JENNIFER GOVERNMENT THE BOOK

I ACTUALLY RAN OUT AND BOUGHT THE BOOK THE DAY IT CAME OUT JUST TO ENSURE THAT THIS GAME STAYS UP AND RUNNING. I NOTICED THAT THIS GAME/WEBSITE HAS BEEN RUNNING MUCH MORE EFFECTIVELY SINCE THE BOOK CAME OUT. COINCIDENCE? AS FOR THE BOOK INFLUENCING THE GAME, HAS ANYONE READ THE UN PROSAL BEFORE THE UN TO BAN McDONALD'S? I WONDER IF THAT WAS INFLUENCED BY THE BOOK. JUST A THOUGHT.

I got it the day it came out, and read it in 4 hours.

I got it the day it was delivered to the local Borders (it's nice having house-mates working at a bookstore). LOVED IT. I could go into a lot of textual analysis (I've gotta do SOMETHING with an English Degree), but I wouldn't want to spoil anything. :-P

I thoroughly enjoyed the book, felt it was a change of taste for me, as I tend to read much longer books than this one. I feel the book achieved its purpose in the amount of pages it had very effectively, and that is a big feat for a book to do. Sometimes, it actually harms a book (or series, for that matter) if it's too long. With Jennifer Government, I was wishing it was longer! Oh how I enjoyed reading it! I'm gonna have to read it again. And again. And probably another time after that. Plus, I'll have to read it before AND after the movie is released (The movie better be released! This book could be the screenplay for the movie! It's THAT simple! Oh yeah...who would play the role of Jennifer Government in the first place?)

I'm not going to go into details (I was about to type something that would go into detail!) I have to say this: If you enjoy quality books, require a book that is enjoyable, refreshing for a change of pace, action packed and has hints of romance and just about every other literary form out there, I would highly suggest you read Jennifer Government.

Did someone say "Robert Jordan"?

I thought the book was pretty good. It's not the type of story I'd generally pick up so I was pleasantly suprised.
08-02-2003, 02:54
I wanted more closure at the end. But I definitely wanna get out and see the movie. Considering I usually prefer to wait five years and catch a movie on TV, that's a show of interest. :)
10-02-2003, 04:24
Great Book, as far as there not being closure at the end, that just leaves it open for more books in the series.

Kentaku Bo, The Wheel of Time Series has gone on too long but at leat its still readable and enjoyable. It could be worse, it could have degenerated into the pap thatr is the Sword of Truth Series, which showed such promise. :( But one series that's excellent and lives up to its length is A Song of ice and Fire

As an employee of Barnes & Noble, I had to smile at that scene. Part of the irony is that at my store, we have "Jennifer Government" displayed in the new fiction window. Umm...not with the bestsellers...

Definitly a fun read, even for an old cyber-punker like myself. I like all the characters, even John Nike - the man I love to hate.

Got my copy on Saturday and finished it by Tuesday. A very easy read.

I hope this doesn't piss off Mr. Barry (who's probably reading this thread), but as a serious student of sf, I didn't find the book that compelling - I probably wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't for this site and game. At best, it's a cyberpunk spoof in the tradition of William Shatner. It raises no good questions like Gibson and Sterling do, and it doesn't seem very original.

While Mr. Barry strongly spoofs how an entirely free-market society would look like, all he does is spoof - there's no real serious argument there. He quotes von Hayek once, and it seems like he's demeaning him. If Mr. Barry opposes von Hayek, he needs some better arguments. There are better arguments than the ones the school kids made up in their papers (another cheap shot at capitalism).

However, Mr. Barry did acknowledge where he got some of his ideas, such as "The Space Merchants," so he probably knows what he's doing. Besides, I haven't even tried to publish my non-fiction manuscript yet.

> I have had the book for quite a while now. I finished reading it in two days. I really loved the book. It was humorous and ironically close to reality. I could see 911 refusing to send help until they have proof of purchase. I could see a scandel such as the NIKE incident happening (anything for money). That is the world we live in!

Actually, your biggest gripe is what I love about the book. There is no moralizing. There is no preaching. There is no issues with how the world is, it just exists. It in fact wallows in consumerism and capitalism. That is what makes it FUN.

If I wanted to read theory about free market economies, I'll go take a class. If I want to have fun reading a great story, I'll read this, thank you very much.

Both Gibson and Sterling quite effectively tackle big questions without "preaching" and "moralizing" - a decent writer can do that.

FYI, I never took a class that studied Hayek, but do so on my own time. While reading a good story without background is your right, don't expect your reviews to mean anything if you don't.

I loved the book. I read it in a school day (meaning, in class). It's circling my group of friends that pretty much functions as a library.

Funniest thing is, for our theatre awards banquet (which was basically a costume party with trophies and plaques), my boyfriend and I dressed up as Jennifer Government and Buy Mitsui (or however you spell that). Painting a barcode under my eye with eyeliner was fun!

Just up to part Five and am enjoying it.

One thing that I noticed was the spelling of 'mommy', if Barry is Australian why not spell is properly: 'mummy'? Is it so it fits with the American market? Is this hypocritical? Although the americanisation of 'capitalism' to 'capitalizm' is obviously a pun.

The biggest joke is that it is set in Melbourne, it makes it seem much more exciting than it really is (Melbourne, not the the book that is).

"Nike kills children!"

Yes, creating this nation, and US Alliance, was simply too impossible to resist. Argh. Anyway, if you couldn't tell, I absolutely loved the book, it was incredibly amusing. It was also quite a refreshing change from my usual fantasy reads.

I think that Violet got the worst deal... She worked hard on that uber cool software, got shipped to london and did her job, didn't get her $3million in the end, and lost her boyfriend to her sister....

eh, John Nike had what was coming to him...

The book was fun to read. The characters were rather one-dimensional but that may have been a deliberate choice by the author. I'm now looking for Syrup.
30-06-2003, 22:46
Just picked it up. Had to after reading the first chapter here on the site. Haven't started it yet, but can't wait to get into it.

Waiting for Syrup to be reissued to bookstores...will it happen?

And whats this about a Jennifer Government MOVIE??? When? Where?
01-07-2003, 03:30
I heard of the book on Triple J a while back, and found this game through an article in NI. Yesterday I finally got around to buying the book, and read it in about 7 hours (including a break for dinner and to watch a couple of TV shows).

I recognised a few influences, ruce Sterling and William Gibson (who have already been mentioned), Ben Elton, Neal Stephenson, and some others whos names I can't remember right now.

I loved the scene with the attack on Nike Town, how the customers were so consumerised that they thought it was some kind of promotion.

The spelling of "mummy" as "mommy" is because, in the book, Australia is part of the US.

So, how long until we see viruses that spread through antivirus updates?

Well there was a rather nasty one about a year ago that corrupted files on Norton and McAfee. It didn't do much else, but it killed the antivirus program.

Untill you went to their website and got the patch.

Is this book just a huge crack on Capitalism and Free Markets? Or does it actually have a point to it? Other than being entertaining.

P.S. I haven't read it yet.. I want to know if I should pick it up or just forget about it because I'll get aggravated.

Well, as someone who is a big fan of both capitalism and free markets, I can honestly say that I enjoyed the book. I look at the concept of Capitalizm as more of a back-drop, as opposed to a hammer used to beat the reader. The Capitalizt world is the setting for the book, as opposed to an Ayn Rand-style soapbox.
