There's been a lot of talk, some from the mods/admins of this forum, that the word "Faggot" should henceforth be censored. It's already banned for a nation's name and posting in our civil headquarters. Personally, I think this is going way too far, and should be stopped. Next thing you know, they'll say you can't say the US president's name, because it refers to female hair of a private sort. Censorship has gone too far in today's society, and is spreading too quickly to this site.

It shouldn't be any more banned than any other ethnic, racial religious, or other type of slur; in other words, ban them all or don't ban any. I personally don't like the word and might ask that it be avoided within my own sovereign borders, but I guess it's a waste to keep people from using it, and it does create a number of interesting quandaries.

I would just as soon follow the South Park method, in which people are bleeped when they use the word unless they themselves are gay men (the people targeted by the word.) The same would apply to all other groups and all other ethnic, racial, religious, and other types of slurs...

It depends on its usage. Fantasan I believe you are taking way too far about censoring "Bush" (or any word that has both real and slang meaning). A bush is a shrub or small plant. There is president Bush. It all depends on intent basicly. Should the "N" word be banned?

In the real world, it's true that speech ultimately cannot be controlled by a government or governing body. If one wants to use any word, offensive or not, in his spoken speech, he may do so, and only the conscience and character of that individual will prevent him from using language that is offensive to others.

But here in the carefully watched world of Nation States, speech CAN be controlled. There IS a governing body that can censor offending language before it is broadcast, before hate is spread, before young minds are negatively influenced.

I have not seen a list, but I assume other words have already been banned from use on this site, and postings are routinely screened and deleted when they make use of these banned terms.

The "N" word, for example—once used freely and openly by purveyors of hatred, fear and bigotry—is now so widely disdained that to use it makes one a pariah. (Granted, some African-Americans have appropriated its use to render its negative meaning powerless, much in the way gays have appropriated "queer".) To place a posting in the forums containing the "N" word would at the very least get your posting edited, and perhaps get you banned from the game.

Maybe we shouldn't ban the "N" word or the "F" word, just those who would use them.
