Why I've Left the UN....
Unoccupied America

....the Free Trade Fanatics have gotten out of hand. The final assault on economic sovereignty with "The Free Trade of Durable Goods" has forced my hand. From now, the Free Trade Fascists can have the UN, as far as I'm concerned. Some of us still prefer to have high tariffs for a strong industrial base. After all, even in the Information Age, someone still has to make things. What's more, tariffs beat the graduated income tax for a source of government revenue. They aren't Marxist, as the income tax is by definition (it was a plank of the Communist Manifesto, by the way). I, for one, prefer the way of Washington, Hamilton, Madison, (Jefferson, too, came around to protectionism), and Lincoln to the way of Marx, Engels, Wilson, and FDR.
So, on that note, I regretfully depart the UN, which would be more tolerable, if it wasn't so determined to imitate the real UN, the successor to Wilson's dubious brainchild, the League of Nations.

Sweet... can I have his office?
Seigfried cast a mock harsh glare towards Ambassador Youlkin. "If we are truly Marxist radicals as the gentleman states, it is each according to his needs...and I NEED that office more than you, Youlkin."
The ambassador from Catawaba turned his attention with sincerity to the departing ambassador from Unoccupied America. "Sir, I think you mistake the intentions of this Free Trade of Durable Goods Act. It does not rip down all the economic barriers of your country, only the punitive ones that prevent foriegn countries from competing within yours. You are still allowed protective measures to prevent hostile economic tactics such as price dumping, you are allowed to act to prevent or recover from economic instability, and can act to protect your enviroment, culture, and national security."
Seigfried shook his head. "In my support of free trade iniatives, I follow not Marx, Engles, or any socialist you could name but the fundamental tenets of Liberalism from people such as John Locke and Adam Smith. Economic Liberalism, lassez-faire economics, if you will, or free trade are near interchangeable synonyms. Jefferson believed in Liberalism, and the most of the American forefathers believed in Liberalism when they wrote their Declaration of Independence and Constitution. If they did not practice it when in office?" He shrugged. "They are acting to protect a new nation, new industries like a burgeoning textile industry in New England. I suspect they were trying either prime the pump for Americans to begin buying American products rather than keep in the same colony-esque economy of buying manufactured goods from England, but they may have also been protecting the textile industry from English price dumping."

Nations with a poor standard of living competing with our higher standard of living puts us at a disadvantage. However, if they can do it (whatever it is) better than we can, and cheaper besides... then they should do it and we should not. Preventing globalization is a bit like punishing someone for working hard. The free market shows that everyone benefits when everyone focuses on their strengths and trades these freely, with little or no government interference.
We are sorry to see you leave, and do hope we can maintain peaceful economic relations with your nation in the future.

Nigel smirked "I'll tell you what Seigfried, I'll take the office and let you work for me for a while until you earn it. " he said tongue firmly planted in cheek, while he slipped the building management gnome a 5 spot to move his stuff in.
Nigel looked up at the rest of the GA, "Oh sorry Free Trade, yes it does have negative things and those countries hat are looking at this as a hardship will only see the hardships but Free Trade does some good things. It has benefits.
You want the benefits of free trade? Food is cheaper. Food is cheaper, clothes are cheaper, steel is cheaper, cars are cheaper, phone service
is cheaper. It lowers prices, it raises income. Most importantly though, Free trade helps stops wars, and that’s it. Free trade stops wars! And we figure out a way to fix the rest! One world, one peace. I’m sure I’ve seen that on a sign somewhere. We are sorry that you decided to leave without stopping for 5 seconds to figure out the other side of the story. Truly sorry."
Nigel sat down, and leaned to an assistant. "See what parking space he had, if it was closer than mine I'll see about taking that."

So the UN passed a resolution or two that you don't like, big frakking whoop. The UN's passed a lot of resolutions that I didn't like but I never left. Why is that you may ask? It's because I understand that the only way to change the UN is from within the belly of the beast. To have the most effect on UN politics, you have to be a member. As far as I'm concerned, resigning because of a few resolutions is the cowards way out.

Tariffs are based upon the same principle as the marxist income tax anyway. The principle that theft is acceptable in the name of the state or the masses. If you dislike Marx that much, than act in accordance with it and reject all taxes, including tariffs.

Respectfully to the former UN Member of Unoccupied America,
If you must leave then, leave with good tidings. However, might I suggest an alternate path?
Stay, or re-apply and quickly.
It is only with dissenting voices that the whole is made better. We are not islands, though my older brother is quite the peninsula, but I digress … We are not islands, but we are a body whole and complete. Self reliance and sovereignty is not impugned in this body. Nay, it is upheld. And with a voice so strong in upholding sovereignty as yours; we, as the body, need and require your voice to be heard.
Please reconsider.
Or you could piss off and get out, whichever. Leave the marbles, they aren’t yours. Pay off your parking tickets before leaving the premises and don’t forget to drop off your security badge at the gate. :fluffle:

I don't need an office in the building anyway.
My office is a pioneer class starship 10kms above the planet :)
