JG: Name Conventions

26-01-2003, 07:49
I saw "Bush Texaco" sign his name to a post, and liked the tongue-in-cheek humour of it, and considered doing the same...

Until I realized that I would "Michael Crab Shack."

There's something just eminently un-sexy and non-streamlined about that. I mean "Theo Pepsi-Co." That's kinda cool. And, heck, you can't beat "John Nike" for a kind of understated Suavity, but "Michael Crab-Shack?" It just doesn't work. It ranks right up there with "Whats-her-name FashionWarehouse.Com"

Anyone else got a similar problem with their employer/last-name?
26-01-2003, 08:29
Well, that probably means that the company name isn't a very good one, in some cases. The dot-com names are totally out nowadays, anyway.

Although, a lot of company names are based on whoever founded it, so some people might get off with regular-sounding names like James Bell.

Well, I would be Nick Government, so I guess I could be the book's sequel :D

As for unemployed people, in the book, they have no last name. So, Violet is just Violet until she sells her virus to ExxonMobil and becomes Violet ExxonMobil. As for students, schools are sponsored, and they take the school's sponsor's name as their last name (as in Kate Mattel).

What if you work multiple jobs and are also student? I could chose: Rik Lorentz Casimir Lyceum, Rik Five Nations, Rik Addecco, Rik VVM Producties. I guess addecco is still the most normal sounding, but that's only an job agency, so it would then be Rik United Parcel Service, or Rik van der Maat Logistics...pff...that would be confusing.

The naming model isn't that far off from the old models.

I mean, most people were given the surname that reflected their proffession, or even their home town, before the family ties became prevalent.

It's all about identity. And if you identify yourself with your job, your town, your family, or even your company more strongly, it could be reflected in your name.

That's all a name is. A reflection of the self.

That's part of the irony. Everyone in JG holds the ideals of companies higher than all others.

Hmm...from what it seemed like to me in the book, you'd only be able to work full-time at one job, and your name would come from that one employer. The corporate naming convention would have to be something entirely contractural with your employer, so if you worked for Mom and Pop's Grocery, they'd likely allow you to keep your given name. With the state of things in the books, however, finding a small independent business like that would be an event.

As for schools, they were generally funded by private corporations, so you'd inherit the name of the corporation instead of the school itself. If private schools existed outside corporate influence, it would be the obligation of whoever runs the school as to how students would be renamed, if at all. Likely they would be named the ones making a profit from the school.

I'd be "Michael Government," that sounds cool.

You're really shocked? Its growing around much of the world, but especially in free nations where the US influence is strong. Like New Zealand, the Philippines, and Latin America. That's why I thought it made sense for that church to be mentioned in a book where the US spreades all over. I wonder if that was intentional on Max's part, or if he just picked a church at random or for other reasons.

Actually, having grown up in Mormon Central and seeing all the guys I went to high school with go all over the freaking world on missions, I can attest that the LDS church is growing and its growing all over the place. Actually, its the fastest growing church in the world right now. Probably not just because of converts, but because they multiply like freaking rabbits.

I'd be...Francis Chuck's.

Last Christmas, my (Mormon) neighbors gave a DVD about Christmas. At the end was a short featurette about, "...if you want more information on the Mormon Church, contact your local Church, or call one of these toll-free numbers...". Then, there were a series of numbers, for the US, for Australia, for the UK, and then...for Ireland? I wonder how much recruiting they get done there.

If I was by some extreme circumstance a Mormon, I certainly wouldn't want to be in Ireland. 400 years ago my ancestors travelled from England to Ireland to steal Catholic land. Then there was a peasent uprising, and they were stuck in Ireland, so they quickly converted (back in England, the family was hardline Methodist) to Catholicism. To this day we're still Catholic.

Seriously, I won't be converting soon...in fact, I even considered the path of priesthood. That would make me...Francis Vatican? Francis Church?
