive been a musician since i was 16.

Can anyone tell me when thier albums became available in the U.S, or in the Northeast part of the country?

Ive heard just about every other band mentioned here, or at the very least, heard OF them....

But not many people my age in my area know about these guys.

It's just over 2 years since Chuck died, sadly. I think it was Relativity released the first few albums in the States, the UK got em on Under One Flag, they then moved to Roadrunner. (Back in the days when 1/2 Roadrunners roster featured death metal bands ending in -ion.)

OK, being nice now...

I dunno if Scream Bloody Gore has ever actually had a major label release. It was originally released in 1987. There's quite a difference between it and Leprosy, released just a year later. Spiritual Healing (1990) tried very hard to be Leprosy Part 2, but came across a bit dry. I've never heard Human (1991) for some reason. Individual Thought Patterns (1993), Symbolic (1995) and The Sound Of Perseverence (1998) are all brilliant slabs of technical death metal, but never lose their listenability.

Hey, gotta put this out there....

One of the most underrated metal bands of all time, "Iced Earth". Their song "Dante's Inferno" is a good demonstration of what makes them rock. This song is long, first off, packed with shifting melodies, harmonies, and rythms that come and go and come again, forming a complete entity. It builds from quiet to loud and back and back again, rising into the eventual explosion of the 9th Circle of Hell... not only is it good music, but it's SMART music, based off of (and accurate to) The Divine Comedy, by Dante, from the 5th Century.

This band knows their shit, and makes great music, but most people don't know them. Just putting the name out there. They'd definately be on my list of Great Bands.
