Vague Idea for a Proposal

Category: Social Justice
Strength: Mild
Proposed by: Rejian

Recognizes that situations may occur in which a citizen of one country may be legally detained in another;

Accepts that a nation may see the need to protect its citizens detained in foreign nations;

Understands the need for dialogue between nations regarding the incarceration of foreign citizens;

Strongly recommends that nations contact the respective embassy/government of any foreign citizen detained and currently imprisoned.

The above proposal is extremely bare and vague, and I'd very much appreciate any thoughts or comments on ways to improve/expand it past the fetal form it is currently in.

Please look at the category description of "Social Justice". I don't think it does what you think it does. You may wish to look at other categories.

Seems to me we had an Extradition resolution in the old UN. That would be my initial starting point.

I don't think so: that one was about refusing extradition where capital punishment was involved.

This is a good idea, and I hope you pursue it, but it's a bit simple. Most countries will do this already: in fact, I can't imagine why they wouldn't. There's no need to recommend it to them. The only occasion where they wouldn't would be if they didn't actually know the people were detained in the first place. So, maybe you could require that countries tell foreign governments if they've detained any of their nationals. You could also require that, in such cases, they allow either an embassy official or a neutral third party observer access to the detainee to ensure fair treatment.

I was thinking perhaps requiring the prosecuting government to allow a representative of the detainee's government present in the court room (if applicable) or otherwise granting access to the legal proceedings.
