I’d have to say Nirvana. They helped create a new genre, had well-written songs, and could be more hard-core without shouting. Metallica by contrast was just another hard-rock band, who happened to be harder than the rest and made it big.

Metallica generally suck, especially nowadays, but they had a passel of good songs. Nirvana absolutely suck, hardcore. So I guess my vote goes for Metallica.

What? Nirvana didn't invent anything.
Grunge predates Nirvana by at least a few years. Mudhoney, The Melvins and Sonic Youth all started before Nirvana.
Metallica, along with Slayer and several other bands were the bands responsible for speed metal.
Either way I like them both about them same, slightly.

Metallica,
They changed the face of heavy metal.
They did it without making a video for four albums.
Nirvanna, is a bunch of whinning no talent hacks.
Unfortunately everything Metallica did after ...And Justice for All, blew and blew hard.
They started catering to the weak kneed soft-bellied masses of eMpTyV.
Hokey nevou-trash rockabilly-alternative shite.
But ...And Justice and on back were trend setting work, i rate there early stuff with the likes of Sabbath.
Nirvana didn't *start* grunge. They just made it popular.

I never said they started it, I just said that they helped create it (or more accurately, heavily influenced it). Nirvana really helped spearhead the Grune genre. Without them, it's doubtful it would have become as big as it did.

I agree with you, except for the underlined part. Which is why I put Metallica.
Nirvana is fairly talented as a band. Yes, most of their songs share a common sound and it's a little repetitive, but Kurt Cobain is a very good songwriter. And good lyrics are, at times, almost as important as the instruments themselves. Which, like I said, were decent.

yes its true, those other bands were around before, but grunge wasn't really a big thing. It became the main thing after Nevermind.
Grunge never should of been made popular.
Popularity kills underground music.
Look at punk, which was pretty much dead by 1979, although it did manage to reinvent itself(street punk, crust punk, hardcore).
Hardcore burned itself out as it was becoming popular(1982) and fractured into thrash, emo, grunge and second wave hardcore.
Grunge became mainstream, refused to co-operate. This of course ment the labels let it die. But because it was too popular it could never go underground again.
Emo died(1995-2000, with the break up of At The Drive In) and MTV parades it's dead corpse around as some sort of acoustic guitar playing boys whining about girls.
Metalcore is soon to face the mainstream it seems, as kids come out of numetal looking for something less silly looking, but just as aggressive.
Metalcore RIP 2004.
PS: That really started to make no sense to me. :?
PPS: I figured it out. :)
Underground music needs to die before breaking through if it wants any chance of surviving in any form.
Neither would top my lists for bands but because....well, just because. Might as well get into the swing of things.
Nirvana:
Well I dunno what the rest of the band are doing but Dave Grohl's done pretty well, what with the foo fighters (bit bland but they knock out a toe tapping tune) and being a sometime drummer for Queen's Of The Stoneage, AND if my eyes didnt decieve me, was drumming in some new band with Lemmy from Motorhead.
Metallica:
Well, they're all about a million years old which, unless you are Lemmy, just isn't something to be proud of in rock. This is a byproduct of no one blowing their heads off at a young age. Bad show lads. Lars is a crap name. Their current nu metal imitation is embarrassing and rubbish. Their crass mishandling of the napster affair is a bit of a mark against them, and I only like one of their albums.
Therefore the winner is Iggy and The Stooges, without whom neither would exist and honourable mention must go to Napalm death because no one else ever mentions them and its not fair.

Really hard to say.
I like both bands quite a bit.
I used to hate Nirvana but, once I matured a little thier music grew on me.
Some of you might disagree with the following statement, and some of you wont be smart enough to understand it, but Metallica had very much the same kind of Influence on music as the Beatles.
Metallica of , course, never even remotely came near the Beatles popularity however.
It's like this.
Every once in a while an album comes out that revolutionises the genre its in.
In 1967, the Beatles produced, "Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band."
It was unlike anything anyone had ever done.
It completely turned Rock n Roll on its ear.
Metallica did the same with "Master of Puppets."
Absolute genius in the heavy metal catagory.
Probably the bands opus.
Come to think of it....."Smells like Teen Spirit" could be said to have done the same thing for Grunge.
Im not saying that these are the best albums ever....but maybe you get the idea of what Im getting at.
I hold Black Sabbath in higher regard.
They invented heavy metal.

Those two are in my list of the best metal albums of the 80's...perhaps all time.

DEP are just weird math stuff with emo influenced(ie: high pitched screaming) vocals. They aren't emoie sounding, just straight mathcore.

I don't want to make quote stacks but the ones above outline the core difference in the bands. Cobain's suicide prevented Nirvana from making the downward 'part it's time' slide that metallica did. If Metallica had stopped as early there would never be the loss of dignity like garage inc, or S&M and the arguement would be a lot more balanced.
Not making excuses for Cobain pussing out or anything.
Nirvana had a social impact that Metallica couldn't match, which became anthem. Metallica made thier impact through the fans, however, rather than being sold by the 'machine,' which certainly deserves recognition.
These bands are so different they shouldn't be compared. It's like comparing metallica to N'synch. Completely different.

Neither. I think that both are crap and their music is rubbish, IMO. They are not my thing at all.
The following are just opinions, so don't BBQ my butt, OK?
Nirvana: "In Bloom" is the only song I can listen to without throwing up. Seriously. But you got to give credit to them: They, and the grunge-genre killed off the late-80's/early-90's "hair metal" bands like Wild Boyz, Tuffz Enuff, ad nauseum.
Metallica: Don't talk to me about "St. Anger", "Load", "Re-Load", or the "Black Album". In my own little strange world Metallica's been retired since Cliff Burtons untimely demise.
But which one would I choose? Neither.
Gimme some Classic Van Halen, and I'll be happy. 8)

Metallica, for no other reason than they have always done their best to make each album sound different. I haven't listened to much Nirvana, but I find that other than one or two songs, the underlying tunes are more or less the same.
Ok, so I'll admit Metallica have lost it with "St. Anger". I struggle to think of a single track that really jumps out at me and gets me going.
However, I'm not going to complain. June 6th, I'm going to see them live at Donnington festival. w00t.

I chose Metallica, if for the sheer variety of songs and the lyrics held within.
I never liked Nirvana. I could never understand half the things Kurt sang. The music was redundant, the mood generally all the same. Metallica had variety, and variety, my fellows, is what's really important.
Though personally I hate both of them. I go for Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, or maybe some of the /really/ old stuff.
Like..if I want original punk, I listen to the Violent Femmes. Top that. Nyah.

I had to vote Nirvana just because the lyrics are so lucid... mind you, if it wasn't for the heroin, I don't think he'd have written such strange things.
But I love Metallica too!
Marilyn Manson was my favourite up until the latest album. Maybe Twiggy leaving made an impact on the music.
I have noticed an influx in teenyboppers who've obviously outgrown Busted and now claim that their favourite song is "The Fight Song". They've probably never heard 1996 or Lunchbox.
