A short guide to posting in the UN forums

A short, unofficial guide to posting in the UN forums

I just got here. What do I do now?

On your first visit to the forums I suggest reading the stickies (the postings at the top of the list marked 'Sticky'). There isn't a standard or a style you should use - although it does help if you try your best with spelling, punctuation, and grammar - but you should read a couple of posts to get the feel of things.

Right. I think I understand this place. How should I post?

You'll need to decide if you want to post with a character or not. Although The UN is not a role playing forum some players post using characters. This is either done because their real life views are different from their NS views, they think it sounds official, they wanted a character to drink in The Stranger's Bar, or they picked a really cool name and didn't know what else to do with it.

A good idea for your first post is to comment on the resolution at vote (if there is one) but don't start your own thread, it will only be locked. The correct place to post comments on the resolution at vote is the sticky at the top of the page.

If - like me - you are terrified by the number of responses in that topic find a discussion about an issue that you feel strongly about.

Remember, if you're going to take a stand on something you need to back that up. You need a basic knowledge of the issue, knowledge of the rules of the UN (but then you did read the stickies, didn't you?) and you need to have some idea about the resolutions that have already passed.

We aren’t going to bite your head off if you make a mistake but that isn't a excuse not to learn the rules.

What if someone looks at my post count and decides not to take me seriously?

If they are really judging you based solely on your post count they are idiots. No exceptions. As long as you are informed, polite and willing to admit defeat anyone who decides your views are not valid will quickly gain a reputation of an idiot.

Some topics have been done before but providing you aren’t claiming something that isn't true it's not a bad thing to revisit them. The membership is always changing and ideas fall in and out of favour.

It's also important to remember that - unless someone has Moderator as their title - no player has more authority over any other. Post counts and memberships to organisations count for nothing. Some players are certainly more respected then others but they aren’t infallible.

So good luck and enjoy yourself. And if you ever feel embarrassed or out of place just look to your RL politicians and see how badly they are messing up.

I like this: nice little guide. Perhaps add a little something on not feeding the troll?

Nice work, Clare.

But really, you should totally listen to people with high postcounts. It means they post a lot, and that's very...uh...meaningful and stuff. ;)

Nice guide. Most of it is common sense for those who use other boards, but I forget sometimes that not everyone is as big of a dork as I :D

High post count elitism and especially trolls are common pretty well wherever you go. Used to those bits.

Aye, but it seems that having a sense of humour is frowned upon...
