Mistake in JG?

To put this ahead: I never read the English version, I however did read the German version Logoland. My favorite scene is the exploit using the virus-scanner. However I noted one thing when reading the book yesterday: Violet was afraid that she had problems with the SUN OS in one scene. isn't this no longer existing and Solaris (now OpenSolaris) has taken its place?

A possible answer, though I can't swear to it -- JG came out in 2003. Is it possible that the software was renamed in the past three years?

In the early 1990s, Sun replaced SunOS 4 with a version of Unix System V Release 4, jointly developed with AT&T. This was marked by changing the marketing name of the operating system to Solaris 2; however, the term "SunOS" was still used to refer to the underlying operating system itself, and Solaris is considered to be the SunOS 5 operating system plus a graphical user environment, ONC+, and networking and other components.

See, I consider it weird that the marketing name is not used here.

Perhaps Max did it for irony purposes, if he wasn't using the marketing name.

Or maybe he just called it Sun rather than Solaris because that's what it was called when he was introduced to it.

I believe it's a translation issue. From my version (US hardcover 1st edition/1st printing; nyah)

Violet was the only tech in the group. She'd been briefed on the server they'd gain access to, but even so, she was no Solaris expert.

*stabs the translator*

That's the passage in German:

Violet war die einzige Technikerin in der Gruppe. Man hatte ihr den Server erklärt, zu dem sie sich Zugang verschaffen würden, aber sie war nun einmal keine Expertin in SUN-OS.

Hm. What's the OS called in Germany? Perhaps 'Solaris' doesn't translate very well.

or perhaps the translaters are just silly...
