Hehe, Why is it the jolt forums seem to contradict these terms? (at least in it's user-input categories.)
Generally, all people do here is argue. Which generally means people trolling, baiting and flaiming in no particular order. That is the way of things. I think jolt.co.uk's a little more attuned to that paticular reality... or maybe you just see something I don't!

ive only had a quick look about but is there a thread where one introduces oneself(god that sounded posh) to be polite?

There isn't really a thread for that...a good idea to introduce yourself, that is, if you're only interested in the General forum, is to create a thread about yourself, your political views, your likes/dislikes (keep it clean, heh), and other stuff. You're bound to find someone who has the same views as you. Good luck with that.

I have just one question, maybe it should be raised in Moderation.
Thread Hijacking: Appropiating a thread for a discussion totally unrelated to the original purpose of said thread.
Is it still thread-hijacking if you're the thread's author? For example, in the repeal "legalize prostitution" debate thread I started, there came a point after the voting was concluded that I was considering discussing general telegramming techniques and theories with the thread. Is that thread-hijacking? It wasn't on the topic at all and it would've continued for several posts. But I was the thread author, there was no other use for the thread and all parties were consenting (that I know of). A hijack?
Euroslavia
18-01-2005, 23:14
As long as you're the author, you control exactly where the discussion goes, so I wouldn't consider it a hijacking. A hijack is when someone, other than the author, changes the subject of what the original poster was trying to get across.

sorry if this is the wrong place to ask but i've only just started reading threads in this forum and it made me wonder: is it okay to voice absolutely any type of political view? what i'm on about is the right wing direction... is it okay to express racist/fascist/nazi views? to what extent? if so, i'll just have to deal with it i guess, i'd just like to know.

Hello, kids. Today I'm here to give you a few tips for avoiding forum fires.
1. Be Understanding.
-Sometimes people are joking or have not stated their position clearly. Take this into account when you feel like slamming someone for their posts. Carefully consider whether their current behavior is consistent with their past behavior, because an inconsistency may mean that they are joking or being unclear. Instead of jumping on them, ask them to clarify their position or ask them if they were joking.
2. Be Cool
-Whenever you feel like doing physical harm to another poster, it would be advisable to move away from your computer and do something else for a while so that you can come back and approach the situation more rationally. You can hit a punching bag, have a snack, do a small chore, or any number of other things.
3. Use Smilies
-The appropriate use of smilies is a very helpful tool in communicating your emotional state so that other posters do not take joke posts (or serious posts for that matter) as you being snarky. These smilies are probably not good to use in joke posts:
:mp5: :sniper: :gundge:
And, as always...

I would like to think that this is common sense - however time here in the forums would prove me wrong almost inexorably. I would also like to think that I maintain an air of diplomacy in my posts, when I do post in a politically or religiously motivated thread (which seem to be hotbeds for hard feelings.)
I would be wrong to assume that I always find my actions applicable of such dignity though. I am not, it seems, without my misgivings. We all make asses of ourselves at times.

I think the only modification is on which smilies are used. A fluffle or an actual smiling smiley doesn't iratate me in the slightest. Sniper, machine gun and especially the eyeroll smiley make me wish I could push a button that would make the sender's computer explode. I don't know how you'd word that...

Depending on which version of the origin you go by, I used to visit the actual Smokey the Bear as a child in my hometown's zoo (Folsom Zoo), where the badly burned bear was taken care of until his death in 1985. (Other accounts have the bear being from New Mexico, which I never knew until recently. I guess there is dispute over which bear inspired the fire spokesman.) All I know is I visited an actual bear that the placard told me was the Smokey. I know, placards can lie to little children. What a savage world we live in. Out of local pride I'll insist that ours was the one and true Smokey.
Folsom Zoo was and is a small (and I mean small zoo that housed injured and invalid animals that other facilities wouldn't. We had a lion with digestonal problems and would complain about the food he had to eat every morning, which for a kid growing up in rural/come-suburbs it was pretty kick ass to hear a lion roar every morning. I don't know if the lion is still there, I don't imagine he is. I got the hell out of that town as soon as I was able.
Sorry, hometown trivia, back to the topic at hand.

Interesting. I'd never heard the California story before. Both http://www.smokeybear.org/ and http://www.smokeybear.com/ back the NM story. So does the Forest Service (who created the campaign).
This is the only site I found crediting California (and they site both versions): http://www.kinderkorner.com/fire.html
The Folsom Zoo story looks like a local UL. Sorry to burst your bubble. :(
In 1944 The National Forest Service, in conjunction with the Advertising Council, originated and authorized a poster, by Rudolph Wendelin, of Smokey Bear as the symbol for fire prevention.
In May of 1950, a human-caused fire ravaged 17,000 acres of forest in the Capitan Gap. It was during this fire that a tiny bear cub found his way up a tree. With badly burned feet and buttocks, the cub clung tenaciously to the side of that pine tree until he was found by one of the fire crews who had been fighting the fire.
The cub was briefly named "Hotfoot" but those involved quickly called him Smokey Bear and he became the living symbol for the poster.
Little Smokey Bear was flown by Game Warden Ray Bell to a veterinary hospital in Santa Fe. Later, Bell kept Smokey Bear in his home during the recovery, but, as a wild animal...even a baby one...he dominated the family pets.
Once healed he was flown to the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. where he quickly became a "star" . In July of 1950, then U.S. Senator Chaves of New Mexico, presented Smokey Bear to the school children of America. By 1952, having become so popular with school children as well as citizens of the world, Congress passed into law a bill governing the commercialization of the name and image of Smokey Bear. It was at about this same time that Smokey Bear was given his own zip code because of the large amount of mail he was receiving.
but http://www.smokeybear.org/
Did you know the cartoon Smokey Bear is based upon an actual baby black bear that was found alone, charred, and scared after a devastating wildfire burned through New Mexico?
(full story at the link)
http://www.smokeybear.com/vault/story_main.asp
Located in South Central New Mexico, the Lincoln National Forest is known as the birthplace of the world-famous Smokey Bear, the living symbol of the campaign to prevent forest fires. The original bear is buried in Capitan, New Mexico.

Yeah. I'd only add something to the effect that many posters find the over use of any smilies obnoxious. And, correct me if I am wrong, but I believe smiley abuse is/was considered spam by the mods.

More or less my point exactly. We all make typos, and those should be a) overlooked and b) corrected by the poster.
Attacking someone for a single error in typing is bad form. However, posting material that is unreadable due to poor spelling and grammar is equally poor form.
