For the same reason Wisconsin rated two stops?

Maybe Max is a big fan of cheese...

It's pretty much dictated by how much interest there seems to be from people and bookstores in each place. And it's the publisher's decision, in the end, because they pay for it.

New York & LA might be skipped because they were covered on the last tour (January 2003).

All this is still very tentative, by the way.

True, but the most populated and the 5th-most populated cities in the USA (New York & Philadelphia) are both on the East Coast. Hopefully, he'll visit one of these. (I live near them.)

Yeah, you and me both. FYI, RedSoviet and I live ni the same town. If we live nearest to Phili and New York City take a wild geuss what state we live in. I'll give you a hint. It starts with the letter N and ends in we Jersey. lol, I love to do that.

There is a chance of London in late September, but I don't know for sure. It costs a lot of money to fly an author around the world to promote a book, so publishers don't usually do it unless it's for a bestseller.

My local Waterstones had a whole bookshelf dedicated to Jennifer Government in the shop window, so I should imagine it must be doing well.

Plenty of people live in Iowa City. ( :D ) It is home to one of thes best literature universities in the US! U of I. Iowa City is one of Iowa's largest cities, even though I don't know if anyone plays NS there, but lots of Jennifer Government Readers. (I am surprised that nobody seems to notice innocent little Iowa, scratch the innocent part!) :) (BTW-Iowa City I'm pretty sure has 60,00ish.) Why do so few people know where Iowa is???) 8) Also, instead of Iowa City, why not visit Ames. Maybe during the Iowa Games, special olympics, nation special olympics soon, or some other time. Great to see there are so many people interested in turning up! :D

I wonder how much of these bookstore appearances will be devoted to talking about the book and how much to NationStates. ;)

This book tour is being organised by Vintage, the US paperback publisher. Basically, it's up to the publisher in any country as to whether they want to send an author around on a tour or not. Vintage have decided they think it will be worthwhile, so there's a nice long tour. Now we just have to pack out bookstores so the various publishers are inspired to do more of them!

Where in London do you live, CE?
Perhaps Max could come to England on a holiday, and just do one of the big bookshops in London.

I might be able to justify Boston if I take my wife there for an extended weekend. *begins scheming and plotting*

And none for Texas? Well I say, this is most upsetting!

It would be great to shake Max Barry's hand and tell him my secret identitie(s) and see if he's heard of me. Oh, I would just faint.

Jennifer Government was a good book too. Which I bought. And still have all to myself.

Wow, I just stumbled upon this thread.

Nyborg, quite a few NationStates players live in Iowa City, because I'm one of them and also have a big mouth. ;) Now, a lot of my friends and family play NS.

I was completely shocked to see that we were included on the list, and would be very interested in finding out when Max will be coming through here. I assume he'd be visiting Prarie Lights?

Heck, if you're going to be around for a day or two, I'll take you and your crew out to a good show. Iowa City has an incredible local music/liberal arts scene. I'll be watching this thread for details.

No need to defend Iowa, or Iowa City for that matter, I apoligize for dissing Iowa City. It's just that there are loads of cities with populations greater than all of Iowa combined that have been left out. Being from one of those left out cities, I was just a bit bummed. But congratulations to you Pope Hope, and Iowans everywhere, for finally getting some recognition. Oh... and thanks for the corn and pork chops. BTW, I would have voted for Bill Bradley. Big Ups to Iowa.

Iowa State sucks! KU rocks! Go Jayhawks! WOOT! :P

lol...thanks Nyborg. Max should certainly try a tenderloin while he's here. Also, you'd probably be surprised to hear that Iowa City draws a lot of good writers and musical acts...because many have started here. Most famous of all, I suppose, is Kurt Vonnegut.

The writer's workshop at the University of Iowa is world reknowned, extremely competetive for admission, and draws people from all over to Iowa City. It's one of the main reasons I chose Iowa myself.

Also, I agree that Iowa State sucks, because I'm a Hawkeye. Ames holds no candle to Iowa City.

Yes, I got to meet Berserker in person as well! :)

Max' reading of JG was quite humorous, and he answered all questions like a true pro. Afterwards all seven of us had a very fun time, and it was easily like we were just a bunch of RL friends hanging out for a few hours after work.

The interview was broadcasted on the internet as well as live radio. Therefore, thanks to Karma, many of the mIRC regulars were able to hear the whole presentation as it happened.

Thanks again for coming here, Max, and you're all welcome to stop by again any time.

All of you who are geographically able should definitely go support our friend and fearless leader as he tours the US. ;)

Young Australian novelist Max Barry reads from his darkly satirical and cautionary tale of the corporate world called Jennifer Government. In Barry's world, we all adopt the surname of the employer we work for; the NRA and the police are almost interchangeable; high profile advertisers use murder as a marketing ploy to boost sales. Max Barry is also the author of the highly praised book, Syrup. He also created the popular free on-line game called "NationStates."
