What does the book have to do with the game anyway?

Max Barry made the game to promote the book, not the other way round.

What are the books about anyway?

Syrup

Scat wants to be rich, shallow, and famous, so when he gets a million-dollar idea for a new soda, he realizes it's his ticket to movie premieres and vacuous, drink-slurred lunches with celebrities. But first he has to deal with 6, a street-smart, miniskirt-wearing corporate assassin, who is possibly the love of Scat's life or possibly just ripping him off. Then there's Sneaky Pete, marketing genius, refugee from Tokyo, and Scat's best friend—at least as far as Scat knows.

The three books have got a lot of praise from critics.

Jennifer Government

Welcome to paradise! The world is run by American corporations (except for a few deluded holdouts like the French); taxes are illegal; employees take the last names of the companies they work for; the Police and the NRA are publicly-traded security firms; and the U.S. government only investigates crimes it can bill for.

Hack Nike is a Merchandising Officer who discovers an all-new way to sell sneakers. Buy Mitsui is a stockbroker with a death-wish. Billy NRA is finding out that life in a private army isn't all snappy uniforms and code names. And Jennifer Government, a legendary agent with a barcode tattoo, is the consumer watchdog from hell.
luv u sofi hb, hehe i'd thought i'd slip it in here
Company

At Zephyr Holdings, no one has ever seen the CEO. The beautiful receptionist is paid twice as much as anybody else, but does no apparent work. One of the sales reps uses relationship books as sales manuals, and another is on the warpath because somebody stole his donut.

In other words, it's an ordinary big company. Or at least, that's what everyone thinks, until fresh-faced employee Jones—too new to understand you just don't ask some questions—starts investigating.

Jones uncovers the company's secret: what Zephyr really does. It plunges him into a maelstrom of love, loyalty, management, and corporate immorality, and whether he can get out again... that's a good question.

The book is better than the game, so you know its good!!!

Sadly it is not likely that there will be a JG sequel for all of you that loved the book so much, just read his other two books!

It took Max roughly 5 years to write, so please read it. (http://www.maxbarry.com/jennifergovernment/)

The Movie

Yes there may well be a JG film!!! Watch this space and read the extract from the Max Chat.

Check out this (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0760314/The Movie) thread

<Neutered_Sputniks> Purgutoria, you have a question?
<TheSLAGLands> We'll take more questions on the Jolt issue later.
<Pergutoria> Max, can you tell us more about the Jennifer Government movie that's planned? It seems everyone's interested.
<MaxBarry> Sure
<MaxBarry> My agent sold the film rights to Jennifer Government just over 2 years ago now, to Section Eight Films
<MaxBarry> which is run by Steve Soderbergh and George Clooney
<MaxBarry> This obviously rocks :)
<Pergutoria> *nice*
<MaxBarry> The way it works is the film company buys an option, which means they have a period of time to try to get a film into production
<MaxBarry> They pay me a relatively small amount of money for the option, with the promise of a big payday if the movie actually gets made
<MaxBarry> Section 8 had 18 months, and a couple of months ago they renewed it for another 18 months
<MaxBarry> During all this time, they've essentially been developing the screenplay
<MaxBarry> I've actually lost track of how many writers they've been through
<MaxBarry> but it's a lot :)
<MaxBarry> They want to get the screenplay right before they take the next step of attaching directors, cast, etc
* Reploid_Productions thinks it would rock if the mods got small parts in the film =p
<MaxBarry> heheh
<TheSLAGLands> Cameos by Granny Slag!
* Melkor thinks it would rock too
<MaxBarry> So there's not really any major news, apart from that they're developing it
<Pergutoria> So, will NationStates players be considered for extras?
* Treznor doubts he could get Peter Winfield to play his part.
<Karmabaijan> Alright, thanks Pergutoria.
<MaxBarry> Sadly, no. :)
* Cogitation wouldn't mind trying his hand at acting.
<Melkor> ok next q

<MobileMyrth> Up next we have a question from 'Shaum'
<MobileMyrth> « Shaum » Any news on the possibility of a JG movie?
<MaxBarry> Yes, actually, it's been a big movie week...
<Sirocco> Shock horror, Shaum is not here.
<MaxBarry> Section 8, which is the film company owned by Soderbergh and Clooney that's developing the Jen Govt film, bought the rights about two and a half years ago...
<MaxBarry> But it's been slow going -- there are so many things that can slow a film's development down, and lots of them happened here.
<MaxBarry> Getting the right writers has been a big one. But Section 8 and Warner Bros. seem like they're finally about to actually land a deal with two excellent screenwriters, and I know they're serious because they just asked to extend the option.
<MaxBarry> The writers are the guys who wrote SEXY BEAST, which is an awesome British film.
<MobileMyrth> Someone call for a sexy beast?
<MaxBarry> So while the film is still a long way from the screens, it's getting some momentum up.
<MobileMyrth> :(
<Tactical_Grace> Haha!
* RepProdtheNinjaMod smacks Myrth upside the head with the Sword of DEAT
<Karma> Thanks Shaum-who-is-not-here!
* MaxBarry pats invisible Shaum.

Max has recently received the screenplay to Jennifer Government, so progress is coming.

Max has also sold the film rights to Company, so with any luck there may be another film!

Just wanted to pop in and say that I've read both Syrup and JG and I thought both were very good. It's scary: the whole "loyalty program" thing that's taken to extremes in JG is coming true--more and more companies are getting together to "entice" customers to stick with one or another product--buy a DVD, get a movie ticket to a certain theatre to see the sequel; the travel industry is totally integrated with the credit card industry; drink Sprite, get a movie rental at Blockbuster, etc....

I'm sure it won't get as bad as it does in JG, but it's still a worrying trend.

The book is amusing, and reads just like a screenplay.
Most of the new fall movies suck!
Let's prod George C. and get our movie out pronto!
Maybe Mel Gibson would produce it; he's rich and Australian...

I just read Jennifer Government.
It was a great read -- I could not put it down.
Max really touched a nerve -- I have Syrup on order

I concur with New Paristan above. Increasingly there are few options to opt-out of the corporate world's marketing schemes.

Though I most identified with JG in the book, Buy came a close second.
In my youth I quickly went the way of Hack Nike with advert billboard appropriations.

I am beginning to see the reverence some "defenders" (nations in NS who block invasions) have, in the spirit of JG.

It would be good to read the thread you guys mentioned awhile back of the linkage with NationStates and Jennifer Government.

I'd loved the book (JG)... it let's you see how screwed up capitialism can be... I just hope that the world does not fall into the condition this book allows you to see... I just hope the government gets better, so we don't have to see JG in real life... I mean there may be some up sides to this, but still... I'd rather deal with what government we have than see JG come true... It was a great book and I'm not normally into this type of read...

Well, I started playing nationstates about two months ago and was soon quickly enthralled in the politics as well as the hilarious issues that can be dealt with. Then I noted that it was based on a book, read the first chapter online and was vaguely interested.
Then, yesterday, out of the blue I find the book in the bookshop I work at - even though we're actually not meant to stock it - and I had a sudden urge of impulse buying. Got home and read the book to completion which took me six hours till 3am in the morning. What can I say, its a great book, humourus in some places whilst others sent me into hysterical laughter, I especially liked the part with the police station tannoy playing 'Every step you take'. The satirical view of the future of capitilism and globalisation of corporations is something that you can almost see now, extremely diluted though of course. Well, great book and now all I have to find is Syrup, its out there somewhere...

I have a very nice Max Barry book story.

Last year, around spring break I found out that I was getting into a great school (an Ivy in the US) just about the time I found and bought JG. I read it (straight through in one night) while I was subsequently visiting the school and am now happily settled there.

On one of my first forays into the main library (ostensibly to read some chemistry) I sat myself down on a comfortable chair, looked to my left, and promptly forgot all about my homework. Why? Max's Syrup was sitting right there on my left.

I spent the next ~4 hours reading the book until they kicked me out of the library at midnight. I didn't get to finish it right then, but it is well worth the read. I'm eagerly awaiting any other volumes Max has in the works...so far each of his works has found their way into an association with my school. Coincidence? Probably, but why ruin the magic?

Haha, yeah, that was my favourite bit too. I even have the quote (..."I have to, um, kill ten people.") written down in my "little book of literary quotes that are cool" book. Be proud, Max Barry! You are along such geniusness as Atwood, Nabokov and Murakami (maki *and* haruki, yo).

I have just finished reading the book. And I found it to be quite a good read. Maybe not as funny as the rest of you had, but I did enjoy it. I liked the corporate dealings, the government aspects, the various plots, the chapter names, as well as the various nam that the characters were given. I am, now, going to lend this to a friend. And, then, my mother.

I had joined nation states. Then after two weeks, I read the first chapter of JG. That got me hooked. It took me about two weeks of searching through two cities before I had found it. And, then, I had found it in a bookstore that is now closed due to the larger bookstores. What can I say, but a perfect example of the "Stationary Store" with the signs that read "Proudly Independent" and "Going out of Business Sale!"

And so, now, I want to hunt down Barry's second novel( Syrup) and read it. Though, the first chapter doesn't really look interesting to me.

long waitlist at the library for JG., so in the meantime, wouldn't it be kind of a nice touch if they had people in the background playing nationstates in a few scenes, it wouild surprise me if there wasn't some "walking past a row of cubicles" scene in the movie given the first chapter. if nothing else, it would give them some bit of trivia to mention on the DVD.

Funny thing happened to me today.

At the school I go to I got a temp job at the library for my classes work experience week. Today I discovered that the library had JG in its inventory, having not read the book despite the fact I have played NS for quite some time, I promptly borrowed the book out and spent my next break engrossed in the first three chapters. While I was knee-deep in this literary acheivement a full-time librarian walked past and noticed the title of the book and noted that it was brought in by the librarian I had been taking instructions from all morning, it turns out she is Max Barry's wife

Absolutely fantastic book. I couldn't put it down until I was done with it. Then I lent it to my teacher. I love how Max shared the 3rd Omniscient perspectives of each important character, but stuck to them during their own chapters as much as he could. It combined Tin Man and some otehr book I read a while ago that I can't remember. It had the feel of a Military-Adventure to it but it wasn't at the same time. Excellent writing, I plan on picking up Syrup as soon as Christmas comes around.

I'd have to agree... I very rarely read modern day books, as I think they've lost a lot of flair, and the classics are my favorite. However, Jennifer Government was just so radically different and the fact that it could happen in the future definitely added to me wanting to read it.

I read the first chapter to JG the other day, and I keep thinking about it, because I keep coming back to this damnable game and being reminded of it. I liked what I saw... for the most part. But one thing is bothering me. Nike would get the money from the stores they sold their shoes to, not from the individuals buying the shoes from the stores. Nike would not need to keep the demand up, because they'd already have their cash. Also, killing such a small number of people would not reduce the supply of shoes, nor keep the vast supply a secret. The whole basic idea for the first chapter is meaningless.

If it is explained later on in the book that Nike controls all the shoe stores, or something, that might make sense. But then, that should be explained in the first chapter, shouldn't it?

I'm leaning towards minor-to-medium-sized plothole.

Anyone know if there's a reading guide for this book anywhere? Several of my sorority sisters and I have a book club, but without fail only two or three of us have read the book. (So far the book club has been "So, did you hear what Jane has been doing since college?" kind of group.) I suggested this book, having heard good things and knowing it would be a quick and enjoyable read.

I've got the stuff from wikipedia. Any other suggestions?

The book can't be found in stores, at least not in Canada, but the library's Central branch had one.
It's a pretty good read. Surreal..people being named for their employers! That must cause some headaches down in Payroll..
I suppose if I lived in their world I'd be in NRA. Better than Nike, at least!
And the "marketing ploy" they use may very well have already happened IRL. I wouldn't put it past them.

We allow a wide range of freedoms here (much more than many online forums), why would we draw the line at Max's books? We're not egotistical enough to think that all six billion people in the world would enjoy them.

Well, yes, but you didn't write them, now did you? :D

Or did you? Max, is that you? ;)

Actually, I liked both books a lot. Jennifer Government reminded me a little of 1984, only, the other way around, and with a better sense of humour.

And I'm sort of an advertising guy, so Syrup is like my Bible. :) (Gasp! Blasphamy! Flame him in General!)

Something itself could be developed more and made the ultimate policital simulator. Hell I would buy it. :D

It's almost 23:00 in Germany. In front of me lies the book Jennifer Goverment. After reading the first chapter online I absolutely wanted to have it. (Indeed it made me think of 1984). In just a few minutes I will shut down the computer and read. Thank god I don't have to work tomorrow :-)

I love the author's note already :-)

Anyways...I'm thrilled to read the rest of the book :-)

I have just read JG, and don't get it. Everyone seems to be after money, which is only created (presumably) by governments. If there's a extranational central bank people are for some strange reason trusting, it isn't mentioned that I could find.

All the corporations and their alliances seem to think it's potentially in their monetary interest to declare Government irrelevant, but how can they do this without issuing their own scrip?

I had planned to spend my day revising chapter 4 of my novel. I just decided to take a quick peek at JG to see what it was like. Now it is 12:30 and I haven't edited a single word.

An excellent book with very visual writing. It is a real page turner with current trends amplified until they overload.

It might be worth adding a link to the IMDB page for Jennifer Government the movie to the first post. It claims the release date is in 2008, but we all know the movie industry is fickle.

Here's the link for all that are interested:

So yeah, after three years on NS, I picked up JG. I decided to read it over spring break, just to say that I did. So I sat out by the pool toda around noon, and cracked open the book...and around five this afternoon I was already half way through with my first re-read. Awsome book.

Personally, I haven't read Jennifer Government yet but I just ordered it on CD. Frankly I just don't have the time to really sit and read anything anymore.

Also, I run a show on Krush Radio Network called The Genocydal Empyre v2.0 which will air on www.worldrockradio.com tomorrow at 12am - 3am EST if you wanna check it out.

Frighteningly, this book, from it's synopsis, looks a lot like what I've been talking a lot about during the course of some of my shows.

After listening to the discs, I'll be submitting a review of the book and I'll be talkin about it on my show.

I like it. The book is essentially a SF/MT take on dystopia...Kinda reminded me of Swift's Gulliver's Travels. IF you read the synopsis or Cliffnotes of that book you would swear you were reading a review of some strange Role Playing on these NationState Forums.

I have a pet theory that says the little "faults" with the Game Design add in no small to the Parody of Real Life countries. People playing it seem to forget that they aren't really tin pot dictators and insane countries. It is really quite scary how many madmen are really out there! All of them trying to institute their own version of Jennifer Gov't. :p Heck, even I have a puppet that would seem to follow the "dark side"

This will probably be me the ever-pessimist, but is anyone else worried that people would see Jennifer Government as a rip-off of V for Vendetta? It would be like a rash of political-uprising movies, no matter which came first.

Personally, I didn't find V for Vendetta that exciting, and would rather see Jennifer Government made into a movie, but still. I'm just a tad concerned about the public opinion.

If anyone else has anything to add or say, go ahead. I might certainly be wrong.
The Most Glorious Hack
29-08-2006, 07:01
I don't think that's too much of a concern, especially since they're residing on such different ends of the scale. V was a totalitarian state. In JG, most of the world has nearly non-existant governments. V was laser focused in its plot, JG follows numerous (albeit connected) characters.

It'd be like saying A Perfect Storm ripped off Titanic, because they both involve ships sinking.

i caught the end of V for Vendetta, but it didn't seem that interesting .. Jennifer Government as a movie would be brillant though! there is so much action in the book, it would make for a great movie. maybe it is too soon for it to come out with V for Vendetta only recently being in theaters, but I do look forward to the day that Jennifer Government becomes a movie

Jennifer Government as a movie would be brilliant, depending on who was chosen to write the screenplay, the script, what actors were picked to play the various characters, who's chosen to direct, produce and so on.

There have been books that I've read that are outstanding, but as soon as they are turned movies, they lose anything that even remotely resembles good. Which is very, very disappointing.

I would very much like to see JG made into a movie, I just hope it doesn't get butchered in the process of doing so.

Terry Gilliam would be perfect for directing JG, in my opinion.

And an interesting thought about a Syrup movie. The book is essentially about the world of Coke, and a 2 hour commercial is made (I mean... movie)
Wouldn't Syrup essentially become a 2 hour Coke commercial?
