New Educational Program
A resolution to promote funding and the development of education and the arts.

Category: Education and Creativity
Area of Effect: Educational
Proposed by: Worldwide Ministries

Description: This proposal was developed after deep consideration on where Government money is being spent. Therefore, this proposal is aiming in raising the funding in Education.

1) Educational material will be chosen by a group of
scientists who are politically independent and will not use their position to pass on social or political ideas.

2) All educational material should be focused on passing the truth and nothing else.

3) UN members are called to raise all educational standards by starting programs that educate and open the minds of young people.

4) Such programs will be funded (about the 42%) by the UN.

Please vote if you support it...
(the voting in the NS applies only to UN Delegates)

Sorry, didn't know that I wasn't a delegate. May as well leave my position though.

I of course, like the idea behind this proposal. Education is very important.

But I don't like the part where the UN decides what the learning material will be. You say that the group of scientists appointed to decide will not favour any particular ideal, but I cannot see how that could be achieved.

On part 2 is also highly debatable, there are many things that have no definite truth, and who would decide about ideas that belong with belief, spiritual or scientific belief.

I do however approve of the the overall message of the last two parts which cover the need for improved education.

Yes, by saying the truth i mean that for example history will not be written in favour of capitalism or the other side. The material should think of both sides.

Yes, education is important, but this proposal is not a good idea.
1) Educational material will be chosen by a group of scientists who are politically independent and will not use their position to pass on social or political ideas.
Ok, for a start, I'm a scientist by education, but I don't know a damn thing about history. Why should 'scientists' be picking education material for artistic or literary subjects? Unless you mean 'educational scientists' in which case you might want to clarify (or, preferably, use a different term).

Also, we don't think there's anything wrong with passing on 'social...ideas' in education. In fact, can you imagine an education totally devoid of any social context? It'd be completely meaningless, and children would come out of it unable to adapt to the world. Again, I suspect this is not what you mean, but you need some precision in your language.

(And if this means the UN will choose our textbooks, outright opposed.)
2) All educational material should be focused on passing the truth and nothing else.
Given this is totally subjective, we can probably live with it.
3) UN members are called to raise all educational standards by starting programs that educate and open the minds of young people.
Not unreasonable, but you might want to mention how.
4) Such programs will be funded (about the 42%) by the UN.
All states can already apply to the UNEAF for funding.

just remember to pick the category before you choose a proposal and then put it in for a draft first.

Let's suppose this is a draft, right?
Any ideas?
Something?

Here's an idea: don't do it. It's illegal in almost every particular as it directly contradicts article 6 of the UN Educational Aid Act (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=11663193&postcount=172). Under that, you can't tell any nation what to put in its courses or how to pay for them. Even when it's a good idea (and much of what you say is), you can't do it without repealing that annoying resolution first, and that isn't going to happen.

I will have a look, but why is it annoying?

It's annoying because it's basically a very good resolution. It's just that one clause, in an effort not to trespass too far into national sovereignty, blocks a lot of potentially useful legislation.
