Best Resolution of 2008 - Group 1

Similar contest to what we did last year (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=550338) and in 2005 (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=472509), only this time the UN/WA transition adds an extra kink. Half of the UN resolutions passed in 2008 were repeals, and some of the actual laws passed have already been redone in WA form. And none of them apply anymore anyway. So without objection, all 2008 resolutions passed under the UN will not be considered in these polls.

Twenty-nine WA documents left to consider - with four repealed ones being left out - give us two arbitrary groupings of eight, and one more of nine. This is the first group; the poll will remain open for seven days. In case anyone needs reminding:

#1: The World Assembly (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835528&postcount=3)
#2: Rights and Duties of WA States (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835552&postcount=4)
#4: Restrictions on Child Labor (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835666&postcount=6)
#6: Humanitarian Transport (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835708&postcount=8)
#7: Workplace Safety Standards Act (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835730&postcount=9)
#8: World Assembly Headquarters (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835755&postcount=10)
#9: Prevention of Torture (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835796&postcount=11)
#10: Nuclear Arms Possession Act (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835811&postcount=12)
#11: Repeal "The Right to a Fair Trial" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13835834&postcount=13)The top three will be put together with the top three from the other two groups in a final round.

Post giving the reasons for your vote below, if desired, IC or OOC. Enjoy!

Whoops, apparently "multiple choice" on Jolt means all or nothing. You're on your honor to choose three, and all votes are public anyway, so I can catch ballot-stuffers. :p

Well if I remember rightly, The WA HQ resolution kinda peeved off some of the representatives here in the festering snakepit(always a bonus). And for purely financial reasons I voted for Right to nukes.....the Atomic Annies IPAA produces ain't going to sell themselves.:D

I liked WAHQ act the best. Just because it had a little humor, and captured the WA with a perfect representation. :D

I didn't like the first resolution; I was a bit annoyed #4 made so many concessions on child soldiers; #7 unfortunately left out requiring employees be informed of risks; it'd be impolite to vote for my own; didn't like #10; and the repeal just led to a second bad trial resolution.

So that leaves #2, #6, and #8; if only to annoy the 'it won by only a very small margin!!!!!!!!' repeal artists, I hope the latter wins.

Hr'rmm...
Parts of #1 might have been necessary for organisational reasons, but I didn't like the fact that it threw out all of the UN resolutions -- including those that I considered useful, or otherwise justifiable -- rather than just the ones that (in my opinion) deserved it.
I'd have liked #2 better if it had been significantly more Sovereigntist in tone, and had declared that jurisdiction over various matters (You probably know my list...) would remain with the separate nations.
The rights involved in #4 aren't all quite "fundamental" by my reckoning, but then cubs do need more protection than adults.
The topic of #6 is one that intrinsically involves interactions between nations, so I accept that it is a valid subject for international legislation... and the resolution's fairly well-written.
The subject of #7, on the other paw, is amongst those matters that I think should have been left to the member-nations' separate jurisdictions.
Although #8 might help the Assembly itself to function it doesn't exactly do much for the WA's member-nations or for their peoples.
The rights covered by #9 are pretty fundamental, because it would be harder to exercise any other rights (such as voting, or emigration) if one had been severely tortured. I disagree with a few details, but on the whole think that this does a good job.
#10 is pro-Sovereignty, but is about one of the fields of activity for which I consider international legislation justifiable. Bears Armed has never had any of these 'nuclear' weapons, and has no plans to ever develop or purchase any of them either... (OOC: If I was voting as 'St Edmund' rather than as 'Bears Armed' then this would have my support, but from a more Ursine viewpoint it doesn't quite make the top three...)
And #11 was a good repeal, getting rid of a bad resolution (even if it was another bad one that was then passed as a replacement...), but I'd rather vote for 'substantive' resolutions (at least in this context...) instead of repeals.

So: #4, #6, & #9.

Regardless of anyone's personal feelings on the subject, "The World Assembly" really was a clever way to mark the transition from the UN to the WA. And the smack at the RL U.N. in the text was well-deserved. "Rights and Duties" was a shoo-in for me; there wasn't a way I would have not voted for it. And had not one of my own resolutions been included in the mix, "Nuclear Arms Possession Act" easily would have been my third choice. The rest of them meh.

The Ardchoillean delegation votes for the WA HQ as top choice; The World Assembly for second, it being a stand-out for its truthiness; and Workplace Relations for third, because we have to maintain Ardchoille's federalist cum internationalist stance somehow, and that seemed the most annoyingly intrusive for sovereigntists.

The Ardchoillean delegation votes for the WA HQ as top choice...Oh, and of course the fact that the resolution happens to quote you wouldn't have anything to do with that.

Oh, and of course the fact that the resolution happens to quote you wouldn't have anything to do with that.

*Queen Victoria voice*: We are above such petty vanity.

OOC: Of course, an RPer with the merest smidgen of insight would have realised that Dicey, by favouring a Kennyite resolution, is deliberately (if subtly) highlighting the growing split in attitude between the country's WA delegation and its home government ...

Ambassador Gardner blearily shuffles in.

Whazzat? No resolutions for me to quibble about? Aw, man...

Uh, we liked the first one, cause it started this whole WA business, y'know? And the repeal was good, and, uh, torture's bad. So, so, so getting rid of it is good!

Yeah, it's gonna take a while to get back in the groove...

OOC edit confirming IC suspicion of distance-from-groove, upon revisiting Plutoni's actual voting record--we didn't like #9 at the time. If possible, could you ignore our vote for it and chalk it up for #4 instead? Might not make a big difference, but whatever.
