Best Resolution of 2007, Group 1

Right, this was done in 2005 and I think should be re-instated. Partly because it's a good idea, and partly the trophy's taking up room in the Cobdenian Office and if we're to still have it, we'd like to say it's not just because we refuse to give it back/no-ones bothered to do a contest again, so here I go.

Basic format will be threads covering ten resolutions each in chronological order, and you have to vote for one in each (use the poll, for goodness sake) and post your answer too. Don't cheat and use puppets, just one vote per player - no way i can stop this, but honesty is the best policy. The first and second place in each section will go through to the final. Resolutions that passed during 2007 that were subsequently repealed in 2007 are disqualified. This only effects Max Barry Day, and means that we don't have to worry about wild cards or anything like that.

The candidates for group one are:

#192: Sexual Privacy Act (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12194562&postcount=193)
#193: Extraordinary Rendition (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12231403&postcount=194)
#194: No Ex Post Facto Laws (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12231405&postcount=195)
#195: Healthcare Certification (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12259544&postcount=196)
#196: Repeal "UN Educational Committee" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12270690&postcount=197)
#197: Continuity Of Government (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12412269&postcount=198)
#198: Emigration Rights (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12412273&postcount=199)
#199: Repeal "Free education" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12412278&postcount=200)
#200: Radiological Terrorism (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12412280&postcount=201)
#201: Repeal "Hydrogen Powered Vehicles" (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12412284&postcount=202)

Voting ends at 1700 GMT on the Monday 28th January, 2008. After this, I'll post the second group

[OOC: But "Repeal "Max Barry Day"" is still in the running, right? :p
[Posting IC, since that's the way I voted:]

The Federal Republic has nominated Continuity of Government for Best Resolution of 2007 in this group. We thought it hilarious and sensible at the same time, and wonderfully ironic. Obviously Mr. Koopman of Knootoss was best-equipped to lead emergency operations at UNHQ, since he's the one who's been trying to burn it down all these years! No Ex Post Facto Laws we thought equally hilarious, sensible and ironic (since it itself contained an ex post facto law), but we like CoG better.

Sexual Privacy Act we voted against, since it effectively made practicing incest an internationally protected right; Extraordinary Rendition we opposed, since it restricted our right to practice extraordinary rendition; Healthcare Certification, Emigration Rights, Repeal "Free education" ... booooooring; we barely even remember Hydrogen Powered Vehicles being repealed; Radiological Terrorism was an excellent resolution, and Repeal "UN Educational Committee" got so many idiots riled up over ACCEL and "OMGREPEELCONSPEERASEES!!!!111111", etc., that we nearly voted for it.

But no, we voted for Continuity of Government, and all you hippy scumbags who opposed it because it was "Political Stability" are just going to have to live with it.

We found this a difficult choice, since there were three strong contenders. We finally settled on Healthcare Certification as probably, indirectly, making the greatest difference in the lives of the greatest numbers of people, but it was a narrow business.

For sheer clarity of purpose and implementation, "Extraordinary Rendition" receives our vote.

OOC: A very difficult choice, yes. I ended up voting for 'Emigration Rights', because that makes it easier for people to move around until they find a nation whose rules they like (and therefore makes trying to standardise how nations treat people less "necessary").

We voted for "Emigration Rights"; while there are plenty of resolutions in this batch we would be happy to see progress to the next round, this one stands out for being relatively simple, a useful measure in promoting international human rights, and important in the wider context of international law.

OOC: Good idea to redo this, Cobbles!

We felt that Extraordinary Rendition was rather extraordinary, and thus deserving of our vote.

For reasons of openness, and because I want to bump, I'd best let you all know that I voted for No Ex Post Facto Laws. I have often had a policy of voting for resolutions with Latin in them, ergo I voted for this one
