What do you think about my proposal the Free voting act? It is already a UN proposal. Please tell me your thoughts.

The Free Voting act

A resolution to increase democratic freedoms.

Category: The Furtherment of Democracy

Strength: Strong

Proposed by: Dennisso

Description: A resulution to not allow any Democratic nation to have compulsory voting laws.
1. While I recognize forcing people to vote would stop only gun-nuts from voting.
2. But also understanding that forcing people to get out of their busy lives to vote destroys the ideals of Democracy.
3. And also believing that if people don't like the current governments, that they can vote if they wish.
4. And so Proposing the free voting act to allow people to choose whether to vote or not.

Voting Ends: Wed Jun 7 2006

Secondly, a compulsory vote means they have to submit a ballot, not neccessarily a vote (as the ballot could be spoilt and considered void).

Thirdly, if a government has forced their population to vote, they must be prepared to suffer the economic consequences, or the cost of making it convienient to voters.

Fourthly, I think the form of government and how that government is chosen falls within the auspices of the national interest, and should not be legislated upon in the UN

The ambassador from Hirota is correct. It is not the general policy of the United Nations to attack certain types of government, regardless of the type of resolution or type of government in question. While we do agree with your intentions, this is not the proper venue for such a discussion.

We Emancipators believe that compulsory voting laws are not an issue. If a nation wants to undertake the hardship of enforcing such laws, let them. It is certainly not a crime to make people vote every once in awhile.

We of the Saturn Corp, believe that compulsary voting laws are a disaster. The majority of our stockholders neither know nor care about politics, and are happy to leave it to those who do. The small percentage who DO vote are generally the most knowledgable, the ones who have the biggest stake in the outcome, and the ones who have received the biggest kickbacks.

We have compulsory voting and like it. Two hours before voting starts We send out teams of men and women with pick handles and guns and roust the citizens to come vote. Those who refuse are tied up with painted ropes and put in stocks to be used in the market places.

Personally, down with compulsory voting, but speaking as a UN member I must note that, as previously mentioned, it is part of UN policy not to impose one ideology that way. Although I don't think it'll get deleted on ideological ban rules (it doesn't ban a form of government) I don't see it passing, and I don't think it should...compulsory voting is benign enough to let slide in favour of other more important resolutions. You have to pick your battles when it comes to NatSov issues, and this sounds like a big one.

And on a side note, don't submit proposals until you let the guys on the forums get a look at them and offer advice, becuase this one (regardless of the above comments) needs work.

OOC: like the ancient Athenian method of assembling juries, in the absence of sufficient volunteers, h'mm?
