My thoughts on Jennifer Government

Basically, I wanted to say it's a great book to read, fun, too. It reminds me a lot of HHGTTG in terms of some of the characters, and the utter lack of control of their own destinies, in particular Hack in the first half of the book or so. It was a highly enjoyable read, and it was also interesting to explore the world in which Jennifer et. al. exist in.

If I have one criticism, it is that I kept getting the sense that I was reading a movie - I think I would have liked to know a little more about what was going on in the heads of the character.

However, that doesn't mean that I didn't love the book. I'll recommend it to all my friends, and be first in line when the movie comes out. :)

I didn't see so much of Douglas Adams' in Hack Nike as... well, some pathetic, low self-esteem drudge. That is UNLIKE Arthur Dent only in that Dent actually TRIED to change his destiny and kept getting swept back into the Guide's Plans for him (that sentence will ONLY make sense if you've read "Mostly Harmless.") Meanwhile, Hack tries to change his stars... and succeeds. He's still the same old Hack in many ways (making a goodly number of bad choices here and there), but with more internal strength. Suddenly he's got a CAUSE to be the new, improved Hack for (whether it's the Group or Claire, take your pick).

The "fate" aspects, I read to be more of a blend of narrative necessity (I loved the intertwining plot elements) and a kind of psychic gravity that the Chadwick shootings carried. I mean, anything THAT major is going to have a habit of drawing all those involved back into itself, atleast in a literary world.

Good to know I'm not the only one making that comparision.
