Syrup: A Brief Review

When I first started playing this game, I found out that it was created to promote the book Jennifer Government. I picked it up immediately. Once I started reading it, I realized, "wow, this is really good!" I just couldn't' put it down. I recently read Syrup. It just completely blows away Jennifer Government. I literally read it, cover to cover, in a few hours. That's how good it was. It's just unbelievable. Although it's not an action book or a thriller, I just couldn't put it down. It's extremely gripping. Whether you liked Jennifer Government or not, you will love Syrup. I officially declare it the greatest book that I have ever read. Better than 1984, better than any Calvin and Hobbes, better than Tintin: Land of Black Gold, better than Brave New World, better than The Lord of The Rings.

Please, post your thoughts on Syrup below.

Ain't actually read it yet, looks good from my hole... shame I'm gonna have to import it though.

Curse there being no publishers releasing it in the UK.

Whoa, anything better than Calvin and Hobbes might be a little too good for me.

Syrup had way too much sex in it for my liking. It was a good idea and well-written, but I almost didn't read it after Six came along.

Which was about the 3rd or fourth chapter. And there isn't any sex really, only the suggestion of it.

True, but it was a lot more than anything I'd read. That and the fact that they end up sleeping in the same bed and stuff.

The book was very good, not just pretty good, but it was not my favorite. Perhaps another category would have been in order 2xJulian? Ahh well. . .

I felt kinda the same way. Suggestion, or actuallity, I'm still a bit of a prude. I got chewed out by Hack for letting a little thing like that tarnish my opinion of it, but it's true.

It was brilliant otherwise, although with the cover and the innuendo, I would have put it down for pulp fiction had I not read Jennifer Government first.

JG seems to be the exception to the rule though. While Max's non-fiction comments on his blogs are more like JG, if you got to see his preliminary JG screenplay, you'll see that Max seems to love sexual tension in his writing.

I suppose that it will draw the Reality TV crowd in though, even if the wit of it will be lost on them.

Didn't think I "chewed you out", but... well... water, bridge, etc.

if you got to see his preliminary JG screenplay I think you mean his Syrup screenplay. At any rate, I'm not surprized about the amount of sexual overtones in Syrup, after all: it's about marketing.

What sells? Sex.

A book dealing with people who are trying to sell stuff is going to have sex in it, as it's their lives. Would be like having a book about football players without any football. A movie, which needs visuals to convey narration, is going to have more sexual overtones. Personally, it reminded me of the old HBO show 'Dream On', but it'll be interesting to see the final draft. Movies change a lot.

Personally, I had a much more difficult time with the early scene between John and Violet while the other John was off with Hack in JG. It established him as a right bastard, but...

Bah, you're right Hack, sorry, about confusing them.
And, yes, sex does sell for many people.
I can't really argue with you, although I don't know if a virtually pornographic movie will attract the audience that Max wants to attract. I'd think that it would appeal more to brain-dead 20-something-year-olds than to people looking for a witty satire.
You really think he'll let us see the final draft, seeing as how they made him pull the initial one?
