I didnt make this proposal but one of my best friends did and i encourage you to vote for it. he might be away for thanksgiving so i made the thread for him. It basically proposes a sporting event that would have all nations competing and give a chance for young people around the world to compete and win. I will telegram him immediately so that he can comment

i think this has been tried before, and hasnt really taken off for some reason.... by the way, could you please post the text of the proposal here. not many people bother to dredge through the list to find individual proposals, and it is kind of a rule that it gets posted here in order to be discussed

thanks Grun

I'm not sure this is illegal. It just seems pointless.
Czechotova

but if it does take off then the athletes of the member nations will have a chance to compete and if they win they would win glory, fame and a career. plus, as Zahrdom mentions it would strenghten relations between nations

Like they did at the Olympics in 1972?

I did. That too was a waste of time. I don't see it as a UN priority to organize sporting events.

oh come on. what happened there was an act of vile terrorism. if it happens once it doesnt mean it will happen again

And the German Olympics in 1936? And the boycotting of Olympics by the USA/USSR?

Politics and sport don't mix. The UN has more important things to be dealing with.

this isnt the real world. due to a lack of war and terrorism in NationStates the worldly games would run smoothly

A lack of war and terrorism? Excuse me, but bahahahaha. Have you not seen International Incidents? Go take a peek, and see how little war there is there.

I mean like combating international terrorism. Just because your proposal is less stupid than another doesn't instantly make it valuable.

it isnt my proposal it is my freinds proposal. this act would be important since it would allow so many athletes fame and fortune. athletes in poor, underdeveloped countries dont stand a chance otherwise

1. Nothing in this proposal makes it any easier for these poor athletes.
2. Why should the UN reward athletic skill (with 'fame and fortune' when many people can't afford to eat)?
3. Do you now what happened to the Senegal Commonwealth Games team? They sent 50 people to Manchester. 48 ran off and became illegal migrant workers in Britain. What checks are in place to stop this?

1. They have the same advandages against other athletes but they would get the chance to perform and get acknowledgement from another country
2. they wouldnt pay the athletes. by setting up this sporting event, they would allow athletes to win. upon winning in the world games the athlete would win fame and a fortune in Nike and Addidas ads and signing in to international teams.
3. the athletes would be travelling with security forces, either from their country or the UN

1. They can do this without UN help.
2. Again, WHY SHOULD THE UN BE INTERESTED? It's nice that Nike want to give all these people money...but why is that an international concern?
3. The proposal doesn't say that.

1. no, they cant. in badly underdeveloped countries there arent many sporting events.
2. If the UN holds the games then the athletes will be seen by Nike. The UN could even have the games sponsored by Athletics companies.
3. could be in a resubmmitted version

first of all, to Grun, i didnt say it was illegal, i just said that it had been tried before and failed numerous times

to Czechotova: it doesnt matter what country you are from, usually atheletes are held in high regard and paid a fair bit, usually through sponsorships, scholarships and/or endorsments. also there is the risk of international conflict interfering with the compertion. in RL, in ancient greece, whenever the olympics were held, any greek wars had a temporary cease-fire. the modern ones, however, dont have that in them (yes, they weren't held during WWI/WWII, but other times they have), and have also been the stage for attacks. in this respect, with the fragile and volitile nature of NS, it could happen at every games.

Getting all nations to make friends would probably do wonders to stop members of those nations killing each other :}

Exactly. And there's nothing like a quick infidel-hunt to strike up bonds of kinship.

News flash, the UN doesn't have security forces and will not be obtaining any.

Of course, if you're concerned about terrorism, you could always support the International Anti-Terror Act...

And if you want peace, you can always support the resolution for UN influence in armed conflict, which will try to reduce armed conflicts by preventing them via a council devoted to doing so.
