I approached NationStates with a great deal of enthusiasm, enjoying the 'issues' that allowed me to clearly define my own political beliefs to myself. I recalled the book with the barcoded woman I had seen in Borders. I considered buying it, but for some reason or another put it off, and put it off a little more. During this time, I went through the run of 'issues' available in NationStates.

Frankly, that you claim to be unaware of any bias in NationStates is revolting. There is not a single, not one, issue that involves any religion except New Age in a positive tone. I have created several accounts and run them through every political variation. I have yet to see an issue with an option involving a religion not painted in a bad light.

I will get Jennifer Government from the library. Perhaps you should rethink bigotry.

I am interested by your statement, can you back up what you say with examples?

Actually (s)he has a point.

What about making an issue about having a national religion such as new age, Christian, Islam, etc. And have each one look good. That way each religion is shown is a postivie manner. And yes Alluvien you do have a very VERY good point.

Because not all of us want to have a national religion.

Whats wrong with the current issue that does just that?

I would not say there is any bigotry present. Religion not being shown in a good light (very different from being shown in a bad light) is hardly bigotry. I think you are getting a bit carried away here.

This entire game is tounge-in-cheek and exagerated. If you notice, pretty much all viewpoints are mocked mercilessly in this game. We are equal opportunity, everyone is made fun of.

I'm sorry that this bothers you, but please realize that none of this is done out of any bigotry or hatred.

Alluvien, I think you have a point.

I got an issue today about bringing back to life extinct animals - yet another stereotype of religous people was used. It makes out as if we are all mad, wacko, fundamentalist people when that is simply not true. To an extent I find it discriminating but then there are other things which are wrong on this site, in my opinion.

However, we have to remember that this is a private site, which is Max's, and what he thinks should be and should not be on here is up to him.

You do realise that business leaders, trade unionists, polygamists, the military, etc are also mercilessly mocked? Can anyone actually name a group which comes out of the issues smelling of roses?

Had you read the book instead of putting it off, you would all most likely gain a greater appreciation for the issues here in NationStates the game...just my 2 cents...

And the fact, as it says in the FAQ (I think it is the FAQ), that the issues are all slightly extreme in their outcomes etc.

Well he only gives you three choices in that issue. He can't have 12 differnet solutions to each issue that would be too complex. He gives three solutions and if you like one of them you can choose them or if you don't you can ignore the issue.

As the author of said dodo issue, I assure you that the religious option(which I believe was barely edited at all) in it is very much tounge in cheek indeed. As were the others. Of course religions are portrayed as fundamentalist whackos! EVERYONE in nationstates is cast as a fundamentalist whacko! It's a humerous game! I vote we name this thread the Official NationStates missing the point board.

Actually, New Age gets called a cult, so I wouldn't call that positive. Other than that, I agree with your comment, but you should realize that there aren't any issues depicting atheism in a positive tone, either. Or unionism. Or capitalism. Or socialism. Or anything else. NationStates isn't about pushing any particular political or religious viewpoint: it makes fun of them all. The game is basically about choosing from a series of bad options, each with drawbacks.

Alluvien, I think you have a point.

It makes out as if we are all mad, wacko, fundamentalist people when that is simply not true.

But most of the time it IS the radical crazies of any and every cause who speak out the most...so maybe the more sensible voices aren't shown....
meh.

So Max wants to sell copies of his allegoric book about unbridled capitalism to some hungry Ethiopians. Great idea! :D

"What did you bring home?"
"Sorry dear, they were all out of food but with our life's savings I managed to get a copy of this book. I hear it's quite a good read."
"We can't read."
"Right, let's cook it then. Paper contains fibers too, doesn't it?"

If he sells enough copies, we may not need to pay for NS 2 !

I'm currently reading the book, and the only religion that has been mentioned at all is the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, aka; Mormons. That said, they have not been portrayed in an unsympathetic light (so far anyway). Maybe the author is LDS?
15-10-2003, 11:58
Personally, I'm surprised the Scientologists weren't mentioned in the book!

they're extreme whackos to begin with, seems they'd be perfect for the world of JG ;)

At the end of a sequel Violet is so stressed by everything that she just gives everything up and joins the Harri Khrisnas and becomes "Little Sunflower." But after 2 weeks she leaves because she may not use her notebook.
