I've endeavored to keep up our page for UN Headquarters (ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/UN_Headquarters), but the pics we choose for the UN Building keep collapsing. The first image was one of some old European castle, or something, but the link expired. So I replaced it with an image of a Chicago highrise. Luckily, I was too lazy to upload the pic, and that link, too, bit the dust. And a wiki page with nothing but an office listing is rather boring. So we need a picture of the UN Building everyone can agree upon. Post your suggestions here: something relatively modern, as the UN was only founded in 2003, unless you're into that retro look. Keep in mind the building is 40 stories high, above ground, so it should be, you know, substantial enough to accommodate that kind of space. Nothing too unconventional or avante-garde, either. Secretary General Gratwick, we understand, is rather, shall we say?, conservative woman, and wouldn't want a flashy symbol of metropolitan values defiling her beloved UN.

I'll go with whatever design most participants here seem to like best.

OoC: I always sought of imagined it to be a horrid mixture of archintechural styles. As if one architect designed it originally, but as the UN grew, the building had extra levels put onto it, with new architects designing each new section as all of them, successively, got seriously annoyed with the bureaucracy and meddling in the UN, they could never get the same person to do a section twice. We could then also add a section in the article about the architect for each section and their nationality, which would make it more interesting. Might be able to do a diagramme on MS Paint...

That it is :D

I'm inclined against the ultramodern stuff, as well as the overly tall structures. We have to remember, the building's only 40 stories high.

I like Cob's idea. Is there a way to locate a picture of such a horridly mismatched architectural nightmare? I also liked Rubina's suggestion for segregating the capitalists from the socialists. ;)

This is the building I originally had placed on the wiki page, though it was a much better photograph, another of which I can't seem to find:

Truthfully, I think Cookesland's first design fits the bill best. It looks tall enough, has that nice sort of modern, but not too modern, look, and has a good variety of smooth, flat, and rounded shapes.

Biggest issue I see is lack of adequate defenestration facilities. At best, you'd only fall a couple stories.

Assuming we're not going to make the UN Building as large as Mt. Fuji, I like #1/4 of Akimonad's.

As popular as the shipping-container behemoth has proven, I really think Rubina's latest suggestion (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12875840&postcount=29) is the best. Actually, that earth-tone block at the end could very easily be a modular construction from the 'shit-a-brick' architectural school. There's not reason in the world that couldn't expand or shrink as needed by stacking more modules / containers on top. Best (worst) of both worlds.

I have Revit 9 so I could make a few all new buildings if that's all right.

I was hoping somebody would step up to the challenge. My friend who does architectural animation has moved.

Design spec: Must contain A General Assembly Hall capable of seating 30,000-40,000 delegates (could conceivably be half that size, as most nations vote virtually or never show up at all. Hell, a really big conference room might be big enough)
Offices for approximately the same number of delegations, including several speaking members and assorted staff.
Conference rooms that will handle between two and two hundred argumentative delegates, where they can hash out their proposals in a semblance of privacy
A large bar with at least a portion of it made to look like an old English Gentleman's Club, and another portion to be a smoky, dimly lit film noir jazz club. The windows on the bar must be large, frangible, and extremely easy to replace.
An annex with large spacious offices for all the International Organizations and Committees we've created. (Large freight corridors and dumpsters for all the ones we frequently repeal into non-existence)
A massive lobby with Gift Shop, including a tip jar (for the UN budget)
An enormous sub-basement with integrated internal high speed rail for rapid movement between offices, rail lines, airports, teleporters, and pretty much any other form of transport. (Ceiling height may be reduced to 1.5 m if necessary to save space. Most gnomes are shorter than that.) It need not appear in your diagram, but we have to know it's there.I'm sure there are things I've left out, and others that may be controversial. Feel free to add to the list.
Cobdenia

I'd add:

-Forty stories high, but with a flat roof so that more can be added if neccessary (personally, I'd say only a limited number of countries actually have offices in the UN, the others sending in representatives to the GA from outside when needed)
-The General Assebly takes up four or five floors, so it's probably best to have the first four or five floors take up more space on the ground the those above so there's room for all the delegates in the GA
-Top floor should look derelict, if possible
-Roof should be spacious and be covered with antenna, satellite dishes, AA guns, etc.

Not sure how much of this is possible...
