As a reply to the rant thread below about banning nuclear weapons, I propose the following piece of legislation:


The United Nations may not restrict the right of any member nation to possess a nuclear deterrent.


This does not prevent the UN from legislating the nature of the deterrent, or the situations when it can be used, of course.

That formulation is illegal: the UN can't prohibit itself from action explicitly. It can do so implicitly, by granting nations immutable rights: but then, it's already done so (http://www.nationstates.net/page=UN_past_resolutions/start=108) in the case of nuclear weapons, which would seem to make this a bit redundant.
