Some thoughts from a recent read of JG

Where does the Government get its money? I know they charge for some services, like investigating a crime. Where does the money for preventing crime come from? They don't charge for that, as far as I could tell?

Do they still own some of the infrastructure, like basic roads? Are there tolls for those? The only tolls I remember are for the privately-owned super premium roads.

I would think a popular form of insurance would be for violent crime. The insurance company would pay for investigation and prosecution in the event an insured was harmed. Then you wouldn't have to sell the house like Hayley's parents did.

What other new forms of insurance might be popular in the JG world?

Hmm, would they actually put money into preventing crime?

Well, they did. Remember they assigned field agents, Jennifer included, to stop the Nike killings. However, once the killings took place, they wouldn't followup unless someone paid.

On pg. 64 of the hardback, Jennifer says:

"The Government's budget only extends to preventing crime, not punishing it."

Well, perhaps there is a small tax that is paid, or they get it through tariffs?!

No, no taxes. That's mentioned several times. See Hayley's talk in front of the class. They don't mention tarifs that I recall.

While Government is a lot smaller, it still can put 20000 agents into the field when necessary.

If you look on the map, then there is tariffs on Europe....

The map points at the European Union and says, "Here be tariffs." I read that as the Europeans levy tariffs. It doesn't really say one way or the other whether the USA has tarrifs as well. If it does, why would the Government get the tariffs? Wouldn't they just go to the corporations that had to pay the tariffs on exports?

I see what you mean. Well, I have pointed out all possible reasons as to where they get their money...perhaps it is a question which we should ask Max.

They talk about "cheap roads" early on, so it's pretty clear that it isn't just the premium ones that are charged for. Also, Hack objects towards the end to the fact that transportation isn't free. I did wonder if some of it was nonetheless Government-controlled, but that doesn't sound like the sort of thing they'd do...

What is the map you speak of? I didn't see it in the paperback...
