Very disappointed in inability to find book

12-08-2003, 17:37
:(

I joined this site several days ago, and have really enjoyed it so far. It spurred intrigued (as the writer must have intended 8) ) and I set forth on the adventure of purchase.

I love to read, and have not had the pleasure of too many satirical novels, and thought it would be a good change.. I also wrote to my husband who is currently deployed with the Navy,, on you know adventure,, and thought that he would enjoy something of this nature. The current conflict not withstanding,, it could have possibly helped "lighten up" the situation and his worries.

As the FIRST day set forth, I drove to the nearest "big city" (Fresno) to find a copy of Jennifer Government. Likely source, I thought, would be the HUGE Barnes and Noble, at the Corner of Blackstone. Much to my surprise, not only do the NOT carry it, they didn't expect to even have a copy of the paperback until sometime in February. !!! But, oh wait, there is more.. "we can order it for you ma'am"... "OK, when will you get it".. "oh, in about 8 weeks"!!! "8 weeks!!!???? His birthday is in 3, and it takes 2 weeks for his packages to get there. Not to mention,, 8 weeks would be pretty darn close to him being home"..

So, I drive, RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET, to Borders. If you are unfamiliar,, this is an equally aspiring books store and a major source of competition for the above mentioned. "Did they have Jennifer Government?"... uuummm, that would be a big fat NO,, and then they wouldn't even give me the opportunity to order it. Big disappointment.

So, I finish my day in Fresno and drive the 60 miles home. The following day, (yesterday). I decide to go a little closer to home (25 miles) to a more defunct cow/agriculture type of township, and try my luck.. As the only bookstores are located inside the only mall, that we have within a 50 mile radious, I decide this is my best possible choice. Now, mind you,, contrary to popular belief, not all women, love the mall.. It's a real thorn in my side. After much torture of presence, and two bookstores later.. I leave this completely uninhabital place to it's own, empty handed..

Disappointment is huge, as I was really looking forward to this book, and being able to send it to my husband,,, and hopefully being able to "lighten up" his circumstances...

I also don't buy online, so that's not an option..I"m not the trusting sort when it comes to" what is your credit card number"...

Anyways,,, no any GOOD BOOKSTORES, that readily carry a copy of Jennifer Government, in the Central Valley of California????? Somewhere around the Fresno area????

Yes, Amazon is exceptionally trustworthy.

Furthermore, the reason for the insane wait for a paperback, would probably be because the book is currently only out in hardcover.

Well, you could do what I've done. Wait for the paperback. Plan to buy the paperback. Do your utmost within your budget to support fine literature.

In the meantime, head out to your local library and borrow the book. 'Cause, really, why wait?

Don't you have a Book's a Million out there? New books rarely are availible in paperback, it's only 20 bucks in hardcover though.

It's 6 months since the hardback came out, so many stores won't have it on the shelves any more. (Book retail is kind of ruthless like that.) And it's 6 months before the paperback comes out, so nobody will have that.

But even if they don't have it on the shelves, most US and Canadian bookstores should be able to order in the hardback much quicker than 8 weeks. That's an awfully long time.

And as other people have mentioned, Amazon ships faster than that too. :)

There is actual problems finding it in any store in any country where it i available, I think.

I live in the UK and have so far seen it being sold (in small quantities), at one shop (Waterstones) in the largest shopping centre in Europe (Bluewater).

But I've got it so I'm not complaining!

I live in Manchester, UK, and picked it up off a shelf at one of the many bookshops in the city during my lunch break, a week after it came out. No pre-ordering or checking necessary, I was pleasantly surprised, in fact.

Wow, I have only seen it on rare occasions...perhaps it's a north-south thing?

I LOVE TO READ! But were the HELL is Jennifer Government? It's not in the book store, it's not at the library, I think you can get it off Amazon.com, but the last time I bought a book from there (Shogun) the cover got all bent and ripped in transit! So can't I find either Syrup or Jennifer Government? Pissed off now!

Yeah, but Eridanus doesn't trust Amazon because it wrecked the last book he got from there...

Fair enough, I suppose.

However, I ordered both JG and Syrup from Amazon, and they arrived without incident. I wager any problems would be more the fault of the postal service, as opposed to Amazon itself.

Also, anyone unable to find the book at their local bookstore should feel free to make their displeasure known to the staff... it's the only way they'll learn. ;)
