Delegates, please support my proposal to ban shark finning, a barbaric way of fishing. With shark populations being reduced, I urge you to help slow that down by banning finning.

Post the text of your proposal here, as well as an explanation of what "shark finning" is.

Shark populations are being reduced are they? We've got thousands upon thousands of sharks around Cobdenia...

The proposal:
Ban Shark Finning

A resolution to increase the quality of the world's environment, at the expense of industry.

Category: Environmental

Industry Affected: All Businesses

Proposed by: Joshan

Description: Each year, at least 20 million tons of sharks are caught, and mercilessly get their fins cut off only to be thrown back in the water, still alive. And because sharks need to force water through their gills to breathe, without their fins, they die. All for a delicacy.

This brutal means of fishing is barbaric and should be banned. For the finning fisheries only use the fins, and then discard the rest of the shark.

This proposal does not mean to ban shark fishing, only shark finning. I propose that from now on, all sharks must be shipped with their fins.

Shark Finning

Shark fins are considered a delicacy in parts of East Asia, and are often eaten in soups. Shark fins are one of the most expensive food products in the world, but with the increase in economic prosperity in Asian countries, the demand for shark fins has skyrocketed.

Shark finning entails catching a shark, cutting off its dorsal fin (that triangular fin on its back that slices through the water in the standard shark-scare scenario), and discarding the rest of the shark.

The blue shark is the species most affected by this practice; more than 90 percent of sharks harvested for their fins come from this species.

Because of the growth in shark-fin demand this practice takes place on a large scale, especially in the Pacific Ocean. In the Hawaiian shark fishery alone, the catch increased from around 2,000 sharks per year to over 60,000 in 1998. The U.S. banned the practice in 2000, and sentiment is growing for a worldwide ban.

Still, even if the sharks are still flourishing around where you live, finning is disgusting.

Wouldn't this be covered already under UNCoESB (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=9692854&postcount=120) or is it more a "ban because its cruel" proposal?

If it is cruelty, then I do see your point about finning, but wouldn't a general proposal that covers all forms of cruelty to animals be better than just singling out one animal for protection.

In my personal opinion the only good shark is a dead shark but that is a response to RL deaths in Australia over the last couple of years.

i suggest you make a resolution that we could only eat/wear/use stuff we can cultivate and make it illegal to eat/wear/use anything else
