Democratic Freedom Bill

i am proposing the following bill to the UN:

Description: Within the UN, countries expect freedom and liberty for its citizens. The 'democratic freedom bill' safeguards these rights by establishing the Democratic Principles Committee (DPC):

i) each member state elects a representative to sit on the committee
ii) annual checks are made on member states to ensure that countries comply and uphold 'democracy' (i.e. fair election systems, equal rights to vote, fair party campaigning practice)
iii) proposals can be put forward by member states on the improvement of democratic freedom

overall, this bill protects citizens rights, ensuring democracy is maintained as a fair and honest system

feel free to debate the proposal..and i would be grateful if it could be approved

OOC: A committee of 26,314 people? Wouldn't that be... slightly inefficient?

More to the point, game rules state that nations are not represented in UN committees.

Welcome to the UN. Thank you for your first effort, but before you go any further please read this (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=420465) carefully. Good luck!

Moreover, forcing nations to accept democracy amounts to an ideological ban (illegal), and all this really does is establish a committee (also illegal).

While I support the idea, there is one problem I see with this ((other then the national representative part possibly violating a rule)). If this DPC is made up of one representative from each member state, doesn't that mean that the ideas of democracy it is supposed to uphold are, ironically, subject to majority rule? I.e. if 50% + 1 of member nations were ever to be dictatorships, it would pretty effectively make the DPC toothless as those nations refused to regulate themselves.

This is why we don't join the UN. All these silly ideas of 'democracy'.

The very idea of forcing democracy on the UN is ludicrous. I commend whoever decided that this resolution is illegal, but the fact that anyone, anywhere would ever consider this a good idea reminds me why Alstitua is unlikely to ever join the UN. That idiot from Paradica would probably like it though.

The very idea of forcing democracy on the UN is ludicrous.

... ummmm ....

... isn't the UN by it's very nature a democratic body?

... (i) and doesn't that 'committee' sound an awful lot like the General Assembly?

... (ii) and doesn't that annual check function sound an awful lot like the Compliance Ministry?

... (iii) and can't every member of the General Assembly already put forward proposal ideas based on the Furtherment of Democracy (assuming they can find two endorsers, that is)?

Overall ... this is the UN. The only thing they don't do in this proposal is enforce the illegal portion, that bit about democracy. Seems kinda pointless to repeat it.

You cannot force democracy. Do you want to be responsible for increaced conflict? I mean, some countries work just fine without democracy and nobody complains.

Democracy works in the hands of capable, educated people. And what is freedom? Countries that are not Democratic are not tyranical nations. I myself, who did away with Elections due to professional reasons, do not tie my people in chains. I let them live their lives, and if they mess up, then they must answer to the law. Therefore, I cannot support this bill.

I run my country the way I see fit. I don't need an international body, which I would be a part of, telling me that what I'm doing is illegal. I reject this concept, and find it offensive, as there are many non-democratic nations here that simply do not want democracy.

My council brings issues in front of me. I accept whomever has the strongest argument in favor of what is best for The Confederacy of Tha RockHouse Valley.

While Tha RockHouse Valley might be a "Father Knows Best" state, it is how I wish to run it. We are economically strong, and new bills are being passed every day, trying to give people more personal and political freedoms.

I reject this proposal because it will make democracy compulsary. The only thing compulsary in my nation is military service for two years. And even that might be repealed. I'm still debating that.

So the vote from Tha RockHouse Valley is "NAY."

You cannot force democracy to those whom do not want it. Democracy is to be free, to let others what they want to be. so why, in a since of acting on Imperialist terms, will you try and force democracy on others? That is not true democracy.

The UN stands for United Nations. Nations of all types of government come to gether for a Peaceful resolvement in conflicts. If there was only Democracy, then instead of the UN, you would have the DN (Democratic Nations).
